Verification of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) crown length model
In: Applied Sciences. Basel : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2025. ISSN 2076-3417. Vol. 15, no 6 (2025), pp. 1-15.One of the key modeling procedures is model verification, which ensures its reliability and confidence. In many respects, the length of the crown is an interesting biophysical property. Precise determination of crown length can be one of the components used in estimating the mass of needles or leaf area index (LAI), and consequently the amount of transpiration or the amount of carbon dioxide bound, which is crucial in the context of climate change. The objective of this study was to calculate the length of the crown Pinus sylvestris using an allometric model and to compare these results with the actual ones to establish the degree of discrepancy. The model that was tested was based on three predictor variables, i.e., diameter at breast height, tree height, and stand density index. The verification was carried out using empirical data collected for 300 sample trees on 20 experimental plots located in south-western Poland. All the stands were pine monocultures located in the habitats of fresh or mixed fresh forest aged from 28 to 40 years. The studied stands differed in terms of diameter at breast height, height, and density (0.68–1.81). The comparison between empirical ( ) and calculated ( ) mean crown lengths in the stand using the model was expressed by the correlation coefficient’, which was R = 0.955, with a divergence (±) of 4.57%. The tested model is dedicated to calculating the length of tree crowns at the population level. The model uses a density index, which is a constant value for all trees within the area. Further work is needed to improve the model and allow for precise calculation of the crown length of a single tree, taking into account the space it has at its disposal.VEGA 1/0323/23 Vplyv vybraných faktorov na kvalitatívno-kvantitatívne charakteristiky drevného prachu v pracovnom ovzduší pri opracovaní dreva elektrickým ručným náradím

New Perspectives in Informatics Education – International Proceedings on Teaching Informatics
electronic, conference proceedings, international proceedings, http://didinfo.net/sk/The main objective of the conference is to act on the comprehensive development of the personalities of the student and the teacher in the subject of computer science and multidisciplinary through the subject of computer science. Teaching computer science has been the domain of secondary schools in the past. Slovakia is one of the first countries to introduce the teaching of computer science in primary schools and this step was justified. We have moved on, and we know that for today's technological world it is necessary to lead children towards STEM (Science -Technology - Engineering - Mathematics) education. As an example, with the advent of artificial intelligence tools for children (especially machine learning), we are teaching them how to create learned modules and use them in programming languages. We are trying to use the big language models utilized by GenAI in education. We are teaching how to use GenAI in schools and embed them into school education and how children should work with them.KEGA project number 010TTU-4/2025 Development of pupils' computational and algorithmic thinking through the effective integration of modern technologies into the teaching of computer science and mathematic
Enhancing Old Age: Smart and Welfare Technologies Use Among Older Adults
In: TEM Journal : technology, education, management, informatics. Novi Pazar : UIKTEN - Association for Information Communication Technology Education and Science, 2025. ISSN 2217-8309. Vol. 14, no. 1 (2025), pp. 139-148.Smart and welfare technologies have emerged as key tools for preventing isolation, providing independence, and improving health outcomes among older adults, though their implementation faces significant barriers in countries new to these technologies. This study examines the experiences and perceptions of older adults in Slovakia regarding smart and welfare technologies. A qualitative, exploratory design with reflexive thematic analysis was employed, and seven semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 51 older adults in Slovakia. The results show: (1) Older adults are constructive about their experiences and have a favourable perception of smart and welfare technologies concerning their health and personal care, social life, and generally. (2) They were insecure when their experiences were linked to language settings, cyber threats, and costs. (3) Practical considerations have both positive and negative aspects - physical and health limitations and a lack of digital skills hinder some individuals; for others, using the technology can empower the users with better digital literacy skills. The findings indicate that smart and welfare technologies can enhance older adults' independence in Slovakia, but adoption is limited by costs, expertise gaps, and privacy concerns, highlighting the need for targeted policies and support.EEA Grants BIN SGS02_2021_002 Univerzita podporujúca inteligentné aktívne starnuti
Mapping of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra L.) in the Hron River basin (Slovakia)
In: Zoologické dny Brno 2025 : sborník abstraktů z konference. 1. vyd. Brno : Ústav biologie obratlovců AV, 2025. ISBN 978-80-87189-47-4. S. 229-229.Hron is the second longest river in Slovakia. It springs under Kráľová hoľa at an altitude of 934 m and flows into the Danube not far from the place where the Danube leaves the territory of Slovakia. Mapping the river otter in a square grid is, despite the reservations, a method used to determine the spread of this species over a relatively large area and its changes. The distribution of the otter in the Hron river basin was investigated during five field mappings (winter 1995/1996, summer and autumn 2010, winter 2011/2012, winter 2021/2022, winter 2022/2023) using a modified IUCN/OSG standard method. It was about the evidence of the presence of a species, or its residence signs on selected 600 m sections of streams in the network of 48 squares of the Databank of the Fauna of Slovakia (approx. 10 × 12 km) and their 150 quadrants (approx. 2.5 × 3 km). During the first mapping in the winter of 1995/1996, the lowest number of positive squares (35; t. j. 72,9 %) and quadrants (71; 47,3 %) was recorded. Signs of otter habitat were mainly absent in the lower reaches of the Hron, but they were found near its mouth into the Danube, or on some tributaries of the lower Hron (e.g. Paríž). During further mapping, there was an increase in both positive squares and quadrants in the entire river basin. The increase was most pronounced in the middle and lower part of the basin. The highest number of positive squares (46; 95,8 %) and quadrants (125; 83,3 %) was recorded in the winter of 2021/2022.VEGA 1/0836/08 Stanovištné nároky vydry riečnej (Lutra lutra L.) na vodných tokoch

Sustainable Tourism Development in the Ždiar Highland Municipality in the Transition Zone of the Tatra Biosphere Reserve (Slovakia)
In: Journal of Environmental & Earth Sciences. Midview City : Bilingual Publishing Group, 2025. ISSN 2661-3190. Vol. 7, no. 5 (2025), pp. 381-400.The Goral municipality of Ždiar (a Conservation Reserve of Folk Architecture since 1977) is one of the most attractive areas in Slovakia under the growing influence of the developing tourism. Since 1949 it has been part of the protection zone of the Tatra National Park and since 1993 it has been part of the transition zone of the Tatra Biosphere Reserve. In recent years, tourism has taken a major role in the transition zone of this biosphere reserve. In the presented contribution, we therefore evaluate the impact of developing tourism in the cadastral area of the municipality of Ždiar between 1950 and 2022.. We rely primarily on available statistical data from various sources and on the analysis of the historical and contemporary landscape structure. During this period, almost 50% of the area has changed land cover. The activities that have significantly changed the landscape include afforestation, deforestation, agrointensification, deurbanisation (naturalisation), urbanisation (anthropisation): tourism development and construction of a water reservoir. Tourism has become the main driver of the economy here and opens up opportunities especially for local inhabitants. However, the lack of completed tourism infrastructure is a drawback. We recommend the establishment of the Coordinating Council of the Tatra Biosphere Reserve and permanent employees at the National Park Administration.APVV-20-0108 Implementácia Agendy 2030 prostredníctvom biosférických rezervácií

Metaphor and expressivity as building principles in toponymy
In: Acta onomastica. Praha : Ústav pro jazyk český Akademie věd ČR, 2025. ISSN 1211-4413. Roč. 66, č. 2 (2025), s. 411-421.From the perspective of cognitive linguistics and ethnolinguistics, metaphor presents a way of structuring our thinking and perception of the world. Among the most significant metaphors are orientational and ontological metaphors, which are also significantly used in toponomastics. Orientational metaphors include spatial relationships that occur in toponymy mainly with an important motivational feature of the toponym – the localization of the object. From the point of view of cognitive linguistics, it is the subject’s perception of space from their perspective and the perception of surrounding toponymic objects which create reference points for localization. The ontological metaphor is used in naming toponymic objects based on the objectʼs shape, distance, (poor) quality of the soil and in other subdisciplines of toponymy – in speleonymy, orohodonymy and hydronymy.VEGA 1/0211/24 Kultúrno-kognitívny kontext telesnosti v jazyk
Unpaid work in dual-earner households: gendered patterns and the challenges of everyday life
In: Mladá veda = Young science. Prešov : Universum, 2025. ISSN 1339-3189. Roč. 13, č. 2 (2025), s. 235-254.This article examines selected theoretical and methodological foundations for researching household management, with a particular focus on unpaid work within dual-income couples. While this issue is a daily and important part of most households in Slovakia, it has so far lacked sufficient academic and scientific attention. The article provides an overview of key theoretical approaches to studying this topic, primarily considering international empirical research. It highlights how gender roles and negotiation processes shape the division of unpaid work in households. One of the article goals is to integrate management perspectives into the research of unpaid work. It emphasizes the need to understand households not just as places of consumption, but also as units of organization and coordination. The article also suggests directions for future research, drawing on international insights and the current capabilities of the research team at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics, UMB in Banská Bystrica. The findings indicate potential implications for public policy, gender equality initiatives, and the well-being of individuals in dual-income households.VEGA 1/0536/24 Manažment slovenských domácností a rozhodovanie o neplatenej práci v postcovidovej ekonomik
Bridging the gap in skills, competencies, and knowledge: Identifying businesses' perception of Slovak and Czech tourism graduates
In: European Journal of Tourism Research. Varna : Varna University of Management, 2025. ISSN 1994-7658. Vol. 40 (2025), pp. [1-14].Recognising the needs of the tourism business in terms of graduate students' skills, competencies, and knowledge is a prerequisite for high employability. This study examines these needs and identifies the gap in soft, hard, and sustainability skills of tourism graduates. This empirical research addresses the following research question: What skills, knowledge, and competencies should be considered essential by higher education institutions? This subject is yet to be thoroughly explored in the Central European context. This study delves into the business perspective and analyses their expectations of tourism graduates. To offer meaningful insights, this study employs an innovative methodology, namely an importance-performance analysis, to gain insights into these skills gaps and businesses’ expected hard and soft competencies. The implications of these results extend beyond the immediate region as they may apply to the broader European Union by equipping graduates with the skills to thrive in its open market.Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union 2021-1-SK01-KA220-HED-000023160 Smart Business Skills of Tourism University Students Applicable on International Labour Market

Secondary school dropout prevention through service-learning: A pilot study
In: International journal of educational research. Londýn : Elsevier Science Ltd., 2025. ISSN 0883-0355. No. 133 (2025), pp. 1-11.This study investigates the impact of a service-learning program on secondary school dropout prevention in four European countries. The methodological design was a cluster randomized trial. The intervention involved a sample of secondary school students (n = 204), implementing an ad hoc intervention model. Regression results in Model 7 with all predictors and controls show a significant effect in the variable experimental group, with all predictors and controls explaining 27.9 % of the variance. Suggestive positive results are present for other variables like country (Austria) and Slovakia (Model 2), global trait emotional intelligence (Model 3), civic responsibility, civic efficacy (Model 4), civic skills (Model 5), and learning mindset (Model 6). Based on these promising results, some recommendations are made to improve the future impact of this type of comprehensive service-learning program.Erasmus+ 621448-EPP-1-2020-1-BE-EPPKA3-IPI-SOC-IN Service Learning Upscaling Social Inclusion for Kids (SLUSIK

In: NOVÁ FILOLOGICKÁ REVUE : časopis o súčasnej lingvistike, literárnej vede, translatológii a kulturológii. Banská Bystrica : Univerzita Mateja Bela, 2025. ISSN 1338-0583. Roč. 17, č. 1 (2025), s. 94-105.This study investigates the concept of easy-to-understand language and its role in foreign language acquisition. The aim is to analyze how simplified linguistic structures promote comprehension and facilitate the learning process, especially in didactic contexts. The research follows an interdisciplinary approach combining principles of applied linguistics and didactics. Using the fairy tale The Twelve Months as an example, the influence of intralingual translation on learners’ language comprehension and cognitive processing is examined. The study involved working with texts and audio recordings. It assesses learners’ text comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and how engagement with the instructional material is fostered. Furthermore, this investigation contributes to the current debate on linguistic accessibility in education and provides practical implications for foreign language didactics, particularly in early language acquisition
