Dikec, Gul/0000-0002-7593-4014This qualitative study was carried out with a phenomenological design to determine the life experiences of the parents of children with hearing loss. The study sample consisted of twenty parents, who did not have hearing loss, of children with hearing loss registered in a special education and rehabilitation center. The data were collected through in-depth interviews in Istanbul between December and January 2022. Colaizzi's phenomenological interpretation method was used for qualitative data analysis. It was determined that parents of children with hearing loss experienced anxiety, sadness, and happiness during diagnosis. They needed more information at first, but then they gained knowledge in the process, and it took work to accept this process. They stated that having a child with hearing loss requires more time, responsibility, and effort than other children. This situation affects their social life, and they experience interpersonal conflicts. When parents were asked how they coped, they said they did it through prayer, social support, or time to themselves. It can be recommended to apply psychosocial intervention programs to the parents of children with hearing loss, especially their mothers, from the first diagnosis process.Science Citation Index Expande

Dikec, Gul/0000-0002-7593-4014Objective: The aim of this study was to qualitatively examine Turkish tweets about schizophrenia in respect of stigmatization and discrimination within a one-month period and to conduct emotional analysis using artificial intelligence applications. Method: Using the keyword 'schizophrenia,' Turkish tweets were gathered from the Python Tweepy application between December 19, 2020 and January 18, 2021. Features were extracted using the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) method and artificial neural networks and tweets were classified as positive, neutral, or negative. Approximately 5% of the tweets were qualitatively analyzed, constituting those most frequently liked and retweeted. Results: The study found that, of the total of 3406 schizophrenia-related messages shared in Turkey over a period of one-month, 2996 were original, and were then retweeted a total of 1823 times, and liked by 25,413 people. It was determined that 63.4% of the tweets shared about schizophrenia contained negative emotions, 28.7% were neutral, and 7.71% expressed positive emotions. Within the scope of the qualitative analysis, 145 tweets were examined and classified under four main themes and two sub-themes; namely, news about violent patients, insult (insulting people in interpersonal relationships, insulting people in the news), mockery, and information. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the Turkish tweets about schizophrenia, which were emotionally analyzed using artificial intelligence were found often to contain negative emotions. It was also seen that Twitter users used the term schizophrenia, not in a medical sense but to insult and make fun of individuals, frequently shared the news that patients were victims or perpetrators of violence, and the messages shared by professional branch organizations or mental health professionals were primarily for conveying information to the public.Social Science Citation Inde

SANCI, YAGMUR/0000-0002-7272-1005; Yildiz, Suzan/0000-0002-2528-2185Background: Nausea and vomiting, frequently induced by chemotherapy, can delay treatment protocols and the healing process. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine how aromatherapy inhalation with peppermint and lemon using a diffuser affects nausea-vomiting management and quality of life in 2-12-year-old children undergoing chemotherapy. Design and methods: The study utilized a pretest-posttest control group experimental design with randomized groups. A total of 90 children who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The experimental group received Mentha Piperita and Citrus Lemon essential oils through a diffuser, while the placebo group received water through a diffuser. The control group did not receive any intervention. Results: Pulse and respiratory rates of children treated with aromatherapy were found to be significantly lower than the other groups. After aromatherapy application, quality of life of the children in the experimental group was significantly higher than the other groups. The change in the Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching scores of the experimental group on the 4th chemotherapy cycle compared to the 1st chemotherapy cycle was significantly higher than the change in the other groups. Conclusions: Consequently, it was determined that inhalation aromatherapy with peppermint-lemon was effective in the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea-vomiting symptoms and quality of life compared to the placebo and control groups. Practice implications: Inhalation aromatherapy with mint-lemon can be used as an alternative method to improve the quality of life in children with leukemia who suffer from chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Rats in HF and HF+APC groups were fed using HF for 16 weeks and in the last four weeks of this period vehicle solution or APC (25 mg/kg) was administered orally five days a week, respectively. Control group was fed with standart lab chow for 16 weeks. Cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoproteins, leptin, estrogen, testosterone, LH and FSH were estimated in blood serum. Sperm parameters were analysed from the epididymis. Testicular malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2deoxyguanosine, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase levels were estimated biochemically. Testicular morphology, proliferative, apoptotic and NOX2-positive cells were analysed histologically. Results: HF-induced obesity caused significant alterations in serum lipid and hormone profiles. Testicular malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2deoxyguanosine, and myeloperoxidase levels increased, glutathione and superoxide dismutase levels decreased in this group. Moreover, altered sperm parameters, increased degenerated seminiferous tubules, apoptotic and NOX2 - positive cells and decreased proliferative cells were observed in the HF group. All these biochemical and histological alterations improved in the HF+APC group. Conclusion: HF-induced obesity causes altreations in lipid values, sperm parameters and testicular morphology by increasing oxidative stress through NOX2 activity. Apocynin might prevent testis damage via regulating oxidant/antioxidant balance.Marmara University Scientific Research Project Committee [SAG-C-YLP-131.217.0655]Funding: This study was financially supported by Marmara University Scientific Research Project Committee (SAG-C-YLP-131.217.0655) .Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Speculative Fiction and Pattern Recognition: Narrative Models for a Retrained Intuition

    No full text
Ustun, Berkay/0000-0003-4718-505XThe notion of pattern recognition emerged in the late 1950s as an extension of advances in cybernetics and information theory. From the start, authors of science fiction and speculative fiction narratives made their own explorations of the concept, taking it to fields and extremes not predicted by the state of development of pattern recognition technologies. I argue that a pair of these narratives provide opportunities to observe the development of a public understanding of, and imaginaries deriving from, a vision of perception geared toward patterns, arrangements, and configurations that involve historical change. More specifically, these narratives stage questions of historical meaning and intuitive grasp of patterns of consumer behavior by modifying the notion they borrow from computational research through the intermediary of media theory. A second goal of the article is to examine literary history by taking the relevant works of Brunner and Gibson as favorable cases for observing the beginnings and transformations of the reception of pattern recognition concept by speculative fiction. The common reference they make to historical concretion serves as a constant across their differences here. Both fictions seem to stage the possibilities of pattern literacy as a human capacity that includes but is not reducible to one of its most famous and problematic avatars, which is that of a sense of conspiracy, belief gone awry, and/or paranoia (which, according to Fredric Jameson, is the "poor person's cognitive mapping''). Methodologically relying on a combination of media theory and close readings, the goal here is to ascertain whether such fictions constitute viable cases for a "pattern recognition from below", as distinct from a data-intensive pursuit. In this sense, this study neither constitutes an intellectual history of pattern recognition that reduces the object of its study to mere accouterments of context nor simply a close reading of each of the texts on their own terms. It is a comparative exercise that aims to gain surplus of historical and textual intelligibility through the juxtaposition of its chronologically distant narratives. From different angles, the two close readings treat the same core problem of the possibility to retain an affirmative approach to the historical-morphological possibilities inherent in pattern recognition and not consign it to an "ideology" of the information society. Preparation and Application of Caffeic Acid Imprinted Polymer

    No full text
In the present study, molecularly imprinted polymers were synthesized using caffeic acid (CA) as a template molecule and then used for the extraction of CA and chlorogenic acid (CLA) from complex matrices. Syntheses were carried out in tetrahydrofuran as porogenic solvent using 4-vinyl pyridine, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, and 1-vinyl imidazole as monomers, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslinker and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. In polymerization processes, different ratios of the template:monomer:crosslinker (T:M:CrL) were used to obtain the most suitable polymer. Caffeic acid:4-vinylpiridine:ethylene glycol dimethacrylate's 1:4:16 mole ratio of MIP was determined as the most convenient polymer for CA recognition. In addition, nonimprinted polymers (NIPs) without templates were prepared. Dynamic and static adsorption tests were applied to determine the absorption features of the NIPs and CA-MIPs. Separation and purification studies of CA and CLA were performed with molecular imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) application. All steps of MISPE (loading, washing, elution) were optimized by HPLC analysis.Istanbul University [10974]Acknowledgements The authors would like to express their gratitude to the Research Fund of Istanbul University for support given to corresponding author's thesis project (10974) with the thesis title "Utilization of new materials in specific separation and determination of phenolic compounds" completed in the Institute of Science (FBE) of Istanbul University.Science Citation Index Expande

    No full text
Ozturk, Gizem/0000-0003-0161-1180Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between child and parents' health behaviors and childhood obesity. In addition, an adaptation of the Turkish version of the Family Health Behavior Scale (FHBS) was performed in this study.Design and methods: This is a descriptive and methodological study. The research sample consisted of 358 parents who have a child between the ages of 5 and 12 studying in one of the seven state schools at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary school levels in Istanbul. Data were collected between February 2022 to May 2022 using the Parent and Child Descriptive Information Form, the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity (FNPA) Screening Tool, and the FHBS. IBM SPSS 25.0 (IBM, Armonk, NY, USA) and SPSS AMOS 21.0 software were used to analyze the data. Results: It was found that the confirmatory factor analysis result of FHBS confirmed the original structure of the scale, and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was calculated as 0.80. A positive correlation was found between the parents' total scores of FNPA and FHBS (r:0.511, p < 0.001).Conclusions: It is recommended to evaluate the child and their parents holistically in preventing and managing childhood obesity. School health nurses should plan family-centered interventions to improve health behaviors and carry out these interventions with a multidisciplinary team. Moreover, it has been determined that FHBS is a valid and reliable measurement tool for the Turkish population.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

    No full text
Guven, Koray/0000-0001-8572-1998; Kocabey, Burcu/0000-0002-1339-0445Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of manual spinal manipulation (MSM) and instrumental spinal manipulation (ISM) on the vertebral artery (VA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) in participants with chronic nonspecific neck pain (NNP). Methods: Thirty volunteers aged 20 to 40 years old with NNP over 3 months duration were included. Participants were randomly divided into the following 2 groups: (1) MSM group (n = 15) and (2) ISM group (n = 15). Ipsilateral (intervention side) and contralateral (opposite side of intervention) VAs and ICAs were evaluated using spectral color Doppler ultrasound before and immediately after manipulation. Measurements were recorded by visualizing the ICA carotid sinus (C4 level) and the VA at the V3 segment (C1-C2 level). The blood flow parameters of peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity, resistive index, and volume flow (only for VA) were evaluated. The spinal segment, in which biomechanical aberrant movement was detected by palpation in the upper cervical spine, was manually manipulated in the MSM group. The same methodology was performed for the ISM group using an Activator V instrument (Activator Methods). Results: Intragroup analysis exhibited no statistically significant difference between the MSM and ISM groups in terms of PSV, end-diastolic velocity, resistive index of ipsilateral and contralateral ICA and VA, in addition to volume flow of both VAs preintervention and postintervention (P > .05). Within the intergroup analysis, there was a significant difference in ipsilateral ICA PSV (P = .031) (preintervention vs postintervention difference was -7.9 & PLUSMN; 17.2 cm/s [95% confidence interval, -17.4 to 1.6] in the ISM group and 8.7 & PLUSMN; 22.5 cm/s [95% confidence interval, -3.6 to 21.2]) in the MSM group (P .05). Conclusion: Manual and instrumental spinal manipulations applied to the upper cervical spine in participants with chronic NNP did not appear to alter blood flow parameters of the VAs and ICAs.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

    No full text
Saglam, Rabia/0000-0002-8208-6113OBJECTIVES: Home care that maintains continuity of health care services after cardiac surgery is considered a complementary component of clinical care. We estimated that effective home care given with a multidisciplinary approach would contribute to decreasing symptoms and readmissions to the hospital after cardiac surgery.STUDY DESIGN: This experimental study with a 6-week follow-up period and a 2-group repeated measures design with pretest, posttest, and interval tests was conducted in a public hospital in Turkey in 2016.METHODS: We identified the self-efficacy levels, symptoms, and readmissions to the hospital of 60 patients (30 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group) throughout the data collection process, and we estimated the effect of home care on self-efficacy, symptom management, and hospital readmissions by comparing the data of patients in the experimental and control groups. Each patient in the experimental group received 7 home visits along with 24/7 telephone counseling services throughout the first 6 weeks after discharge, and patients were provided physical care, training, and counseling services during these home visits with the collaboration of their physician.RESULTS: Home care resulted in better self-efficacy and fewer symptoms in the experimental group (P < .05), and it also reduced readmissions to the hospital in the experimental group (23.3%) compared with the control group (46.7%).CONCLUSIONS: This study's findings suggest that home care, with a focus on continuity of care, decreases symptoms and readmissions to the hospital and improves the self-efficacy of patients after cardiac surgery.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde
