Experience with household management research in the field of unpaid work
In: Acta academica karviniensia : vědecký recenzovaný časopis. Karviná : Slezská univerzita v Opavě, Obchodně podnikatelská fakulta v Karviné, 2025. ISSN 1212-415X. Roč. 25, č. 1 (2025), s. 59-71.Unpaid work is a part of everyday life in all households; however, its scope and structure vary significantly across countries. Research on household management and unpaid work has shown that not only the duration of unpaid work matters, but also how it is organized and managed within the household. This article builds on a pilot study (2021) and explores the connection between household management and unpaid work activities, explaining the shift in researching this topic in the main phase of the ongoing study, which aims to achieve deeper results and better sampling techniques compared to the pilot survey. In this article, we use literature review methods and the historical-logical method. Preliminary findings suggest that households make limited use of more advanced management strategies when organizing unpaid work. The article also discusses the advantages and limitations of the survey design, aiming to contribute to the broader academic debate on the methodological and conceptual challenges of researching unpaid work.VEGA 1/0536/24 Manažment slovenských domácností a rozhodovanie o neplatenej práci v postcovidovej ekonomik
Topographically shaded lakes may provide refugia for cold-adapted aquatic fauna threatened by climate change
In: Hydrobiologia : The International Journal of Aquatic Sciences. Dordrecht : Springer, 2025. ISSN 0018-8158. Vol. 852, no. 20 (2025), pp. 5147-5162.Understanding the structure and diversity of high-altitude lake communities and the patterns of their altitudinal changes is important for predicting their response to ongoing climate change. We analysed littoral benthic communities of 18 mountain lakes of glacial origin distributed along a 500-m altitudinal gradient and characterized by differing topographic shading levels: unshaded lakes and shaded lakes with a substantially lower (by 1151 h) mean annual duration of direct solar radiation. We hypothesized that local topographic shading modifies diversity–altitude relationships and affects the pattern of community turnover along the altitudinal gradient. We found a decreasing trend in diversity with increasing altitude and a significant deviation from that pattern in shaded lakes. Investigated lake groups supported distinct communities in lower altitudes. However, their community composition converged towards higher altitudes in communities typical for a greater abundance of cold stenotherms. The proportion of cold-stenothermal species increased with increasing altitude in shaded lakes and was notably greater than that in unshaded lakes along the studied altitudinal gradient. The lower temperatures of shaded lakes and different temperature variabilities of the two groups of lakes likely explain the observed patterns. We hypothesize that topographically shaded lakes may provide refugia for cold-stenothermal communities threatened by ongoing global warming.VEGA 1/0400/21 Dynamika bentických spoločenstiev tatranských plies pod vplyvom klimatickej zmeny a acidifikácie: individuálny a synergický vplyv dvoch globálnych stresorov

Employments of older adults in Slovak regions: analysis of gender and educational differences in the context of the active ageing
In: Applications of mathematics and statistics in economics 2025 : book of abstracts. 1. vyd. Praha : Vysoká škola ekonomická, 2025. ISBN 978-80-245-2555-6. Pp. 17-17.This study analyzes employment patterns among older adults across Slovak regions, focusing on gender and educational disparities within the Active Ageing Index framework. Building upon previous research that identified significant regional variations in active ageing, with Bratislava and Banská Bystrica regions outperforming eastern Slovak regions, this analysis examines the employment domain of the Active Ageing Index using current national data. The study investigates how gender and educational differences affect employment rates among individuals aged 55-74 years across Slovak regions. Results demonstrate a substantial gender gap disadvantaging women, which intensifies in regions with lower overall active ageing levels. Analysis reveals a strong positive correlation between educational attainment and older adults' labor market participation. Regional variations in organizational practices and employment policies create distinct barriers to older adult employment. The research identifies economic implications of low older adult employment rates, including increased social service demands and underutilized human capital. Findings indicate the need for targeted interventions including skills retraining programs, mentoring initiatives, and flexible employment models tailored to regional specificities. This research provides empirical evidence for developing region-specific employment strategies that address the heterogeneous educational backgrounds and persistent gender disparities among the older Slovak population.VEGA 1/0124/24 Slovensko v kontexte dôchodkového indexu a indexu starnutia populácie - perspektíva budúcnost
Does the change in Liver Frailty Index over the first week of hospitalisation predict mortality in patients with acute-on- chronic liver failure? A prospective cohort study from a Slovak liver centre
In: BMJ Open. Londýn : BMJ Group, 2025. ISSN 2044-6055. Vol. 15, no. 5 (2025), pp. 1-10.Objective Hospital admissions for advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) are associated with increased mortality, disability, a decline in quality of life and significant economic costs. Being admitted to the hospital usually indicates a triggering event that disrupted a previously stable condition, leading to decompensation or complications of ACLD. The most acute and severe manifestation of this imbalance is acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), a syndrome representing a critical juncture. Reliable prognostic stratification of patients admitted with ACLF could facilitate the systematic delivery of tailored care, ranging from palliative care to intensive interventions like extracorporeal liver support devices and prioritised liver transplantation. Disease-specific prognostic tools, such as the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, are effective but have limitations, particularly in reflecting a patient’s potential for recovery. The concept of the body’s functional reserve in the context of ACLD/ACLF is gaining attention, with the Liver Frailty Index (LFI) potentially emerging as a recommended diagnostic tool.
Methods Patients were selected from our cirrhosis registry (RH7). The LFI serves as an indicator of the patient’s prognosis. The LFI measurement takes place at two time intervals: on the patient’s admission and after 7 days of hospitalisation.
Results Our RH7 registry included 154 patients (15.1%) who were diagnosed with ACLF. The primary cause of the underlying ACLD was alcohol-associated liver disease in the majority (79.8%) of cases. The mean value of LFI at admission was 4.50 (± 0.94). When patients with liver cirrhosis were categorised into three subgroups based on the LFI on day 7, survival exhibited a statistically significant decrease (p≤0.05) across all three ACLF grades. This decline in survival was observed from the ‘improved LFI’ cohort, through the ‘stable LFI’ group, to the ‘worsened LFI’ group.
Conclusion The impact of day 7 LFI on the survival of patients with ACLF is notable. Nevertheless, it does not markedly enhance the predictive capability of the LFI assessed on admission. Consequently, the initial LFI on day 1 continues to be the most valuable and commonly used instrument for promptly recognising individuals with ACLF.VAIA 09I03-03-V05-00009 Early Stage Granty - UMB v Banskej Bystric
Slovak surnames with somatic components
In: Acta onomastica. Praha : Ústav pro jazyk český Akademie věd ČR, 2025. ISSN 1211-4413. Roč. 66, č. 2 (2025), s. 376-391.The paper focuses on proper names, specifically, Slovak surnames which are motivated by human body parts, i.e. somatisms. From the methodological perspective, two linguistic disciplines are merged, onomastics and cognitive ethnolinguistics, which provide a unifying view of surname formation and its cultural-cognitive background. The genetic-etymological approach is applied, focusing on the primary lexical motivation of surnames. The paper aims to give a closer view on the motivation of surnames from the perspective of cognitive processes and cultural stereotypes. The operating principle of human cognition is anthropocentrism, which is reflected in how human brain conceptualizes and categorizes objects in our world, resulting in the formation of stereotypes. Although the process of name formation occurred a long time ago, the origins of its motivation can be traced back to through the analysis of present-day surnames. The research sample consists of the Slovak database of surnames from 1995, from which surnames containing somatic components were extracted. In the process of analysis, cultural stereotypes related to individual body parts were identified, as well as their presence in the examined surnames.VEGA 1/0211/24 Kultúrno-kognitívny kontext telesnosti v jazyk

Chironomidae (Diptera) from mountain lakes of the Eastern Carpathians, Romania: first records and insight into diversity
In: ZooKeys. - Sofia : Pensoft Publishers, 2025. ISSN 1313-2989. No. 1233 (2025), pp. 107-123.Lakes at high altitudes are extremely sensitive to environmental stressors at both local and global scales, making them important sentinels of the changing world. Chironomidae, the most diverse group of benthic macroinvertebrates inhabiting mountain lakes, respond to various environmental impacts, making them important bioindicators of the lake’s ecological status. This study aimed to provide the first insight into chironomid diversity in high-altitude lakes from two mountain ranges of the Romanian Eastern Carpathians: the Maramures, and the Rodna Mountains. Floating chironomid material was collected by skimming the water surface with a hand net from 16 lakes at elevations ranging from 1378 to 1922 m a.s.l. A total of 50 species/ taxa were collected, including nine new records for Romania. Notes on newly recorded species’ distribution, ecology and taxonomy are provided. In addition, an identification key for Procladius choreus and P. sagittalis based on thoracic horn characteristics is given. With our addition, the total number of chironomid species known from Romania is now 526. The study provides a baseline for future research on chironomid diversity, ecology, and biogeography in high-altitude lakes of the Carpathian Mountains.APVV-20-0358 Čítanie v prírodných archívoch: tisíce rokov dlhá história prostredia a klimatických zmien zaznamenaná v alpínskych jazerách Ukrajinských Karpát

Interconnection of thematic units of basic gymnastics, sports games, and compulsory optional unit in lower secondary education
In: Hry 2025 = Games 2025 : sborník abstraktů z konference s tématikou her v programech tělovýchovných procesů. 1. vyd. Plzeň : Západočeská univerzita v Plzni, 2025. ISBN 978-80-261-1294-5. Experiment prebiehal na vyučovacích hodinách telesnej a športovej výchovy so žiačkami a žiakmi 5. ročníka základnej školy počas 9 týždňov 3 krát týždenne.
In: Acta sociopathologica : the contemporary topics in social pathology and social pedagogy : proceedings of the Institute of Social Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Hradec Králové. 8. 1. vyd. Hradec Králové : Gaudeamus, 2025. ISBN 978-80-7435-942-2. Pp. 154-161.The study aimed to identify and analyse the prevalence of children and young people engaging in online challenges in institutional care settings. The Viral Internet Challenges Scale "VICH-S", aimed at measuring motivation to engage in online challenges (Ortega-Barón et al., 2022) as well as the scale in the EU Kids Online IV in the Slovak Republic (Izrael et al., 2020) were applied to obtain data. The research population consisted of child clients from institutional care aged 10-18 years from the Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions. The results of the research showed an increased level of risk behaviour in child clients attending primary schools. We also found no statistically significant difference between boys and girls engaging in online challenges. The research results indicated that child clients often engaged in online challenges mainly to fit in with a group or collective or to show their courage.KEGA 024UMB-4/2022 Prevencia online rizikového správani
