The purpose of this study was to compare hand grip strength and reaction times in male motorcycle racers grouped according to different ages and the classes of motorcycle used and determine the relation between these characteristics. Sixty-five healthy male motorcycle racers were divided into four groups according to their age and the power of the motorcycles' engine: (Group-1 [G1] = 600CC/23-34 years; Group-2 [G2] = 600-CC/35-48 years; Group-3 [G3] = 1000-CC/23-34 years; Group-4 [G4] = 1000-CC/35-48 years). Then, Nelson's reaction time and maximal hand grip strength were measured for both hands. There were no significant differences between the groups' grip strength (p>0.05). It was found that G1's right-and left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G2, and G1's left-hand reaction time was faster than that of G3 (p<0.05). The right-hand visual reaction time was found to have a negative weak correlation with the left-hand absolute grip strength (r=-0.247, p=0.047), and there was a weak positive correlation between the left-hand visual reaction time and height (r=0.315, p=0.011). G1's right-hand visual reaction time was better than that of G2 (p < 0.001), and G1's visual left-hand reaction time was better than those of G2 (p < 0.034) and G3 (p < 0.011). Although the absolute and relative hand grip strength values did not differ according to the ages and the engine power of the motorcycle used, it was found that the simple reaction time increased with increasing age.Turkish Motorcycle FederationThe authors kindly thank the motorcycle racers who participated in this study, as well as the Turkish Motorcycle Federation that supported this project.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Background Non-compliance with immunosuppressive drugs has been reported as the most significant cause of graft loss. Since non-compliance with immunosuppressive drugs is preventable, certain approaches based on the risk factors and causes of non-compliance can help eliminate this problem. Aims The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of patient education and interviews in improving medication adherence of renal-transplant recipients. Materials and methods This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial. Using the G*Power program, the sample size was calculated as 60 subjects, with 30 in both the intervention group and control group. Data collection tools included a patient information form, a pretest-posttest, a drug monitoring form for kidney transplant patients, the Immunosuppressive Therapy Adherence Scale, measurement of tacrolimus blood levels, and a training booklet. Results The mean knowledge score in the intervention group was 12.17 +/- 3.39 at baseline, and it increased to 20.73 +/- 1.57 after the intervention. The mean scores on the Immunosuppressant Therapy Adherence Scale were 11.67 +/- 0.55 and 10.70 +/- 0.99 in the intervention group and control group, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the pre- test and post-test means on the Immunosuppressant Therapy Adherence Scale in the intervention group. The mean Immunosuppressant Therapy Adherence Scale score was higher in the intervention group. In the measurement of tacrolimus blood levels, medication adherence was found the be higher in the intervention group. The difference between the groups was statistically significant. There was a positive correlation between the tacrolimus blood levels and the Immunosuppressant Therapy Adherence Scale scores in both groups. Conclusions To conclude, our results have demonstrated that patient education and interviews improve immunosuppressant medication adherence in renal transplant recipients. Using direct or indirect methods proved similar outcomes, suggesting that both evaluation methods are safe.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Methods: This was an experimental study conducted on 60 healthy women who were admitted to the Noi Pilates in Istanbul Turkey, which was a private Pilates studio. The study was carried out on 60 grown-up, healthy women between 18 and 65 years of age who fasted in Ramadan 2019, some of whom did Pilates and some who did not. The women involved in the study had been doing Pilates for 6 months prior to Ramadan and did Pilates at least 3 times a week during Ramadan. Results: Significant increases were observed in body mass index (BMI), triceps skin-fold thickness (SFT), muscle mass and fat percentage in the fasting and non-pilates group (p<0.05). Our study found the change in the percentage of triceps SFT and fat in women who did Pilates to be more than those who did not. BMI, muscle mass, waist circumference and hip circumference of women who did Pilates and who did not do Pilates during Ramadan did not differ compared to the first measurements, and neither of the two methods dominated in terms of these variables. Conclusion: While a long period of fasting in Ramadan leads people to inactivity, personalized exercise and nutrition programs planned by experts may result in weight loss, especially for obese and slightly overweight people

Dusgun, Elif Sena/0000-0003-0419-1150; KURAN ASLAN, GOKSEN/0000-0002-0169-0707BACKGROUND: An increase in respiratory work load and resistance to respiration cause a decrease in respiratory muscle endurance (RME) in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS). We aimed to evaluate and compare RME in subjects with OHS and a control group using an incremental load test and compare the RME of subjects with OHS in whom noninvasive ventilation (NIV) was and was not used. METHODS: Forty subjects with OHS (divided according to body mass index [BMI] as group I: 30-40 kg/m(2); and group II: 6 40 kg/m(2)) and 20 subjects with obesity (control group: 30-40 kg/m(2)) were included in the study. RME was evaluated using the incremental load test, and respiratory muscle strength (RMS) was evaluated using mouth pressure measurements. The 6-min walk test, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), EQ-5D Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D), and the Obesity and Weight-Loss Quality of Life Instrument (OWLQOL) were performed. RESULTS: RME and RMS (%) in group I were lower than the control group (P=.001, P=.005, and P=.001, respectively). No significant difference was found between the 3 groups in terms of 6-min walk distance (6MWD) percentage predicted values (P=.98). RME in the NIV user group was higher than the non-user group (P 5.006). ESS, total PSQI, and FSS scores in the control group were less than group I (P=.01, P=.009, and P=.005, respectively) and group II (P 5.01, P <.001, and P <.001, respectively). The EQ-5D scores of the control group were higher than group II only (P=.005 and P=.005, respectively). There were no differences in OWLQOL between the groups (P=.053). CONCLUSIONS: RME was low in subjects with OHS but higher in those who used NIV. The incremental load test could be performed easily and safely in a clinic setting.Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Research Foundation [29713]This study was supported by Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Research Foundation, project number 29713.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

James Joyce’un Ulysses Romanında Biçim: Parçalanma ve Kapanış

    Get PDF

OZTURK, Necla/0000-0002-6546-2914; CAN, FILIZ/0000-0003-0641-9956; Kilicoglu, Onder Ismet/0000-0003-0023-7094; Nadir Kuchimov, Shavkat Sevket/0000-0003-1481-8447Objective: Early activation of lateral hamstrings (LH) relative to medial hamstrings (MH) has been thought to be the cause of abnormal knee abduction and external rotation of the tibia, which affects the orientation of patellar tendon and increases lateral patellofemoral compression. Therefore, early activation of LH relative to MH is considered to have a role in the patellofemoral pain (PFP). The aim of this study was to investigate the time difference between MH and LH onsets in patients with PFP during gait. Methods: Thirteen patients with bilateral PFP (mean age 28.73 +/- 7.44 years) and 13 asymptomatic subjects (mean age 30.47 +/- 6.22 years) were recruited in the study. Gait analysis was performed using the ELITE system (BTS, Milano-Italy) with video cameras (TVC, BTS, Milano-Italy). Participants were requested to walk at a self-selected speed on a force platform, and EMG data were recorded from MH and LH muscles for 10 initial contacts by using TELEEMG (BTS, Milano-Italy). Time difference between the onsets of the MH and LH was calculated for each initial contact by using moving averaging method, then their mean was obtained for each participant. Results: The time difference between onsets of MH and LH was - 26.9 +/- 22.2 ms for PFP subjects and - 11.2 +/- 14.2 ms for control subjects, and LH mainly became activated earlier compared to MH in most of the subjects in both groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the time differences of the groups (p=0.041). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that LH displayed an earlier activation in subjects with PFP compared to control subjects during gait.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Measurement of Perceived Psychological Safety: Integration, Review and Evidences for the Scale in the Context of Turkiye

    Get PDF
Psychological safety can predict many positive individual and organizational outcomes at work, and previous research addressed how psychological safety contributes to positive work attitudes and behaviors. In Turkey, there is quite an amount of research showing the contributing role of psychological safety perception on employees' positive performance behaviors and organizational effectiveness and innovativeness. However, previous research in Turkey does not adequately show the reliability and validity of the psychological safety scale, which was developed by Edmondson (1999). Based on the suggested requirement this study aimed to investigate the psychological safety perceptions of individuals who work in various sectors in Turkey. The adapted version of the psychological safety scale was used to gain evidence for the reliability and validity of the instrument in Turkey. In total, 585 individuals working in various industries and from various occupational groups participated in the research. Both exploratory factor analysis and the confirmatory factor analysis showed that Turkish adapted version of the psychological safety scale was valid and reliable.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
