    The advent of 3D medical imaging has been a turning point in the diagnosis of various diseases, as voxel information from adjacent slices helps radiologists better understand complex anatomical relationships. However, the interpretation of medical images by radiologists with different levels of expertise can vary and is also time-consuming. In the last decades, artificial intelligence-based computer-aided systems have provided fast and more reliable diagnostic insights with great potential for various clinical purposes. This paper proposes a significant deep learning based 3D medical image diagnosis method. The method classifies MedMNIST3D, which consists of six 3D biomedical datasets obtained from CT, MRA, and electron microscopy modalities. The proposed method concatenates 3D image features extracted from three independent networks, a 3D CNN, and two time-distributed ResNet BLSTM structures. The ultimate discriminative features are selected via the minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) feature selection method. Those features are then classified by a neural network model. Experiments adhere to the rules of the official splits and evaluation metrics of the MedMNIST3D datasets. The results reveal that the proposed approach outperforms similar studies in terms of accuracy and AUC.Science Citation Index Expande

    Functional Groups Matter: Metabolomics Analysis of <i>escherichia Coli</I> Exposed To Trans-Cinnamic Acid and Its Derivatives Unveils Common and Unique Targets

Trans-cinnamic acid (t-CA) and its derivatives, such as p-coumaric acid (p-CA) and ferulic acid (FA) have been shown to have antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. However, there is limited information available concerning the antibacterial mode of action of these phenolic acids. In this study, we aimed to ascertain metabolic alterations associated with exposure to t-CA, p-CA, and FA in Escherichia coli BW25113 using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics approach. The results showed that t-CA, p-CA, and FA treatments led to significant changes (p < 0.05) in the concentration of 42, 55, and 74% of the identified metabolites in E. coli, respectively. Partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) revealed a clear separation between control and phenolic acid groups with regard to metabolic response. Moreover, it was found that FA and p-CA treatment groups were clustered closely together but separated from the t-CA treatment group. Arginine, putrescine, cadaverine, galactose, and sucrose had the greatest impact on group differentiation. Quantitative pathway analysis demonstrated that arginine and proline, pyrimidine, glutathione, and galactose metabolisms, as well as aminoacyl-tRNA and arginine biosyntheses, were markedly affected by all phenolic acids. Finally, the H2O2 content of E. coli cells was significantly increased in response to t-CA and p-CA whereas all phenolic acids caused a dramatic increase in the number of apurinic/apyrimidinic sites. Overall, this study suggests that the metabolic response of E. coli cells to t-CA is relatively different from that to p-CA and FA.     Social Loneliness and Perceived Stress Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults During the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Akman Ozdemir, Petek/0000-0001-7797-0353Older age has been considered a risk factor for physical and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet many middle-aged and older adults showed resilience. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the protective factors against social loneliness and perceived stress among Turkish middle-aged and older adults. The data were collected from 464 adults aged 55 and above when the curfew restrictions were still in place. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that resilience, life satisfaction, self-esteem, satisfaction with social support and internet use negatively predicted both social loneliness and stress. The extent of curfew measures, which were more restrictive for the elderly, did not predict social loneliness and stress. The participants living alone showed higher social loneliness and those with chronic disease reported more stress. Results highlight the significant role of protective factors in enhancing well-being and coping in old age under highly stressful situations such as the pandemic.Social Science Citation Inde

    The Validity and Reliability of the Thanatophobia Scale-Turkish Form: a Psychometric Study Among Nurses

    Purpose: To examine the validity and reliability of the Thanatophobia Scale-Turkish Form among nurses. Design and methods: This methodological study included 154 nurses. Content and construct validity, item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and internal consistency were used to evaluate the data. Findings: The content validity index of the scale was 0.91. Item-total score correlation values varied between 0.453 and 0.718. As a result of the confirmatory factor analyses, one factor was confirmed. Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficient was 0.854. Practice Implications: Thanatophobia Scale-Turkish Form is a valid and reliable tool used to evaluate the fear of death among nurses.Social Science Citation Inde

    Çocukluk Dönemine Hizmet Veren Öğretmenlerin İlk Yardım Öz Yeterliklerinin Değerlendirilmesi

    Amaç: Bu çalışmada çocukluk dönemine hizmet veren öğretmenlerin ilk yardım öz yeterlik düzeyleri ve bunu etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma verileri 139 öğretmenden Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu ve İlk Yardım Öz Yeterlik Ölçeği aracılığı ile toplandı. Bulgular: Öğretmenlerin ölçek toplam puan ortalaması 128.338 ± 43.870 olarak belirlendi. Erkeklerin temel ilk yardım özyeterliği puanları (x=50.947), kadınların temel ilk yardım özyeterliği puanlarından (x=44.564) yüksek bulundu (t=2.488; p=0.014<0.05; d=0.474; η2=0.043). Öğretmenlerin ilk yardım eğitimi almış olması, ilk yardım öz yeterlik düzeyini arttırmaktaydı (ß=0.265). Öğretmenlerin ilk yardımcı kimliğine sahip olması, ilk yardım öz yeterlik düzeyini arttırmaktaydı (ß=0.214). Öğretmenlerin ilk yardım bilgisi konusunda kendini yeterli görmesi, ilk yardım öz yeterlik düzeyini arttırmaktaydı (ß=0.165). Sonuç: Öğretmen yetiştirme programlarında teorik ve uygulamalı ilk yardım eğitimlerinin birlikte verilmesi, eğitimin uygulama basamağında kadın öğretmenlerin cesaretlendirilmesi, eğitimlerin sağlık bakanlığı tarafından onaylı güvenilir eğitmenler tarafından verilmesi, çocuklara hizmet verecek öğretmen adaylarına, sağlık bakanlığı onaylı ilk yardımcı kimliği alabileceği eğitim imkanlarının sağlanabilmesi, bu eğitimler sırasında ilk yardım bilgisine ek olarak, ilk yardım öz yeterlik düzeylerinin de geçerliği yapılmış ölçüm araçlarıyla değerlendirilmesi önerilmektedir

    AYDIN, GAMZE/0000-0002-4952-2825Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the physical performance, balance, gait and activities of daily living (ADL) of older individuals with long COVID syndrome (LCS). Methods: A total of 124 individuals (49% women) with a mean age of 71.8 +/- 5.8 years were included in the study. Participants were divided into two groups, older individuals with LCS in the LCS group and older individuals who were not diagnosed with COVID-19 in the CON (control) group. Physical performance of participants was evaluated with the Alusti Test, balance and gait assessment was evaluated with the Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment (TBGA), and ADL were evaluated with the Barthel Index (BI). Results: In the evaluations between groups, the mean score of active muscular mobility of right and left upper extremities, transfer supine position to sitting, trunk in sitting position and standing, which are among the subparameters of the Alusti Test, were statistically significantly lower in LCS compared to CON (p .05). Conclusions: It was concluded that physical performance parameters related to active muscular mobility of the upper extremity, transfer supine position to sitting, trunk in sitting position and walking in LCS were negatively affected by the disease, but this did not affect the level of balance and independence in ADL.Science Citation Index Expanded - Social Science Citation Inde

    Tinea Capitis (favus) in a 8-Year Child: Case Report

Additionally, fungal infection of the scalp, known as tinea capitis, is considered a chronic condition and if left untreated, it can lead to alopecia (hair loss) and permanent scarring.AbstractTinea capitis (TC) is a common cutaneous fungal infection in childhood. In this report, we describe the case of an 8-year-old child presenting with erythematous scalp lesions accompanied by hair loss. Upon examination, palpation revealed a swollen and tender left parotid gland. Notably, the frontal region of the scalp exhibited erythematous lesions and scaly red plaques resembling yellowish paste-like dough. Subsequent clinical evaluation and culture analysis confirmed the diagnosis of TC. The patient received treatment with Terbinafine 125 mg for a duration of 8 weeks. Follow-up examinations conducted after 3 months showed no signs of recurrence. Accurate diagnosis and timely treatment, along with adherence to medication regimens, are crucial in cases of TC, and differential diagnoses should be considered. Treatment should commence promptly upon diagnosis to prevent complications such as scalp baldness and transmission to others. This case report underscores the significance of establishing a precise diagnosis and effective treatment for this dermatophytosis to mitigate the risk of recurrences or therapeutic shortcomings, particularly in infants.We would like to thank the parents of the patient for their cooperation.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

    Effects of Computer-Based Balance Exercises on Balance, Pain, Clinical Presentation and Nerve Function in Patients With Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: a Randomized Controlled Study

    Objective:To evaluate the use of a computer-based biodex balance exercise system (BBS) on balance, neuropathic pain, clinical presentation and nerve function in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods: A total of 32 participants with DPN were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to an intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG performed exercises using the BBS twice weekly for 8 weeks, while CG were informed regarding diabetes self-management. At baseline and after study completion, participants underwent balance (postural stability and fall risk) and neuropathic pain assessment (DN4 questionnaire) and were screened using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and nerve conduction test. Results: Among the baseline participants, 14 in the IG and 13 in the CG completed the study. Balance training improved postural stability (overall, p<0.001), fall risk (p<0.001), neuropathic pain (p=0.01) and symptoms (p<0.001), and clinical presentation (p=0.02), but not nerve function, within the IG. At follow-up, IG displayed significantly improved stability (p<0.001) and fall risk (p=0.02) and decreased neuropathic symptoms (p=0.01) compared to the CG. Conclusion: Computer-based balance exercises improve balance, pain, and clinical presentation of DPN, but not nerve function, in patients with DPN.     A Guide To Facilitate the Creation of a Femoral Tunnel for Arthroscopic Ligamentum Teres Reconstruction: a Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography Study

We aimed to quantitatively determine the entry site and define the angular orientation of the ideal femoral tunnel with its relevance to the femoral valgus angle (FVA) and the femoral anteversion angle (FAA) to facilitate the creation of an ideal femoral tunnel during the LT reconstruction surgery. A total of 60 randomly selected CT images were obtained to reconstruct three-dimensional femur models. A virtual reamer representing the ideal femoral tunnel was placed in the femur models. The femur length, FVA, FAA, the femoral tunnel anterior angle, the femoral tunnel superior angle and the skin- and bony-entry sites were measured. The femoral tunnel angular orientation was strongly correlated with the FVA and the FAA. Mathematical formulas were defined by which entry site of the reamer and the anterior and superior angulation of the femoral tunnel could be estimated before the surgery. The mean skin-entry site was 67.3 mm distal and 0.1 mm anterior to the centre of the greater trochanter's superior border. The angular orientation of the femoral tunnel using FVA and FAA can be easily estimated using mathematical formulas before LT reconstruction surgery. The entry site and angular orientation of the femoral tunnel described in this study can be used to reduce dependency on the usage of fluoroscopy and the workload on the surgeon during the LT reconstruction surgery.None declared.None declared.Science Citation Index Expande
