    No full text
Acet, Yakup/0000-0002-6589-0329Clinical relevance The tear break-up time (BUT) test is important in diagnosing and monitoring tear film stability, and understanding potential changes in tear film dynamics during repeated measurements could improve the accuracy and reliability of the test in clinical practice. Background The study aimed to examine the changes in BUT value caused by subsequent measurements made in BUT test. Methods A total of 120 female participants were divided into groups (30 individuals each). Participants were divided into four groups based on the interval between two non-invasive tear break-up time (NI-BUT) tests: Group 1 (1-minute interval), Group 5 (5-minute interval), Group 10 (10-minute interval), and Group 15 (15-minute interval). The first NI-BUT test was called Initial NI-BUT (NI-BUT(I)), and the second test was called Subsequent NI-BUT (NI-BUT(S)). The first BUTvalue (BUT1st), the second BUT value (BUT2nd), the third BUT value (BUT3rd), the fourth BUT value (BUT4th), the fifth BUT value (BUT5th), and the average value of the first three BUTs (BUTA3) were compared between the NI-BUT(1) and NI-BUT(S) tests. Results Participant ages ranged from 18 to 36 years, with a mean of 25.1 +/- 3.2 years. The mean values of BUT1st, BUT2(nd), BUT3(rd), BUT4(th), BUT5(th), and BUTA3 in the NI-BUT(I) test were statistically significantly shorter than those in the NI-BUT(S) test for all groups (p < 0.05). The changes in the parameters were statistically significantly greater in Group 1 compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions Subsequent measurements cause increased BUT values. The longer the interval between two measurements, the smaller the differences between the subsequent measurements. When performing the BUT test, a single measurement should be preferred if possible. If the clinician finds the results of a single measurement unsatisfactory and wishes to consider the average of multiple measurements, the interval between tests should be longer than 15 minutes

    No full text
This study aimed to propose a sensitive analytical method to determine trace levels of manganese by combining magnetic nanoparticle (MNP)-assisted solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with slotted quartz tube flame atomic absorption spectrometry (SQT-FAAS). MNP was used as an absorbent in the extraction processes, univariately optimizing parameters such as pH, buffer volume, MNP amount, eluent concentration and volume, mixing type and duration, and interaction time to improve extraction efficiency. The limits of detection and quantification values for the developed MNP-SPME-SQT-FAAS method were identified as 108 and 359 mu g/dm(3), respectively. The coefficient of determination, percentage relative standard deviation, and percentage recovery values were also calculated as 0.9995, 3.84, and 96.73, respectively. As a result, the developed MNP-SPME-SQT-FAAS method improved the detection power of the traditional FAAS method by 16.91-fold. This method is the first to accurately and sensitively determine trace manganese content in nut samples. The developed MNP-SPME-SQT-FAAS method was confirmed that have a high sensitivity to determine the trace amounts of manganese and displayed potential applicability for real samples

    No full text
Rafiq syndrome is a congenital disorder of glycosylation type II that develops due to mutations in the Mannosidase Alpha Class 1B Member 1 (MAN1B1) gene encoding alpha 1,2-mannosidase. In the literature, 45 patients have been reported to date. This study presents a patient with some phenotypic traits that differ from previously reported patients with Rafiq syndrome.Since the patient was not diagnosed despite detailed examinations, whole exome sequencing was performed. The patientss' homozygous c.1000 C>T (p.Arg334Cys) pathogenic variant was detected in the MAN1B1 gene (NM_016219.5), which was consistent with Rafiq syndrome. Our patient's clinical findings were mainly similar to those of previously reported patients. However, our patient had feeding difficulty that started to improve after the fifth month and persistent hyperekplexia . Feeding difficulty and hyperekplexia concomitant to MAN1B1 gene mutation are reported for the first time. More extensive case series are needed to understand whether these findings are part of the syndrome or incidental comorbid conditions

Aslan Ceylan, Jiyan/0000-0003-1649-3586;The widespread use of social media has become an important factor influencing eating behaviors, particularly among university students who are heavily exposed to digital content. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between social media addiction and hedonic hunger and to explore the moderating roles of gender and emotional eating. This cross-sectional study was conducted online during the 2023-2024 academic years and included 930 university students from T & uuml;rkiye. Data were collected using the Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult Form (SMAS-AF) and the Power of Food Scale (PFS). Emotional eating was assessed by asking participants about their overall mood and whether their emotional state influenced their eating behavior, including changes in food intake (increased, decreased, or no change). Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS and the PROCESS Macro, with significance set at p < 0.05. Findings revealed a significant positive relationship between SMAS-AF and PFS scores (B = 0.61, p < 0.01). Emotional eating significantly moderated this relationship (B = - 0.24, p < 0.01), while gender did not. Students who perceived their nutritional knowledge as inadequate, reported unbalanced eating habits, or viewed themselves as overweight or obese consistently exhibited higher scores on both the scales (p < 0.05). These results underscore the need for interventions that address emotional regulation, nutrition literacy, and media awareness to mitigate the impact of social media on eating behaviors in young adults

The importance of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) as a crop with valuable nutritional content is expected to increase with the growing global population; therefore, this research was conducted in 2019-2020 and 20202021 to evaluate the effects of organic (vermicompost, chicken manure, and farm manure) and inorganic (S and diammonium phosphate [DAP]) fertilizers on the yield and nutrient content of the lentil '& Ccedil;a & gbreve;& imath;l'. The study used no fertilizer control, chemical fertilizer (140 kg ha-1 DAP 18-46), sulfate fertilizer (30 kg S ha-1), and organic fertilizers such as chicken manure (2 t ha-1), farm manure (20 t ha-1), and vermicompost (2 t ha-1). The experiment was designed as a randomized block with three replicates. According to results, S fertilizer was found to significantly improve plant height, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, protein ratio, S and Fe content. It was predicted that farmyard manure significantly improves the grain nutrient properties (P, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, and Zn) of lentil compared to other treatments. The S fertilizer increased plant height (55.1 cm), thousand-grain weight (33.6 g), grain yield (2065 kg ha-1), and protein ratio (33.1%); additionally, farmyard manure application was found to enhance the nutrient content of lentil grains, including P (4056.7 mg kg-1), Cu (16.15 mg kg-1), K (8926.3 mg kg-1), Mg (985.1 mg kg-1), Mn (15.3 mg kg-1), and Zn (35.0 mg kg-1). It is recommended to use a combination of S fertilizer and organic fertilizers such as farmyard manure to enhance environmental sustainability, maintain soil fertility, and improve yield and nutrient content in lentil production

In cultures where traditional religious understanding is intense, visits to tombs hold an important place. Tombs, within the understanding of Islam, are on the one hand an area that is not accepted and is the focus of criticism, while on the other hand they are regarded as sacred spaces according to traditional religious understanding. In Anatolia, people believe in the exalted status and miraculous events of the individuals buried in the tombs or considering them closer to God, attribute sanctity to these places and see them as a means of holiness. In the historical process, tombs have acquired a functional quality as significant religious sites visited by people for the purpose of praying, seeking help and being close to or reaching the sacred. This study analyzes the meanings that visitors attribute to the tombs, the symbolic significance of the rituals performed, the interaction of the tombs with popular culture, and how these experiences are shaped in terms of gender, using the example of the 27 Sahaba Tombs located within the Hz. Süleyman Mosque Complex in Diyarbakır. In the study, data obtained through field observations and participant interviews were evaluated using qualitative research methods. Within the study, the concept of religious anthropology is first explained, followed by an evaluation of tomb culture, the significance of rituals, and the perception of sacred space within this framework. Additionally, religious practices in the context of popular culture are briefly addressed. According to the findings, rituals such as praying, making wishes, and fulfilling vows at the tomb serve not only to meet religious and spiritual needs but also to strengthen social solidarity and a sense of belonging. Tomb visits, provide individuals with psychological relief, consolation, and a source of spiritual strength. Simultaneously, with the transformation of the tomb into a more popular space, it has acquired social and cultural functions such as serving as a picnic area and a site for touristic visits. From a gender perspective, women were observed to engage more in healing- and family-centered practices, while men predominantly assumed protective and authoritative roles. Consequently, the Hz. Süleyman Tomb is interpreted as a multi-layered space where the sacred and the ordinary, as well as public and private practices, intersect. This study, demonstrates that sacred spaces should be analyzed not only in the context of religious rituals but also through the lenses of gender dynamics, interactions with popular culture, and spatial transformations

    No full text
Background: Ischemic heart disease is frequently diagnosed with myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS). The leuko-glycemic index (LGI) has also been shown to estimate myocardial ischemia (MI). The purpose of this research was to evaluate the diagnostic utility of LGI in determining MI by contrasting it with MPS. Methods: A retrospective study was performed involving patients who presented with chest pain and were referred for MPS by cardiology outpatient clinics. The study included 143 patients after applying exclusion criteria and measuring LGI. According to MPS, patients were classified into two as ischemic and non-ischemic groups. Results: The study consisted of 99 (69.2%) men and 44 women (30.8%) with a mean age of 60.33±13.83 years. Individuals were split into two categories: ischemic (n=56) and non-ischemic (n=87). No statistically significant difference exists between the groups regarding dyslipidemia (P=0.11), smoking (P=0.17), and gender (P=0.20). There were no substantial differences across the groups including laboratory parameters (P>0.05). LGI values were substantially higher in the ischemic group (P<0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) of the LGI to predict ischemic patients in the MPS was 0.752 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.67 to 0.88; P<0.001]. The optimal cut-off value of LGI was 1,873 mg/dL·mm3 with 72% sensitivity and 70% specificity. Conclusions: LGI was an independent predictor of MI in patients with chest pain. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
