Neuroprotective Effect Of<i> Myrtus</I><i> Communis</I> Against Ionizing Radiation-Induced Brain Injury: Insights From Histopathological and Biochemical Analysis in Rats
Aim: To investigate the potential radioprotective effects of Myrtus communis on brain tissue. Methods: Thirty female rats were divided into four groups. The control group (C) was applied with oral saline solution (SF) for four days. Myrtus communis (MC) groups started to receive MC (100 mg/kg, oral) either four days before (R + preMC) or immediately after (R + MC) irradiation for four days. Irradiation was applied 10 Gy in a single fraction. All rats were sacrificed on the fourth day of irradiation. Malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and glutathione (GSH) levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and tissue factor activities (TFa) were determined for biochemical analysis. Hematoxylin&Eosin &Eosin staining was done for histopathological analyses, and electrophoretic analyses were performed. Results: NO, MDA, and MPO levels were higher in all irradiated groups compared with the C group. MC administration decreased NO, MDA, and MPO levels in R + preMC and R + MC groups. MC administration increased GSH levels. TFa activity decreased in R groups but did not change with MC administration compared to the C group. Radiation-induced brain tissue injury decreased, and morphologically normal neurons were observed in both MC-added groups. Investigation of Physical Parameters Influencing Body Awareness in Adults With Obesity: an Observational, Controlled Study
ERSOZ HUSEYINSINOGLU, BURCU/0000-0002-4694-4440Aim: The primary aim was to compare the body awareness (BA) level in adults with obesity and non-obese adults. The secondary aim was to investigate the physical parameters associated with BA and compare them between adults with obesity and non-obese adults. Method: Thirty-two adults with obesity and age and sex-matched 32 non-obese adults were included in the study. The outcome measures were the Body Awareness Questionnaire, International Physical Activity QuestionnaireShort Form and Functional Reach Test to detect BA, physical activity (PA), and dynamic balance level, respectively. Reaction time was assessed by the Nelson Foot Reaction Test and knee and trunk position error by inclinometer. Results: There was no significant difference between the obese and non-obese group in terms of BA score (p = 0.18) and PA level (p = 0.50). Lower dynamic balance was observed in the obese group (p = 0.003). Only the trunk position error was higher in the obese group in the measurement of joint position error (p = 0.010). There were no significant differences in the right and left feet reaction times between the groups (p = 0.68 and p = 0.23). There were no relationships between BA score and PA level (p = 0.93), dynamic balance (p = 0.82), joint position error (p = 0.14), and right (p = 0.33) and left (p = 0.25) reaction times. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in body awareness between the non-obese and the obese group and there was no association between body awareness and the physical parameters. Türkiye’de Vulvovajinal Kandidiyaz Prevalansı, Risk Faktörleri, Etkenleri ve Laboratuvar Tanısına Dair Sistematik Bir Derleme ve Meta-analizi
Objective: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is the most common superficial mycosis among women, and it is estimated that 75% of women experience at least one in their lifetime, and about 40-50% have a second exposure. This study aims to determine the prevalence, risk factors, etiological factors and laboratory diagnosis of VVC in Türkiye. Methods: In the study, original scientific articles for the reporting of VVC epidemiological features published in English and Turkish languages in national and international databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Turkish Medline) between January 1995 and December 2021 were searched. Electronic databases were searched using various combinations of “vaginal yeast infection”, “vaginal candidiasis”, “vulvovaginal candidiasis Turkey”, “candidal vaginitis”, “Candida vaginitis”, “vaginal candidosis”, “Candida species”, “epidemiology” key terms. Results: The mean prevalence of VVC in adult women was found to be 57.91% in all of the 28 included studies, and 68.21% in the 2-18 age group. Considering the causative distribution, the most common Candida albicans (54.76%), Candida glabrata (24.04%), other Candida species (12.29%), Candida krusei (3.68%), Candida kefyr (3.37%), and Candida tropicalis (2.07%) positivity has been reported. In the included studies, the most common predisposing factors of the patients were pregnancy (35.71%) and diabetes (35.71%). When the articles were examined according to the year they were published and the provinces, it was seen that the prevalence of Candida did not differ significantly (p>0.05). In the studies, VITEK®2 (bioMérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France) automatic identification system (15), Germ tube (7) and CHROMagar (7) diagnostic methods were used to identify strains. As a result of the meta analysis, it was determined that there was a high level of heterogeneity among studies (I2=95.28). Conclusion: As a result of our meta-analysis study, the prevalence of VVC was found to be high in women and children in Turkey. In addition, it was determined that non-albicans species increased in the etiology of VVK. It has been observed that the incidence of C. glabrata species in the etiology of VVC has increased since 1999. Considering that VVK infection increases the susceptibility to other sexually transmitted diseases, as well as the risk of preterm birth and congenital cutaneous candidiasis in pregnant women, it is essential to raise awareness of patients on issues such as treatment follow-up and protection from the disease. © (2024), (Refik Saydam National Public Health Agency (RSNPHA)). Synthesis of New 4-Aminobenzoic Acid (paba) Hydrazide-hydrazone/Sulfonate Hybrids and Antimicrobial Evaluation With Ascorbic Acid/Salicylic Acid/<i>n< Cysteine Combinations

The development of new antibiotics capable of combating drug resistance is critical. In various bacteria and plant species, 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is produced and used as a substrate for folate generation. In this study, a new series of PABA analogs were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Thirteen novel compounds were prepared by linking PABA hydrazide to sulfonate esters via a hydrazone bridge (4a-m). The structures of these compounds were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy as well as by LC-MS. Following structural characterization, all compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Enterococcus faecium (ATCC 19434), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) strains. Four compounds were found to have moderate antimicrobial activity against the P. aeruginosa strain. These compounds, including 4e, 4f, 4g, and 4m, containing a hydrazide-hydrazone sulfonate functionality, showed the best MIC value of 64 mu g/mL. In addition, synergistic effects of ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) with synthesized compounds were also investigated. It was observed that the combination of compounds 4f and 4g with NAC showed antipseudomonal activity with MIC values of 32 mu g/mL and 16 mu g/mL, respectively, against the P. aeuriginosa strain. The antimicrobial activity of 4f and 4g was enhanced by two folds in combination with NAC. Our findings in this study can be crucial for the development of new potent antimicrobial agents. Determination of Chemical Composition and Antioxidant, Cytotoxic, Antimicrobial, and Enzyme Inhibition Activities of <i>rumex Acetosella</I> L. Plant Extract
Alma, Mehmet Hakki/0000-0001-6323-7230; Keskin, Cumali/0000-0003-3758-0654Purpose The phenolic composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial activity, enzyme inhibition activity, and cytotoxic activity potentials of the plant Rumex acetosella L. (R. acetosella) were examined in this study. Materials and Methods: The chemical composition of R. acetosella methanol extract was identified by the LC-MS/MS method. The antioxidant activity was tested using beta-carotene/linoleic acid, DPPH free radical scavenging, ABTS cation radical scavenging, CUPRAC reducing power, and metal chelating activity methods. The cytotoxic activity was determined by the MTT assay using human ovarian adenocarcinoma (Skov-3), glioblastoma (U87), human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2) cell lines. The antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts was tested on gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeuriginosa) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) using the in vitro minimum inhibition concentration method (MIC). Enzyme inhibition activity of R. acetosella methanol extract was measured spectrophotometrically against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes. Results: The findings showed that the major components of the methanol extract content were luteolin-7-O-glucoside (1.599 m/L), polydatin (91,024 m/L), and shikimic acid (0.773 m/L). It was determined that the extract and standard antioxidant (a-tocopherol) results in DPPH center dot, and ABTS center dot + tests performed to determine the antioxidant activity were close to each other, and this value was more effective than the standard antioxidant (alpha-tocopherol) in the CUPRAC test. These results suggested that the plant's antioxidant potential was higher when compared with reference antioxidant compounds. It was determined that the methanol extract of R. acetosella had a weaker effect on the growth of the tested microorganisms than the antibiotics used as standard. The activity of the GST and AChE enzymes was found to be severely inhibited by the methanol extract of R. acetosella. Kayıptan Sonra Doğan Çocuk Olmak: Nitel Bir Araştırma
Çocuk kaybı insanın deneyimlenebileceği en ağır travmatik deneyimlerden biridir. Çocuk kaybı yaşayan ebeveynler yas süreçleri tamamladıktan sonra veya tamamlamadan dünyaya yeniden bir çocuk getirebilirler. Kaybın ardından dünyaya gelen çocuklar kayıptan sonraki çocuk olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Kayıp gerçeği ve yaslı ebeveynin tutumları kayıp sonrasında doğan çocuğun kimliğini ve ruhsal durumunu etkilemektedir. Bu araştırmada kayıp sonrasında doğan çocukların yaşam deneyimlerini derinlemesine anlamak üzere nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanıldı. Belirlenen araştırma yöntemi doğrultusunda kayıp sonrasında dünyaya gelen on katılımcı ile yarı-yapılandırılmış bireysel görüşme gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmada elde edilen veriler tematik analiz ile incelendi. Tematik analizin sonucunda “kayıp çocuğa dair”, “kayıptan sonra doğmanın yaşama etkisi”, “kayıp sonrasında doğan çocuk olmak” ve “yas” ana temaları belirlendi. “Kayıp çocuğa dair” ana temasında ölen kardeş ile ilgili bilgiler, eşya ve fotoğraflar, ölüm nedeni ve şeklini öğrenme, kardeş ile ilgili imge ve fanteziler, duygular ve temas ihtiyaçları yer almaktadır. “Kayıptan sonra doğmanın yaşama etkisi” ana teması altında kayıp sonrasında doğmanın bireylerin hem kimlik ve ruhsal gelişimlerine hem de meslek seçimlerine etkisi ve ebeveynlerinin tutumları bulgulandı. “Kayıp sonrasında doğan çocuk olmak” ana temasında bireylerin günah keçisi, teselli çocuk ya da armağan çocuk ile ilgili ifadeleri yer aldı. Son ana tema olan “yas”ta ise, katılımcılar ebeveynlerinin yası, kendi yasları ve bu yas ile baş etme deneyimleri ile ilgili bilgiler verdiler. Kayıp sonrasında dünyaya gelmek bireylerin kimlik, ruhsal durum ve meslek seçimine etki etmekte; bireyleri olumsuz ebeveyn tutumları ile karşı karşıya bırakabilmektedir. Çocuk kaybı olan ebeveynlerin yas süreçlerinin izlenmesi ve yeni çocuk sahibi olma süreçlerine rehberlik edilmesi önerilebilir

Monkeypox Post-Covid Knowledge, Worrying, and Vaccine Adoption in the Arabic General Population

There have been 60,000 cases reported worldwide, most of which are in places where monkeypox has never been seen due to the travel of people who have the virus. This research aims to evaluate the general Arabic population in regard to the monkeypox disease, fears, and vaccine adoption after the WHO proclaimed a monkeypox epidemic and to compare these attitudes to those of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in some Arabic countries (Syria, Egypt, Qatar, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan, Algeria, and Iraq) between 18 August and 7 September 2022. The inclusion criteria were the general public residing in Arabic nations and being older than 18. This questionnaire has 32 questions separated into three sections: sociodemographic variables, prior COVID-19 exposure, and COVID-19 vaccination history. The second portion assesses the knowledge and anxieties about monkeypox, while the third section includes the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD7) scale. Logistic regression analyses were performed to compute the adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and their confidence intervals (95%CI) using STATA (version 17.0). Results: A total of 3665 respondents from 17 Arabic countries were involved in this study. Almost two-thirds (n = 2427, 66.2%) of the participants expressed more worry about COVID-19 than monkeypox diseases. Regarding the major cause for concern about monkeypox, 39.5% of participants attributed their anxiety to the fear that they or a member of their family may contract the illness, while 38.4% were concerned about monkeypox becoming another worldwide pandemic. According to the GAD 7 score, 71.7% of the respondents showed very low anxiety toward monkeypox and 43.8% of the participants scored poor levels of knowledge about monkeypox disease. Participants with previous COVID-19 infection showed a 1.206 times greater acceptance to receive the monkeypox vaccine than those with no previous infection. A 3.097 times higher concern for monkeypox than COVID-19 was shown by the participants who perceived monkeypox as dangerous and virulent than those who did not. Participants who have a chronic disease (aOR: 1.32; 95%CI: 1.09-1.60); participants worried about monkeypox (aOR: 1.21; 95%CI: 1.04-1.40), and perceived monkeypox as a dangerous and virulent disease (aOR: 2.25; 95%CI: 1.92-2.65); and excellent knowledge level (aOR: 2.28; 95%CI: 1.79-2.90) have emerged as significant predictors. Conclusions: Our study reported that three-fourths of the participants were more concerned about COVID-19 than monkeypox disease. In addition, most of the participants have inadequate levels of knowledge regarding monkeypox disease. Hence, immediate action should be taken to address this problem. Consequently, learning about monkeypox and spreading information about its prevention is crucial.Science Citation Index Expande
Molecular Epidemiology of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii Isolates in Turkiye: Systematic Review

This study aims to discuss the molecular epidemiology of CRAB isolates in Turkiye in the last 12 years and the prevalence of gene regions associated with resistance or pathogenesis using a systematic review method. Our study consists of a literature search, determination of eligibility and exclusion criteria, qualitative analysis of studies, data extraction, and statistical analysis. All studies were analyzed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Guidelines. The incidence rates of blaOXA-23, blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-24/40, blaOXA-24/40-like, blaOXA-51, blaOXA-51-like, blaOXA-58, and blaOXA-58-like genes in CRAB strains were 76.4%, 68.6%, 1.2%, 3.4%, 97.0%, 98.6%, 8.4%, and 17.1%, respectively. It was determined that the prevalence of the blaOXA-23 and blaOXA-58 gene regions showed a statistically significant change over the years. Due to the high prevalence of A. baumannii strains carrying the blaOXA-23 variant, it is necessary to follow its geographical distribution and transposon and plasmid movements. Based on available data, molecular surveillance of CRAB strains should be standardized. In addition, sterilization and disinfection processes applied within the scope of an effective struggle against CRAB strains that can remain live on surfaces for a long time should be reviewed frequently.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
