Where Are We and What Should We Do in Cleaner Production Transformation

    No full text
Until recently, production models developed according to market conditions focused on reducing costs and increasing profitability at the expense of the destruction of natural resources and the deterioration of ecological balance and human health. However, today, with the effects of the deterioration in the ecosystem reaching sensible dimensions and being accepted as a global threat, a new production approach is needed. Due to environmental pressures, new markets and scarce resources, development, and economic growth are being tried to be redefined. Traditional production methods and environmental technologies are no longer sufficient to provide resource efficiency and increase environmental performance. Therefore, the need for new systems, processes and technologies has arisen for the restructuring of the industry and the creation of green business models. In this chapter, it is discussed how the cleaner production approach will contribute to this transformation, considering the green transformation efforts in question and considering the current situation of the Turkish industry. © 2023, IGI Global

The design process, which expresses the act of designing in line with a thought and the steps that make up the product resulting from this action, constitutes the essence of design education studio environments. The methods and thought approaches that can be followed in this process are always among the issues questioned. With the study, this issue is approached through digital stories. The fact that digital storytelling, which is a lot of research in terms of its contributions in education-related fields, hasn't yet taken place sufficiently in the field of design education constitutes the starting point of the study. So, the study created with qualitative research method aims to raise awareness of the space design education literature on digital storytelling. In order to gain this awareness, the similarities and differences of the digital storytelling and design process has analyzed. The study determined that the design process and digital storytelling intersect with aspects of making implicit information visible, occurring in line with a problem or starting point, and including similar process stages. However, differences exist between these two concepts. This result provides a theoretical framework for those who want to benefit from digital storytelling.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Objective:To evaluate the use of a computer-based biodex balance exercise system (BBS) on balance, neuropathic pain, clinical presentation and nerve function in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: A total of 32 participants with DPN were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG performed exercises using the BBS twice weekly for 8 weeks, while CG were informed regarding diabetes self-management. At baseline and after study completion, participants underwent balance (postural stability and fall risk) and neuropathic pain assessment (DN4 questionnaire) and were screened using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and nerve conduction test. Results: Among the baseline participants, 14 in the IG and 13 in the CG completed the study. Balance training improved postural stability (overall, p<0.001), fall risk (p<0.001), neuropathic pain (p=0.01) and symptoms (p<0.001), and clinical presentation (p=0.02), but not nerve function, within the IG. At follow-up, IG displayed significantly improved stability (p<0.001) and fall risk (p=0.02) and decreased neuropathic symptoms (p=0.01) compared to the CG. Conclusion: Computer-based balance exercises improve balance, pain, and clinical presentation of DPN, but not nerve function, in patients with DPN.Science Citation Index Expande

Paricalcitol Protects Against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Injury in Endothelial Cells Through Suppression of Apoptosis

The vascular endothelium is one of the main targets of oxidative stress which plays an important role in the pathophysiology of vascular damage. Recent studies show that vitamin D can positively regulate endothelial functions in various chronic diseases and in cases of increased oxidative stress. In our study, we investigated the restorative and protective potentials of paricalcitol which is frequently used in patients with chronic renal failure, a vitamin D analogue, in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) before and after H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Paricalcitol treatment after the oxidative stress induced by H2O2 increased cell viability in endothelial cells depending on the dose that was used. While paricalcitol (500 nM) decreased caspase-3 activity and mitochondrial membrane potential loss, it increased nitric oxide (NO) production and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels. Paricalcitol treatment before oxidative stress increased cell viability. It increased NO production and mitochondrial membrane potential while significantly reducing caspase-3 activity. While paricalcitol caused a significant inhibition of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) reductase activity in healthy endothelial cells, it did not cause a significant change on the PDI reductase activity under oxidative stress conditions. Present study showed that paricalcitol has restorative and protective effects on endothelial cells against oxidative injury, but these effects occur at high concentrations of paricalcitol.Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Unit [SAG-C-DRP-111115-0503]The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: The study was supported by a grant from Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Unit (Project No: SAG-C-DRP-111115-0503).Science Citation Index Expande

It plays an important role in scavenging free radicals and stimulating antioxidant enzymes. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of Mel and/or insulin treatment on oxidative liver and pancreas injuries in diabetic rats.MethodsMale Wistar albino rats were assigned into 5 groups. Group I: control animals. Group II: diabetes was induced via a single dose of STZ (60 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally. Group III: diabetic rats treated with Mel (10 mg/kg/day). Group IV: diabetic rats given insulin (6U/kg) subcutaneously. Group V: diabetic rats that received insulin and Mel at the same dose and time. After 12 weeks of the experiment, the animals were decapitated, liver and pancreas tissues were collected.ResultsThe results indicated that reduced glutathione levels in liver and pancreatic tissue decreased, while protein carbonyl, advanced oxidized protein products and lipid peroxidation levels were elevated in diabetic group. Antioxidant enzyme activities decreased in liver tissues but increased in pancreatic tissues of the diabetic group. Administration of Mel, insulin or Mel + insulin reversed these biochemical changes in the diabetic animals.ConclusionThis work shows that in long-term oxidative stress conditions caused by STZ-induced diabetes, either Mel or Mel + insulin administration may improve the deteriorated oxidant/antioxidant system in both the liver and pancreas tissues. These results suggested that Mel alone or Mel + insulin treatments might have a significant role in protecting against liver and pancreatic damage in STZ diabetic rats via different antioxidant effects.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

    Hipergerçeklik Çağında Medya ve Tüketim

    Get PDF
Böylece, platform katılımcıları, sunulan \"hiper-gerçeklik\" içindeki dijital \"yaşamlarının\" her alanında \"üretüketici\" kimliklerini koruyabilmektedirler

The Factors Associated With School Readiness: Sensory Processing, Motor, and Visual Perceptual Skills, and Executive Functions in Kindergarten Children

    No full text
Aydoner Bektas, Selen/0000-0002-0663-1802Many developmental skills are related to children's school readiness in the early years, and these skills are essential for later achievement. Some of these skills include sensory processing, motor and visual perceptual skills, and executive functions. To date, limited research has examined these skills associated with school readiness. This study investigated the relationship between sensory processing, motor and visual perceptual skills, and executive functions, and school readiness in kindergarten children. A total of 138 kindergarten children administered the Sensory Profile, the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test 2- Brief Form, the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills-3, the Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory, and the Primary School Readiness Scale. The results showed that sensory processing, motor and visual perceptual skills, and executive functions were correlated with children's school readiness, and these skills were also highly predictive of children's school readiness (p < 0.05). It is necessary for future studies to consider these skills when assessing school readiness and to include strategies to develop these skills in intervention programs. All authors thank the participants of this study. All authors thank the participants of this study.Science Citation Index Expande

Forty Years of Event Graphs in Research and Education

    No full text
Forty years ago, in 1983, Lee Schruben proposed the Event Graph formalism and modeling language, subsequently defining the paradigm of Event-Based Simulation, in a precise way, which had been pioneered 20 years before by SIMSCRIPT. The purpose of this panel is for a group of Event Graph researchers both from Operations Research and Computer Science, including the inventor of Event Graphs and one of his former PhD students who has made essential contributions to their theory, to discuss their views on the history and potential of Event Graph modeling and simulation. In particular, the adoption of Event Graphs as a discrete process modeling language in Discrete Event Simulation and in Computer Science, and their potential as a foundation for the entire field of Discrete Event Simulation and for the fields of process modeling and AI in Computer Science is debated. © 2023 IEEE.King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, KFUP
