Platanus Orientalis (Plane Tree) Extract Protects Against Hyperoxaluria Induced Kidney Damage
The aim of this study is to determine whether Platanus orientalis (PO) which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and diuretic properties and used in the treatment of kidney stones as traditional folk medicine, will reduce or prevent the stone formation in the urinary system. To simulate the urolithiasis model 0.75% ethylene glycol (EG) and 1% ammonium chloride (AC) were applied to Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were divided into four groups (n=8). The control group was given standard drinking water for 5 weeks. EG group received 0.75% EG in their drinking water containing 0.75% EG and 1% AC. PO extract (100 mg/kg) was given orally for 5 weeks to the preventive group and for last 2 weeks to the therapeutic group, respectively. At the end of experiment, 24-hour urine and kidney samples were obtained. In urine samples, calcium and citrate levels were decreased and oxalate level was increased in the EG group. In kidney samples myeloperoxidase, caspase-3, N-acetyl-β-glycosaminidase (NAG) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were increased while superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione levels were decreased in the EG group. These biochemical parameters returned to control levels in both PO treatment groups. Histological findings also correlate with these results. Our findings are suggested that PO treatments is effective in both preventive and therapeutic groups. © 2022 Marmara University Press

Evaluation of the Compatibility of Preoperative Mrcp and Intraoperative Cholangiography in Imaging of the Bile Ducts in Living Donor Liver Transplantation
DONMEZ, RAMAZAN/0000-0003-2455-6380To evaluate the compatibility of preoperative 3D magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (3D MRCP) and intraoperative cholangiographies (IOC) of donors using Huang classification in living donor liver transplantation. Thirty-six consecutive right donor hepatectomy cases were retrospectively analyzed with preoperative MRCP and intraoperative cholangiography. Biliary variants were determined according to the Huang classification. Compatibility in MRCP and IOC was evaluated. 3D MRCP accurately determined the biliary anatomy in 32 of 36 cases (88.88%). The IOC of the 36 donors showed 25 normal bifurcations and 11 biliary variants. For detecting normal and variant anatomy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were 96.0%, 72.7%, 88.9%, and 88.9.0%, respectively. There was a substantial inter-rater agreement between IOC and MRCP in determining normal and variant anatomy (kappa = 0.724, p < 0.001). 3D MRCP is a non-invasive useful method to evaluate non-dilated bile ducts preoperatively in living donor liver transplantation. The eligibility criteria determined according to preoperative MRCP images should also be confirmed by intraoperative cholangiography.Science Citation Index Expande
Space as a Source of Alienation in the Context of Migration Debates
Migration is one of the main agenda items of the time we live in. Migration mobility, which is defined as an act of displacement in its basic meaning corresponds to a process affecting many dynamics. It does not seem possible to make an overarching immigration definition due to the reasons for its emergence, the effect it creates on the social structure and the difference in its results. The phenomenon of immigration existing in the literature with definitions closer to its essential sense such as 'spatial mobility', 'act of displacement', 'transition from one place to another with the intention of settlement' does not contain the content of an absolute border crossing action. Crossing a border does not end the act of migration, but immigrants encounter ethnic, religious, social, class and many other thresholds and borders. For this reason, migration is not just an act of displacement. Immigrants migrate to places, cultures, social structures, life and many other aspects of new geographies. Social elements and spaces established with daily lives are one of the thresholds faced by the immigrant. Immigrants are stuck between the places in their geographies and the places and lifestyles in their new places where they came through immigration. This contrast manifests itself as soon as they step into a new geography and this situation transforms into an element of oppression for immigrants. The migration does not only correspond to the loss of physical spaces, but also to the dissipation of all social and daily life. For that reason, Arent, Heidegger and Blanchot define migrations of the current time period is independent of a physical displacement, alienation from the social and daily life acts to which one belongs and estrangement of the individual from his own essence. Alienation of one's own self, identity and sociality, drags them into an everlasting migration. For this reason, Blanchot emphasises that immigration starts as soon as the immigrant gets used to the places where he/she migrates, not when he/she fails to get used to the places. It is worth remembering that the space cited here has abstract content as well as concrete construction activity. Space according to Lefebvre exists as a product of the cultural, social and historical acts of societies. For this reason, it is specific to a community. It incorporates not only a concreteness, but also the mentality containing the traces of communities. Space represents a critical threshold in debates about immigration. For immigrants, space is both the grounds fin- establishing a sense of belonging and preserving their own identity, as well as the source of alienation and mental migration. This contrast is discussed in the study through Derrida's "hospitality" statement and the concepts of spatial memory and belonging. Immigrant according to Derrida, encounters a sovereign power defining itself as the owner of the place, in other words, the host, in the geography where he migrated. The host offers a place to the immigrant, whom he/she sees as a guest, and hosts him/her in his home. In fact, the landlord defines where, how and in what way he or she will live, together with the space and draws limits to him/ her. That he/she presents his/her way of life to the immigrant as if it were a rule that he/she must abide by. This style of presentation is a kind of imposition, because it doesn't contain any preference option in it: "I host you in my home. Welcome to my home, save to adhere my language, tradition, lifestyle, laws and rules". This language of life that the immigrant does not recognise and is not familiar with, is an act of mental 'violence perpetrated against him/her. This act of violence takes place through space. Although the immigrant loses his/her place by experiencing a physical migration, he/she brings all the acts of his social and daily life with him/her through his memory. These acts kept in the memory, stands out as the founding elements of the space in the new lands. Immigrants attempt to create their own spaces and lives through their memories instead of venues and lifestyles offered to them. For this reason, space is also the opposite of mental migration and alienation as the preservation of ego and identity. The space, in the migration actions that took place in the current time period, on one hand, is the main actor of eternal immigration and on the other hand protecting identity. The immigrant is stuck between the space offered to him/her and his/her actions and spatial memory in the new lands he/she has come from. The study aims to examine the situation of the immigrant, to question the source of alienation and (main) migration over this sense incorporated by the space.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
The Relationship Between Malnutrition and Subjective Taste Change Experienced by Patients With Cancer Receiving Outpatient Chemotherapy Treatment
Taylan, Secil/0000-0002-7243-0734; ozkan, ilknur/0000-0002-0826-5682Taste changes and malnutrition are two important problems in patients with different types of cancer. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between malnutrition and subjective taste changes experienced by cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy. The study used a cross-sectional design and was carried out with 1382 patients with cancer receiving outpatient chemotherapy. Of the patients, 63.1% experienced taste changes. It was determined that 8.8% of patients had malnutrition according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment. The mean scores of patients experiencing malnutrition and being at risk for malnutrition from all sub-dimensions of The Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) were found to be higher than the patient group evaluated to have normal nutrition. It was determined that a unit increase in the scores of the parageusia and phantogeusia subscales of the CiTAS increased the risk of malnutrition by 3.36 times (%95 CI= 2.68-4.02). In line with these results, we recommend that patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy should be routinely evaluated in terms of taste changes in clinical practice and that they should be followed up in terms of malnutrition in the presence of taste changes.Science Citation Index Expande
The Evolution of Unprocessed Food Inflation in Turkey: an Exploratory Study on Select Products
Tekguc, Hasan/0000-0002-3902-4486Food price increases stem from economic, agricultural, and political factors. Understanding the dynamics behind the food price formation process and assessing how potential factors contribute to food price changes will significantly affect policies formulated to manage food price increases. High food inflation rates have been a chronic problem in Turkey over the last decade, with unprocessed food prices rising faster than general price levels. In this article, we use exploratory analyses based on economic principles rather than econometric analyses. First, our results indicate that exchange rates are strongly associated with domestic food prices due to dependence on imported inputs. Second, deep-dive analyses on select products show that global price movements and pass-through prices from producer to consumer are not solely responsible for price increases.Social Science Citation Inde
The Reflections of Gastronomic Experience on Brand Loyalty
Gastronomic experience can be defined as the result of the interaction of all processes, especially in the high cuisine, which includes social, emotional, intellectual, imaginary and technical situations beyond a mere eating activity. The number of establishments that have made it their mission to offer such experiences to people has also increased significantly compared to the past. In this case , in line with the increase with the competition between brands, businesses have entered into new searches in order not to lose their loyal customers In addition, the number of people who are conscious and aware of high cuisine continues to increase day by day. As a result of people's gastronomic experience, the number of knowledgeable people who interpret/understand the food consciously and share it with the people around has increased significantly. In line with the facilitation of access to information, the development of the information spectrum of individuals is one of the basic phenomena of today. In this direction, especially the food and beverage businesses that appeal to high cuisine use gastronomic experience as an important marketing weapon. In this context, the study aims to quantitatively question the experience elements that are effective in creating brand loyalty and to produce scientific data in this direction, considering the expectations of the people of the food and beverage businesses that try to offer gastronomic experience. The questionnaire developed for this goal was applied to 335 foodie (moderate version of gourmet) participants in groups relatively high in social economic status, and the reflection of the gastronomic experience they had in the luxury restaurants (fine dining) on brand loyalty was analyzed quantitatively. As a result of the research, it has been determined that gastronomic experience has positive effects on attitudinal brand loyalty, but there is no consequential relationship between behavioral brand loyalty.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
The Effect of Aromatherapy and Su Jok Interventions on Post-Cesarean Pain
ELMALI SIMSEK, HULYA/0000-0003-0372-1981Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of aromatherapy and Su Jok interventions as non-pharmacological methods of relieving pain after cesarean section. Materials and methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 120 women who had cesarean delivery in the gynecology and obstetrics department of a training and research hospital between February 9 and October 2, 2019. The participants were allocated to the aromatherapy group, Su Jok group, Su Jok and aromatherapy group, or control group using block randomization based on parity. Su Jok was performed using buckwheat seed; aromatherapy was applied using lavender, eucalyptus, or rose oil. Data were collected using a participant information form and pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups in mean pain levels before or after the intervention, although the control group had less initial pain compared to the intervention groups. However, all three intervention groups showed significant decreases in pain levels immediately and 30 min after the intervention compared to pre-intervention levels (p < 0.05). The intervention in all three groups reduced the level of pain. In particular, the pain level of the Su Jok group reached from moderate to mild. There was no significant change in the control group. Conclusions: Aromatherapy and Su Jok interventions performed separately and simultaneously in addition to routine hospital care were more effective in reducing post-cesarean pain than routine care alone.Science Citation Index Expande
Design, Synthesis and Anticancer Activity Studies of Novel 4-Butylaminophenyl Hydrazide-Hydrazones as Apoptotic Inducers
Han, Muhammed Ihsan/0000-0001-5610-0869In this study, a series of the novel Tetracaine derivatives bearing hydrazide-hydrazone moiety were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for anticancer activity. The structures of these compounds were characterized by spectral (H-1-C-13 NMR, FT-IR, and HR-MS analyses) methods. All synthesized compounds (2a-1) were screened for anticancer activity against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and lung carcinoma (A549) cell lines. Against HepG2 and A549 cell lines, among the synthesized compounds, 4-(Butylamino)-N'-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methylidene]benzohydrazide (2i) demonstrated the most potent anticancer activity with IC50 values 28 and 7 mu M, respectively. Possible cytotoxic effects of compounds (2a-1) on both normal human lung fibroblast (MCR-5) and normal human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cell lines were assessed. Inhibition of anti-apoptotic protein Bax and Bcl-2 was investigated in HepG2 and A549 cells treated with compound 2i using qRT-PCR. Apoptosis was also detected by Annexin V studies. The flow cytometric analysis results showed that compound 2i treatment of HepG2 and A549 cells significantly increased apoptotic cell populations while decreasing viabilities in these carcinomas in a dose-dependent manner after 72 h of incubation.
