Climate change as a socio-economic challenge for the tourism sector: an econometric analysis of countries with the highest economic losses

Vol. 31, no. 5 (2025), pp. 1644-1664.The issue of climate change, and in particular the economic losses caused by natural disasters, is a significant problem for the tourism sector and its development. The research conducted aims to address the following research question: Does climate change, quantified by the economic losses attributed to extreme weather events, influence the development of the tourism sector, as measured by tourism’s contribution to GDP? Furthermore, the study explores the role of insurance as a financial instrument for mitigating the effects of climate change on tourism. An important part of the research is an in-depth regional analysis of climate change losses. It was carried out both on a continental level and for the countries studied. Statistical and econometric techniques were employed to investigate the research question. The analysis focused on a selection of countries identified by the Swiss Re Institute as having experienced the highest economic losses due to climate change. Thirteen countries were surveyed, ensuring representation for each continent. The research period spans the years 2014–2023, and the data analysis was conducted using Statistica 13 and Gretl software. The findings indicate that economic losses resulting from natural disasters show an increasing trend, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of national GDP. These losses represent a significant constraint on economic growth, particularly limiting the development of tourism. Furthermore, the survey shows that the negative effects of climate change are more challenging for less economically developed countries. These countries are in addition to being more exposed to climate-related damages because of their natural conditions, but also struggle with underdeveloped insurance sectors. Reduced access to insurance compounds the disruptive impact of climate change on tourism. An analysis of the relationship between the weather damage load on a country’s economy and the insurance gap identifies three countries – the USA and China – as being especially at risk. Investigating the impact of the effects of natural disasters on the development of the tourism sector in countries with the greatest economic losses from climate change fills a research gap in this area and contributes to the development of knowledge on the effects of climate change on the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism. The research should be considered original in its subject coverage. No studies of this scope have been found in the literature. Investigating the impact of insurance on climate change mitigation for the tourism sector should also be considered innovative. Mapping landslide susceptibility and risk assessment on fragile ecosystem of Himalayan River basins

Vol. 37, no. 1 (2025), pp. 1-22.Landslides pose a significant threat in the Himalayan region due to complex geology, steep terrain, and diverse climatic conditions. This study addresses the need for a multi-dimensional approach by integrating Machine Learning with GIS to map landslide susceptibility across Himalayan River basins. Conditioning variables including topographical, climatological, hydrological, and phenological factors, and surface conditions were analysed using SVM to predict landslide susceptibility. For validation, SHAP, ROC curves, and AUC were used. The model attained 87% accuracy. Risk assessment was performed by intersecting land use/land cover (LULC) data with susceptibility zones to quantify agricultural and Urban and Built-up land exposed to landslides, alongside zonal statistics to estimate population risks. The results indicate that 371.5 thousand hectares are at very high risk of landslides, and 209.2 thousand hectares are at high risk, with the Jhelum River Basin emerging as the most vulnerable in terms of population, agricultural land, and built-up areas. This study demonstrates the dominance of hydrological and vegetation-related variables, such as runoff and forest fires, in driving landslide susceptibility, as revealed by SHAP analysis. Integrating susceptibility models with risk assessment, the study provides insights for regional planning, disaster management, and policy-making, stressing targeted mitigation for vulnerable basins.King Saud University RSP2024R249

Comparative analysis of the terms understatement and meiosis in academic literature

Roč. 17, č. 1 (2025), s. 49-61.The paper offers a comparative analysis of the terms understatement and meiosis, highlighting their conceptual similarities and unique treatment in academic literature. Both involve a decrease in propositional meaning; however, their interpretation differs among various theoretical frameworks. Understatement is commonly regarded as a pragmatic phenomenon reliant on context, while meiosis is typically characterised as a more emphatic and rhetorically significant form of minimisation. By incorporating various definitions, cultural viewpoints, and current scholarly analyses, the article uncovers the ambiguous terminology surrounding these concepts. Changes in body composition of triathletes during a period of strength training

Roč. 13, č. 3 (2025), s. 46-58.The triathlete's effort of being faster, stronger and mostly more enduring requires to think about through their entire preparation in detail. To prepare their bodies for maximum performance, it is necessary to achieve certain changes in terms of body composition. Body composition diagnostics serve as feedback for the triathlete and the coach on their muscle mass and body fat percentage, so it is appropriate to include it in the training process. Based on this knowledge, this research investigates how strength-conditioning training affects changes in body composition in triathletes. The research included 8 high-performance triathletes from TRIAN ŠK UMB Banská Bystrica triathlon club whose age was 17.26 ± 0.59 years with a body height of 175.8 ± 7.4 cm and a body weight of 63.2 ± 5.8 kg. Tanita MC-780MA device was used to obtain the necessary data of the triathletes. This multi-frequency body composition analyser is at the level of 3 frequencies which ensures high accuracy on 100 g. These data were stored on the SD memory card and then, after pairing using a Bluetooth adapter, it was transferred to a computer with Windows 10 OS. Input and output measurements took place in the morning under the same conditions. The training program ran for 8 weeks in the preparatory period from 16. 01. 2024 to 07. 03. 2024 and was implemented twice a week. When comparing the input and output data, the experimental group recorded an average increase in muscle mass of 1.1 ± 1.36 kg and a decrease in body fat % of -0.98 ± 0.43%, while the control group recorded an average increase in muscle mass of 0.43 ± 0.47 kg and a decrease in body fat % of -0.63 ± 0.98%. The results suggest that a strength-endurance training program will have a greater effect on changing body composition in triathletes than a uniform training method. Given the smaller number of subjects, a broader investigation of the issue is recommended
Hráme sa s písmenami : Vzdelávacie aktivity na rozvoj kognitívnych a psychomotorických schopností detí predškolského veku v príprave na čítanie a písanie
Vzdelávacie aktivity môžu slúžiť ako učebný text vo vysokoškolskej príprave budúcich učiteľov a učiteliek materských škôl aj v profesijnom rozvoji pedagogických zamestnancov (ďalej učiteľov). Ide o prvú časť metodického materiálu vytvoreného v projekte KEGA č. 001UMB-4/2025 Hry s písmenami v predprimárnom vzdelávaní. Tvorba metodického materiálu s integráciou vzdelávacích oblastí. Učebný text je koncipovaný formou návrhov 23 vzdelávacích aktivít na písmená slovenskej abecedy bez diakritiky. Zamerané sú na rozvoj kognitívnych a psychomotorických schopností detí predškolského veku v príprave na čítanie a písanie. Učitelia ich môžu realizovať v triede so spolužiakmi na vysokej škole aj s deťmi v materskej škole. Dôležité je, aby ich prispôsobili výchovno- vzdelávacími potrebám detí a podmienkam prostredia, v ktorom ich realizujú. Vzdelávacími aktivitami môžu integrovane dosahovať viaceré štandardy platného štátneho kurikula, lebo obsahujú jazykové, komunikačné, matematické, umelecké, prírodovedné, spoločenskovedné, pracovné a pohybové výchovno-vzdelávacie činnosti. Každá vzdelávacia aktivita je rozčlenená na 9 oblastí rozvoja kognitívnych a psychomotorických schopností detí predškolského veku, ktoré tvoria predpoklady pre úspešný nácvik čítania a písania v 1. ročníku základnej školy: 1. verbálna komunikácia, 2. zrakové vnímanie, 3. sluchové vnímanie, 4. pohybové vnímanie, 5. hmatové vnímanie, 6. hovorená reč, 7. písaná reč, 8. grafomotorika, 9. verbálna komunikácia.KEGA 001UMB-4/2025 Hry s písmenami v predprimárnom vzdelávaní. Teachers’ preferences of teaching gymnastics in primary education: differences in length of teachers’ career levels

Vol. 8, no. 3 (2025), pp. 91-102.Teachers (educators) maintain the misunderstanding that teaching gymnastics in primary education is full of challenges (risks, complications). Regardless of whether you are a beginner and/or an experienced teacher in primary education, leading students (pupils) to mastering gymnastics may be challenging. Because many gaps remain in literature, in terms of Slovak scale (to the best of the authors' knowledge), the present study was aimed at analyzing and comparing teachers' preferences of teaching gymnastics in primary education. A 3-question survey (teachers' preferences of teaching gymnastics) was carried out during 18 weeks (June 1 – September 30, 2023), aiming at 1246 (100%) teachers in primary education: (i) Beginning teachers (490, 39.32%); (ii) Experienced teachers (756, 60.68%). Descriptive (percentage – %, arithmetic mean – x)̄ and inferential (chi-square test – χ2) statistics was used to evaluate the data (Ibm Spss Modeler). 30.50% (380) of teachers in primary education believe that teaching gymnastics (dance) is demanding, compared to outdoor adventure (108, 8.60%) (χ2(4) = 3.08 E-05; p = 26.04). 786 (62.34%) of teachers in primary education use traditional gymnastics equipment, compared to 1.92% (24) who do not teach gymnastics (at all) (χ2(3) = 19.54; p = 0.0002). 42.78% (532) of teachers in primary education believe that material equipment (available) in teaching gymnastics in sufficient, compared to 20.14% (250) who take the opposite view (insufficient) (χ2(3) = 0.64; p= 1.68). Despite the challenges, incorporating gymnastics in primary education may offer advantages, in particular, developing coordination and balance, fostering teamwork and cooperation. Adequate preparation and access to resources may help teachers navigate the challenges of teaching gymnastics and provide learning experiences

Roč. 31, č. 1 (2025), s. 12-20.Otázka náhrady za stratu času patrí pravdepodobne medzi bežné záležitosti každého advokáta pri výkone advokátskeho povolania. Je už tradične ustálené, že na túto náhradu má advokát nárok vzhľadom na stratu príležitostí na prácu na právnych kauzách alebo na získavanie nových klientov v dôsledku času stráveného cestovaním, ktoré samo osebe nie je považované za priamu prácu na právnom prípade s nárokom na odmenu za ňu. Autor článku sa zaoberá spôsobmi určovania výšky tejto náhrady, pričom poukazuje na to, že v praxi čoraz častejšie dochádza k spájaniu času stráveného cestou do miesta úkonu právnej služby s časom stráveným cestou z tohto miesta, čo má v mnohých prípadoch za následok priznanie náhrady za stratu času v nižšom rozsahu, ako pri vyčíslení tejto náhrady samostatne za obe cesty. Autor článku predkladá analýzu existujúcej právnej úpravy a poskytuje podrobné argumenty pre posúdenie správnosti oboch vyššie uvedených spôsobov určovania výšky náhrady za stratu času advokáta
Commentaries on selected fragments by Euclid of Megara

Roč. 80, č. 3 (2025), s. 424-440.Selected fragments of Euclid of Megara concentrate on the testimonies that modern historians consider important for our efforts to reconstruct the early phase of the so-called Megarian Socratic school. Three of the fragments in this selection come from the doxographer Diogenes Laertius, who takes them from earlier Peripatetic and Alexandrian sources (fragments SSR II A 30, SSR II A 32, and SSR II A 34, according to Giannantoni’s edition); the fourth fragment comes from Cicero (SSR II A 31). The main method in the interpretation of the fragments is a hermeneutical reading of the text and the context, based on linguistic analysis and comparison of the various theses attributed to Euclid with the corpus of Socratic literature as well as with Hellenistic philosophy. The purpose of this paper is not to provide an interpretation of the fragments, but to review the basic strategies of modern historians in interpreting these testimonies, so that the reader can get a comprehensive picture of how the fragments have been interpreted in the last two centuries.VEGA 1/0031/23 Miesto megarikov v sokratovskom hnut
