    No full text
Ates, Nimet/0000-0003-0417-3059AimThis study investigated the relationship between nurses' critical thinking skills and job performance and whether critical thinking and its subdomains predict job performance. BackgroundIt is expected that nurses may use critical thinking skills to provide evidence-based quality patient care in health care settings. However, there is limited evidence about whether critical thinking is related to job performance among nurses. DesignThis was a descriptive, cross-sectional survey study. MethodsThe study included 368 nurses working in the inpatient wards of a university hospital in Turkey. The survey included a demographic information questionnaire, the Critical Thinking Scale in Clinical Practice for Nurses and the Nurses' Job Performance Scale. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, comparisons, reliability and normality tests, correlation and regression analysis. ResultsParticipating nurses got average scores from the critical thinking and job performance scale and sub-scales, and there was a positive, mid-level and statistically significant correlation between the scale scores. According to the multiple linear regression analysis results, personal critical thinking, interpersonal and self-management critical thinking and the total critical thinking scores positively affected the job performance scores of nurses. ConclusionAs critical thinking predicts nurses' job performance, managers of hospitals and nursing services should consider training programs or activities to increase nurses' essential thinking competencies, thus improving clinical nurses' performances.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

Görüşülen kişilerin %40’ı sağlık hizmeti alabildiğini, %13,8’i gereksinim duyduğunda aile hekimine ulaşabildiğini belirtmiştir. Kronik hastalığı nedeniyle sağlık hizmetine başvuranların %76,5’i devlet hastanesine, %15,3’ü özel sağlık merkezine başvurmuştur. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda kronik hastalık görülme prevalansı literatürde bildirilen oranlardan nispeten düşük saptanmıştır. Suriyeli sığınmacıların kronik hastalıkları nedeniyle neredeyse hiçbir zaman birinci basamak sağlık hizmetlerinden yararlanmadıkları, hizmet ihtiyaçlarını ağırlıklı hastanelerden karşıladıkları görülmektedir. Suriyeli sığınmacıların kronik hastalıklarının yönetiminde birinci basamağının rolünü artıracak ve birinci basamak sağlık hizmetine ulaşımlarını kolaylaştıracak planlamalara ihtiyaç vardır

A Comprehensive and Integrated Hospital Decision Support System for Efficient and Effective Healthcare Services Delivery Using Discrete Event Simulation

    No full text
The difficulty that hospital management has been experiencing over the past decade in balancing demand and capacity needs is unprecedented in the United Kingdom. Due to a shortage of capacity, hospitals cannot treat all patients. We developed a whole hospital-level decision support system to assess and respond to the needs of local populations. We integrated a comparative forecasting approach and discrete event simulation modelling using Hospital Episode Statistics and local datasets. It is clear from the literature that this level of whole hospital simulation model has never been developed before (an innovative decision support system). First, the demands of all hospital specialties were forecasted, and the forecasts were embedded into the simulation model as input. Secondly, a simulation model was developed to capture the patient pathway of all specialties. The model integrates every component of a hospital to aid with efficient and effective use of scarce resources (e.g., staff and beds). As a result, the hospital can meet the increasing demand with its current resources. According to the scenario analysis, the hospital bed occupancy rate will reach the national target (i.e., 85%), and the total hospital revenue will increase by approximately 13%, with a 10% increase in A&E and outpatient and a 20% increase in inpatient demand. In conclusion, the hospital-level simulation model can become a crucial instrument for decision-makers to provide an efficient service for hospitals in England and other parts of the world. © 2023 The Author

Özellikle kamuda belli mevkilere gelmeleri halen imkânsız olan Aleviler açısından Cumhuriyet’in hedeflediği eşit yurttaşlık idealine ilk yüzyılın sonunda ulaşılabilmiş değildir

In this cross-sectional study, which 6332 adults were included, fruit and vegetable consumption, and preferences were collected. The quantities of vegetables and fruits were classified based on the WHO and the national recommendations. Of the adults (33.39 +/- 12.59 years), 52.9% of men and 39.7% of women had an above-normal BMI. Based on WHO recommendations, overweight and obese people consumed less vegetables and fruits compared to their counterparts (ORs for women, overweight: 1.2, obese: 1.3; ORs for men, overweight: 1.3, obese: 1.5; 95% CI). The regression analysis revealed that the quantities of vegetable and fruit intake were higher in young individuals, men, and married people. Although the majority consume more than 400 g/day of vegetables and fruits, the intake is inadequate in people with obesity.Science Citation Index Expande

Ethanolic Extract of Cotinus Coggygria Leaves Attenuates Crystalluria and Kidney Damage in Ethylene Glycol-Induced Urolithiasis in Rats

    No full text
OBJECTIVE: Nephrolithiasis is a common cause of kidney insufficiency. Nephrolithiasis is proven to be the result of various biochemical and inflammatory processes that result in crystal formation and subsequent aggregation. Cotinus coggygria L. (CCog) is a plant extract which has been used as a Turkish remedy for kidney stones. With this study, we planned to evaluate the effects of CCog extract in ethylene glycol (EG)-induced nephrolithiasis model in rats. METHODS: The study group comprised 32 Wistar albino rats which were divided into Control (C), EG, CCog Prophylaxis (CC+EG+CC), and CCog Treatment (EG+CC) groups. Stone formation was induced by adding EG (0.75%) into rat’s drinking water. Normal drinking water was given to Control group for 8 weeks. Throughout the study period of 8 weeks, EG group was given only EG (0.75%) and CC+EG+CC group was given both EG and CCog. In EG+CC group, EG (0.75%) was given for 8 weeks whereas CCog was given for the past 4 weeks. After the 8th week, 24-h urine samples were collected. Rats were then sacrificed and kidney tissue samples were harvested. RESULTS: Metabolites (calcium, citrate) and creatinine in 24 h urine samples were decreased in CC+EG+CC and EG+CC groups. While hyperoxaluria was observed in the EG group, oxalate levels were similar to control levels in the P-CCog and C-CCog groups. The N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase and myeloperoxidase activities were both increased in EG group and these parameters were significantly decreased on CCog treatment. CONCLUSION: We can conclude that C. coggygria extract can have beneficial effect on lowering concentration of stone-forming metabolites in urine and consequently protect renal tissues from damage due to nephrolithiasis. C. coggygria extract can be considered as a potential prophylactic and therapeutic option in high-risk stone formers. Furthermore, our data confirm ethnobotanical use of CC against nephrolithiasis. © 2023 by Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Health.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the homophobia among medical, nursing, pharmacy, and healthcare sciences students and examine the related factors. The study included 2,531 students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health sciences (midwifery, nutrition and dietetics, physiotherapy, management of healthcare facilities) disciplines. Homophobia was measured with the Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale. After getting ethical and institutional approvals, data were collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests. Medical students had the lowest homophobia score, and their mean score was significantly lower than other students. There was a significant difference between students' scores according to years of study, age, sex, acquaintance with LGBTI individuals, providing healthcare services to an LGBTI person, and opinions on providing care. Although homophobia scores of nursing, pharmacy, and other health sciences students were lower than the medical students', policies and expansive content regarding LGBTI should be in place in all health science educational institutes, including medical schools, to prevent students from holding homophobic and prejudicial attitudes against LGBTI individuals.Social Science Citation Inde

Additionally, verteporfin interferes with Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP)/Transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif - TEA domain (TAZ-TEAD) pathway, thus inhibiting the downstream effect of these oncogenes and reducing the malignant properties of GBM. Animal studies have shown verteporfin to be successful in increasing survival rates, which have led to the conduction of phase 1 and 2 clinical trials to further investigate its efficacy in treating GBM. In this article, we aimed to review the novel mechanism of verteporfin's action, the impact of its interaction with YAP/TAZ-TEAD, its effect on glioblastoma stem cells, and its role in inducing ferroptosis.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
