Nurse Unemployment in the Country Which Has Nursing Shortage: Investigation of the Reasons in the Aspect of Nurses
Turkey is the country which has serious nursing shortage. However, still there are many nurses unemployed and looking for an appropriate job. Therefore, this descriptive study aimed to examine unemployment reasons among nurses in Turkey. The study collected data from 266 unemployed nurses through an online questionnaire included demographic, socioeconomic, professional, and working characteristics, job expectations, and reasons for unemployment. Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis. The study findings revealed that the nurses thought they were unemployed due to a lack of information exchange between educational institutions and health labor markets, low wages, and intense workload. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
Determination of the Factors Affecting the Health and Social Lives of Individuals With Type I Diabetes During the Covid-19 Pandemic Process: a Qualitative Study
Aim: This study was carried out to determine the factors affecting the health and social lives of individuals with Type I diabetes. Materials and Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 14 individuals with Type I diabetes living in Istanbul province. The quantitative data of the study were collected using a personal information form, and the qualitative data were collected through two open-ended questions. Results: Content analysis was used to evaluate qualitative data. The mean age of the individuals with Type I diabetes was 36.1% (n=14) years. As a result of the content analysis, two main themes and eight sub-themes were determined. Accordingly, the themes were negative emotions towards the illness and fear of being unable to maintain health during the pandemic process. Conclusion: In this study, individuals with Type I diabetes were found to have negative thoughts and to experience anxiety and fear about their health due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic process, they were particularly affected by the inability to exercise enough and the deprivation of social life. In line with these results, the study revealed that the mental and physical needs of individuals with Type I diabetes, which is a disadvantaged group during the pandemic process. In these cases, it is recommended to develop teams that will provide support for remote chronic disease monitoring of individuals with type 1 diabetes, to train health professionals, to provide multidisciplinary support to individuals by investing in these issues, and to create emergency action plans that include all elements
Carvacrol Improves Cognitive Dysfunction by Decreasing Amyloid-Β Accumulation and Regulating Neuroinflammation in Ovariectomized Renovascular Hypertensive Rats
Hypertension contributes to both the development and progression of brain damage and cognitive dysfunction in the postmenopausal period in women. Carvacrol (CAR), which can easily cross the blood-brain barrier, exhibits neuroprotective properties due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. In the present study, we have examined the effect of CAR treatment on learning-memory impairment in a post-menopausal hypertensive rat model that was induced by ovariectomy following two-kidney, one-clip renovascular hypertension surgery. From the third week after the establishment of renovascular hypertension in ovariectomized rats, CAR (40 mg/kg) was administered once daily for consecutive 7 weeks by gastric gavage. Systolic blood pressure was estimated by the tail-cuff method once a week. At the end of the study, cognitive functions were evaluated with behavioral tests and also neurochemical changes were measured in serum, cortex, and hippocampus by ELISA test. Blood pressure was decreased with CAR treatment in hypertensive rats. Serum estrogen levels decreased in ovariectomized rats and did not change with CAR treatment. CAR demonstrated beneficial effects on learning and memory tests as determined by increased recognition index, the number of platforms crossed, and time spent in the target quadrant. Due to CAR treatment, there was a marked reduction in the hippocampal and cortex amyloid-beta, osteopontin, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels, and acetylcholinesterase activity, while an increment in neprilysin and interleukin-10 levels was found. The Effect of <i>myrtus Communis</I> L. Extract on Nephrolithiasis Model in Rats
OBJECTIVE: Nephrolithiasis is a common urological disease that can lead to renal failure. Oxidative stress has been shown to be a contributing factor for nephrolithiasis and many agents have been studied to prevent and treat oxidative stress-related nephrolithiasis and renal damage. Myrtus communis (MC) extract has been shown to be an important antioxidant in different animal models. In this study, MC extract was administered preventively or therapeutically to rats with kidney stones, and its effectiveness was investigated. METHODS: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (n=8); control (C), ethylene glycol (EG), EG+preventive MC, and EG+curative MC groups. The nephrolithiasis model was created by adding 0.75% EG to drinking water for 8 weeks. Ultimately, 24-hour urine was collected to measure calcium, citrate, and creatinine levels. After decapitation, kidney tissues were harvested for histological analyses, measurement of osteopontin and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels, and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and caspase-3 activities. RESULTS: In 24-hour urine samples, calcium, citrate and creatinine levels were decreased in the EG group, while oxalate levels were increased and in treatment groups these parameters returned to control levels. MPO, 8-OHdG, caspase-3 and NAG activity were significantly increased in tissue and these changes were reversed in both MC groups. Histological findings also supported the biochemical parameters. CONCLUSION: MC can reduce oxidative stress and histopathological changes in kidney tissues in rat nephrolithiasis model when used as either a preventive or therapeutic agent. Comparative Cross-Sectional Study on Sexual Function of Couples During Pregnancy: Assisted Reproductive Techniques Versus Spontaneous Conceptions

A total of 102 couples participated in this cross-sectional study, with 68 couples in the spontaneous conception group and 34 couples in the ART group. Data collection was conducted face-to-face in the antenatal clinic using separate "Descriptive Information Form" for women and men, "Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI)" for women, and "Libido Scoring System (LSS)" for men. Descriptive statistical methods, Chi-square and Fisher exact tests, t-test, and Pearson correlation test were used for data analysis. It was observed that the mean FSFI total scores of women who conceived spontaneously and through ART during pregnancy were at a good level (>= 30), while the mean LSS scores of their partners were at a moderate level (5-7). No statistically significant distinction existed among the groups. Further research is advisable by adjusting the sample selection criteria, such as gravida, duration of ART treatment, and gestational age.Social Science Citation Inde
The Potential Role of Boron in the Modulation of Gut Microbiota Composition: an in Vivo Pilot Study
Sahin, Eray/0000-0002-0873-2439Background/Objectives: The role of the gut microbiome in the development and progression of many diseases has received increased attention in recent years. Boron, a trace mineral found in dietary sources, has attracted interest due to its unique electron depletion and coordination characteristics in chemistry, as well as its potential role in modulating the gut microbiota. This study investigates the effects of inorganic boron derivatives on the gut microbiota of mice. Methods: For three weeks, boric acid (BA), sodium pentaborate pentahydrate (NaB), and sodium perborate tetrahydrate (SPT) were dissolved (200 mg/kg each) in drinking water and administered to wild-type BALB/c mice. The composition of the gut microbiota was analyzed to determine the impact of these treatments. Results: The administration of BA significantly altered the composition of the gut microbiota, resulting in a rise in advantageous species such as Barnesiella and Alistipes. Additionally, there was a decrease in some taxa associated with inflammation and illness, such as Clostridium XIVb and Bilophila. Notable increases in genera like Treponema and Catellicoccus were observed, suggesting the potential of boron compounds to enrich microbial communities with unique metabolic functions. Conclusions: These findings indicate that boron compounds may have the potential to influence gut microbiota composition positively, offering potential prebiotic effects. Relationship Between Visceral Adiposity Index and Glycemic and Metabolic Control in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
OZKAYA, Volkan/0000-0001-7576-2083BackgroundVisceral Adiposity Index (VAI) is a gender-specific mathematical model based on BMI, waist circumference (WC) and lipid parameters. No study has yet examined the relationship between this index and the glycemic and metabolic parameters in children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The current study aims at examining the relationship between glycemic and metabolic control and VAI in children and adolescents with Type 1 DM.MethodsA total of 150 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years with Type 1 DM were included in this study. Anthropometric, glycemic and metabolic parameters were examined. VAI was calculated using gender-specific formulas. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS version 23.ResultsThe average age of the participants was 12.2 +/- 3.1 years (females 53.0%). The females had higher rates of VAI, microalbuminuria and hypertension than males. Participants of both gender with higher VAI quartiles had higher anthropometric measurements, insulin usage, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides and urine microalbumin and had poor glycemic control. Sex adjusted correlation analysis showed that VAI is negatively correlated with estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), and positively correlated with insulin dose, LDL-C, triglycerides, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and microalbuminuria.ConclusionThe present paper is the first study examining the relationship between Type 1 DM and VAI. Higher VAI values in children and adolescents with type 1 DM may adversely affect glycemic and metabolic control. VAI can be a useful and new method in evaluating glycemic and metabolic control in children and adolescents with Type 1 DM.Science Citation Index Expande
Synthesis of Novel Triazole-Urea Hybrids and Their Antiproliferative Activity Against Pancreatic Cancer Through Suppression of Eef2k and Induction of Apoptosis
ARMAGAN, GULIZ/0000-0001-6466-2263; Cevik, Ozge/0000-0002-9325-3757; Erdogan, Mumin/0000-0003-0048-444XPancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers with its highly aggressive and metastatic character and there is a huge unmet need for new drugs treating pancreatic cancer. In the present study, a series of 1,2,4-triazole-urea conjugates have been designed and synthesized as novel candidates of antiproliferative agents against pancreatic cancer cells. Among them, compounds 33, 34, 35 and 38 possesing IC50 values between 0.231 and 0.488 mu M against PANC-1 cells demonstrated the highest anti-proliferative activity. These compounds presenting the highest antiproliferative activity were evaluated for further biological studies. The same four compounds inhibited colony formation in pancreatic cancer cells dose dependently. Western blot study on the selected compounds showed that compounds 33 and 38 significantly reduced eEF2K protein levels in cancer cells. These compounds displayed an effective eEF2K activity suppression by down-regulated levels of unphosphorylated eEF2 in PANC-1 cells. Compounds 33, 34, 35 and 38 were also demonstrated to induce apoptosis and activate caspase 3/7. In silico studies were performed to predict the druggability and ADMET/ properties of the active molecules. In summary, 1,2,4-triazole-urea conjugates developed in this study represent a novel and promising lead structure with anticancer activity against pancreatic cancer achieved through eEF2K activity suppression. Tracing Ideologies, Influences, and Politics: the Shaping of a State Monopoly in Turkey's Sports System (1920s-1990s)

This article analyzes the ideologies, influences, and politics that have shaped this state monopoly over the sports system across three phases from the 1920s to the 1990s: establishment, stabilization, and instrumentalization. The establishment phase aimed to align sports with nation-building ideals, incorporating nationalist ideology and paramilitarism. The stabilization phase embraced a statist approach influenced by socio-economic conditions and Soviet influence.
