    Whey Protein Concentrate Ameliorates the Methotrexate-Induced Liver and Kidney Damage

    Sener, Goksel/0000-0001-7444-6193; Tufan, Elif/0000-0003-0684-3693; Tunali-Akbay, Tugba/0000-0002-2091-9298Methotrexate (MTX) is a cytotoxic immunosuppressant that is widely used in the treatment of tumours, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. This study aims to evaluate the effects of whey proteins on MTX-induced liver and kidney damage by focusing on oxidant-antioxidant systems and eating habits. The study was conducted in four groups of thirty Sprague-Dawley rats (control, control + whey protein concentrate (WPC), MTX, MTX + WPC). A single dose of 20 mg/kg MTX was administered intraperitoneally to the MTX groups. Control and MTX groups were given 2 g/kg WPC by oral gavage every day for 10 d. At the end of day 10, blood samples were drawn and liver and kidney tissues were removed. MTX administration increased the lipid peroxidation level and decreased glutathione level, superoxide dismutase and glutathione-S-transferase activities in the liver and kidney. Administration of WPC significantly reduced the damage caused by MTX in the liver and kidney. While a decrease in serum urea level and an increase in serum creatinine level were detected in the MTX group, WPC administration reversed these results up to control group levels. Administration of WPC to the MTX group significantly reversed the histopathological damage scores of the liver and kidney. WPC administration ameliorated the MTX-induced oxidative damage in the liver and kidney tissues due to its antioxidant properties. Liver and kidney damage can be prevented by using whey proteins as a nutraceutical in MTX therapy. The objective of the present study is to elucidate for the first time the effects of Cotinus coggygria (CC) ethanol extract (CCE) on colonic structure and inflammation of acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats. Colonic damage was assessed using disease activity index score, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Also, in vitro antioxidant activity of CCE was investigated by ABTS methods. Total phytochemical content of CCE was measured spectroscopically. Acetic acid caused colonic damage according to disease activity index and macroscopic scoring. CCE significantly reversed these damages. While the levels of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and TGF-1beta increased in tissue with UC, IL-10 level decreased. CCE increased inflammatory cytokine levels to values close to the sham group. At the same time, while markers indicating disease severity such as VEGF, COX-2, PGE2, and 8-OHdG indicated the disease in the colitis group, these values returned to normal with CCE. Histological research results support biochemical analysis. CCE exhibited significant antioxidant against ABTS radical. Also, CCE was found to have a high content of total polyphenolic compounds. These findings provide evidence that CCE might be benefit as a promising novel therapy in the treatment of UC in humans due to high polyphenol content and justify the use of CC in folkloric medicine for treatment of inflamed diseases.Science Citation Index Expande

    The Effect of Electromyography (emg)-Driven Robotic Treatment on the Recovery of the Hand Nine Years After Stroke

    OZTURK, Necla/0000-0002-6546-2914Objective: To investigate the effect of electromyography (EMG)-driven robotic therapy on the recovery of the hand in a stroke case lasting 9 years.Case: An 18-year-old patient with hemiparesis due to the ischemic lesion was admitted to our clinic with hand impairment. Fifteen sessions (5 weeks x 3 times) of robotic rehabilitation were applied with the Hand of Hope. Average EMG (mV) of flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle, average force (N) and the rate of force development (RFD)(N/s) were also assessed before and after the treatment following the 5th and 10th sessions and at the end of treatment. Also, Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity Scale (FMU-UE), Motor Activity Log (MAL), Canadian Occupational Performance Score (COPM) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were used for assessment before and after the treatment.Results: The average EMG measured from FDS increased from 0.093-0.133 mV. The average force and average RFD increased from 45.6-97.7 and from 135.6-172.6 respectively. While affected and/or unaffected side force ratio increased dramatically from 54%-82%, the FMA-UE score increased from 56-59. The MAL quality of use score increased from 3.93-4.13. Performance and satisfaction scores of COPM changed from 5.25-7.25 and 4.5-8.25 respectively. VAS score for fatigue changed from 6 to 4.Discussion: The improvement achieved 9 years later with 15 sessions of rehabilitation suggests that im-provement may be possible for chronic stroke patients.(c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. The parent compounds were prepared using the sol-gel production method and the ultrasonic bath mixing technique was involved to prepare desired composite materials. SEM analyses revealed that the parents and composite materials have the same surface morphologies except for their grain sizes. EDS analyses were performed to identify the possible/candidate phases in the composite materials. These candidate phases are involved in refining XRD data. The fact that the Curie temperatures (TC) of the composite materials were found to be much higher than those of the parent compounds was another proof that composite compounds were obtained instead of composite materials by using the ultrasonic bath mixing technique.     The Direct and Indirect Effects of Irrational Beliefs on Perceived Performance: The Mediation Role of Emotions and Automatic Thoughts

A cross-sectional study design with a convenient sampling method was used in the study. Participants included 395 athletes from basketball, football, handball, and volleyball and consisted of 267 male (Mage = 20.73, SD = 2.37) and 128 female (Mage = 21.33, SD = 2.17) athletes who voluntarily participated in the study. Data was analyzed via a path analysis and irrational beliefs were shown to negatively predict positive emotions and positive automatic thoughts, but these beliefs positively predicted negative emotions and negative automatic thoughts. The direct effect of irrational beliefs on perceived performance was not significant, but its indirect effect on perceived performance through emotions and automatic thoughts was significant. Irrational beliefs negatively predict perceived performance through emotions and automatic thoughts. It is concluded that emotions and automatic thoughts play a significant role in the relationship between irrational beliefs and perceived performance.Social Science Citation Inde

    Novel Azole-Urea Hybrids as Vegfr-2 Inhibitors: Synthesis,<i> In</I><i> Vitro</I> Antiproliferative Evaluation And<i> In</I><i> Silico</I> Studies

    Danis, Ozkan/0000-0003-1781-0520; kulabas, necla/0000-0003-2273-5094; Yelekci, Kemal/0000-0002-0052-4926; Cevik, Ozge/0000-0002-9325-3757The vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) is a receptor tyrosine kinase known to be abnormally expressed in various malignant tumors, including breast cancer, and is considered one of the most important contributors to tumor angiogenesis. Sorafenib is one of many VEGFR-2 inhibitors that have received approval for clinical use from the US FDA in recent years. Accordingly, in this study, the synthesis of two new pyrazoles, six 1,3,4-oxadiazoles, four 1,3,4-thiadiazoles, and ten 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione derivatives having structural characteristics similar to sorafenib was carried out. A preliminary screening of synthesized compounds and known inhibitors sorafenib and staurosporine at 10 mu M concentration on in vitro activity of VEGFR-2 was performed, and compounds 10c, 8a, and 11 g were identified as the most potent derivatives with% VEGFR-2 residual activities lower than 30%, and dose-dependent inhibition studies was carried out to determine the IC50 values of these inhibitors. Compound 10c was found to be the most potent inhibitor of VEGFR-2 activity with an IC50 value of 0.664 mu M. The anti-proliferative activity of synthesized derivatives was assessed against a breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell line, a triple negative human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231) cell line, and noncancerous fibroblast cells (L929). Compound 8a displayed superior activity when compared to sorafenib against MCF-7 (7.69 fold) and MDA-MB-231 (1.52 fold) cell lines while displaying 3.75-fold less toxicity against the normal L929 cell line. Annexin V binding assay revealed that compound 8a significantly increased early and late apoptosis in MCF-7 cells and late apoptosis and necrosis in MDA-MB-231 cells. Computational studies such as molecular docking and ADMET evaluation were performed to elucidate the binding interactions and druglikeness of the synthesized compounds.     Cumhuriyet’in 100. Yılında Enerji Sektörünün Durumu: Ab Türkiye Raporları İncelemesi

    Enerji, bütün ekonomik faaliyetlerin girdisi olmasının yanı sıra, özellikle son yıllarda güvenlik ve çevresel sorunlar nedeniyle de ülkelerin öncelikli konusu haline gelmiştir. Ayrıca, doğrusal ekonomiden yeşil ve döngüsel ekonomiye geçiş sürecinde enerji sektörü en önemli sektör olarak kabul edilmektedir. Bu nedenle, bu çalışmada Türkiye’deki enerji sektörünün Cumhuriyet’in 100. yılındaki durumu incelenmektedir. Bu amaçla çalışmada öncelikle, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin enerji sektörünün gelişimi ve projeksiyonları incelenmiş ve Avrupa Birliği verileri ile birlikte değerlendirilmiştir. Bu amaçla çalışmada betimsel yöntem kullanılmış ve veriler raporlarla desteklendiği için, çalışma hem nicel hem de nitel yöntemleri bir arada kullanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları incelendiğinde, Türkiye’nin enerji ithalat bağımlılığının %70 seviyelerinde olması, Türkiye’nin hızla artan enerji talebini karşılayamadığını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu durumun yanı sıra sanayi sektörü, en fazla enerji tüketimi olan sektördür ve Türkiye’nin enerji projeksiyonları da bu artışın devam edeceğini göstermektedir. Çalışmada, dikkat çeken ayrı bir unsur ise, %98’i petrole bağımlı olan ulaştırma sektöründe yıllar itibariyle hızlı bir artış görülmesidir. Çalışmada bu veriler AB verileri ile de karşılaştırılmıştır. Ayrıca, AB’nin Türkiye için her yıl hazırladığı ilerleme/ülke raporlarındaki enerji faslı incelenerek, Türkiye’nin enerji sektöründeki AB gerekliliklerine ne kadar uyum sağladığı ortaya konmuştur. Sonuç olarak, Türkiye’nin en büyük ihracat ülke grubu olan AB’nin uygulamaya koyacağı Avrupa Yeşil Mutabakatı’ndaki gereklilikler nedeniyle de Türkiye’nin enerji sektöründe yapısal ve acil dönüşüm gerçekleştirilmesi gerekmektedir

    Evaluation of Ayres Sensory Integration<sup>®</Sup> Intervention on Sensory Processing and Motor Function in a Child With Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome: a Case Report

    Balikci, Aymen/0000-0002-7552-8235The Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RSTS) literature is limited about sensory integration, which is a foundational neurological function of the central nervous system that may affect the development of cognitive, social, and motor skills. The aim of this case report was to investigate the effects of Ayres Sensory Integration(& REG;) (ASI) intervention on processing and integrating sensations, motor functions and parental goals of 3-year-old child with RSTS. Analysis of assessment data reviewed before and after treatment. Assessment collected by interview, Sensory Profile (SP), Sensory Processing Measure-Preschool (SPM-P) Home, Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2), Gross Motor Function Measurement-88 (GMFM-88), and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Progress toward goals and objectives was measured with Goal Attainment Scale (GAS). ASI intervention was implemented 3 times per week for 8 weeks. At pre-intervention, SP and SPM-P Home revealed prominent sensory processing and integration difficulties in this case. PDMS-2 scores indicated the child was far behind his peers in fine and gross motor areas. In addition, systematic observations determined that the child's GMFCS level was III. After 8 weeks of ASI intervention significant improvements were found in parent reports of sensory processing in the areas of vestibular, tactile, and oral functioning on the Sensory Profile. Gains in functional motor skills were found on the GMFM-88 and the GMFCS. Consistent with these results, significant gains at or above expected levels of performance were found on GAS goals which reflected the family's main concerns for social participation, feeding, play, and movement. There are limited studies on sensory processing and integration in children with RSTS. This case report identified sensory processing and integration difficulties for the first time in a child with RSTS. Results also provide preliminary support for the positive effects of ASI intervention on sensory processing, functional motor skills, and parental goals of a child with RSTS.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

    The Earthquakes in Turkey and Their Effects on Nursing and Community Health

    Dikec, Gul/0000-0002-7593-4014BackgroundSevere damage was experienced in 10 provinces in Turkey, and the north of Syria, with the earthquakes that hit Kahramanmaras at midnight and afternoon on February 6, 2023. AimThe authors aimed to give brief information to the international nursing community about the situation related to earthquakes in the aspects of nurses. ConclusionThese earthquakes caused traumatic processes in the affected regions. Many people, including nurses and other healthcare professionals, died or were injured. The results demonstrated that the required preparedness had not been applied. Nurses went to these areas voluntarily or on assignment and cared for individuals with injured. The universities in the country passed to distance education because of the shortage of safe places for victims. This situation also negatively influenced nursing education and clinical practice by interrupting in-person education one more time after the COVID-19 pandemic.     The Effects of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Motivational Interviewing on Emotions, Automatic Thoughts, and Perceived Performance of Elite Female Volleyball Players

    URFA, OSMAN/0000-0002-9821-671X; Asci, Hulya/0000-0002-6650-6931Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy intervention alone (REBT-A) or with motivational interviewing (REBT + MI) on the emotions, automatic thoughts, and perceived performance of elite female volleyball players. Design: and method: Single-case, staggered multiple-baseline AB and ABC designs were adapted in the study. Five female volleyball players participated in the study, of which three players participated in the REBT-A and two players participated in the REBT + MI. The athletes were competing in the national volleyball league (Mage = 28, SD = 5.52). All participants were elite athletes with at least ten years of sports experience. Three scores (T1, T2, T3) were calculated for the athletes' perceived performance, emotion, and automatic thoughts. T1 was the baseline score calculated before the sessions. T2 was calculated after the first two sessions (the first three sessions for REBT + MI) and T3 was calculated after the last three sessions. In the data analysis, percentage changes, effect size, and visual analyzes were used in the T1, T2, and T3 scores. Results: REBT-A and REBT + MI interventions increased perceived performance, positive emotions, and positive automatic thoughts, and decreased negative emotions and negative automatic thoughts. REBT + MI was more advantageous than REBT-A in increasing positive emotion, positive automatic thought, and perceived performance. Conclusions: As a result, REBT alone or with motivational interviewing has a positive effect on perceived performance, emotions, and automatic thoughts, but REBT + MI has greater potential to increase positive constructs.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde
