    No full text
SELCUK, Halit/0000-0003-2760-4130Introduction Evidence exists on clinical benefits of synchronous and asynchronous telerehabilitation for patients with non-specific neck pain (NSNP); however, limited studies are comparing synchronous and asynchronous telerehabilitation (TR) programs in this population. The aim of this study was to estimate the relative effectiveness of an 8-week synchronous or asynchronous TR in improving pain, functional disability, kinesiophobia, and mobility in patients with NSNP.Materials and methods This was a randomized, controlled clinical trial carried out on 60 individuals with NSNP. Participants were randomly assigned to synchronous TR group (n = 30) or asynchronous TR group (n = 30) that received the same exercise program for 8 weeks. Pain measured by Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), disability measured by Neck Disability Index (NDI), kinesiophobia measured by Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), and cervical range of motion were used as outcome measures. Assessments were performed at baseline, 4th week, 8th week, and 16th week. Results The analysis showed a significant effect of time and significant interaction between group and time in NPRS, NDI, TSK, and cervical mobility scores (p 0.05). There were no significant differences between the groups at all time points (p > 0.05) except for cervical right lateral flexion at 8th week (p = 0.036).Conclusion Telerehabilitation technologies are expanding at a rapid rate, and it is essential to understand the outcomes produced using these technologies in health conditions. This study showed that synchronous and asynchronous telerehabilitation produces similar results in patients with NSNP, supporting that either method can be used interchangeably.Science Citation Index Expande

Anahtar Kelimeler: Anksiyete, kemoterapi, sanal gerçeklik, tedaviye uyumThe study was conducted in a randomized controlled manner to evaluate the effects of virtual reality glasses used on anxiety and treatment compliance in cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy. A total of 30 patients, including 15 experimental and 15 control groups, who received intravenous chemotherapy treatment every 21 days between April 1 and September 31, 2023, in an outpatient chemotherapy unit at a research hospital, constituted the sample of the study. Research data were collected using the Patient Information Form, Beck Anxiety Scale (BAI), and Chronic Disease Adaptation Scale (CHIS). In evaluating the data, differences between the rates of categorical variables in independent groups were analyzed with Chi-Square tests. The t-test was used to compare quantitative continuous data between two independent groups. Dependent groups t-test was used to compare measurements within groups. After giving information about the research, a pre-test was administered to patients in both groups. Patients in the experimental group were shown 3 different videos with virtual reality glasses during 3 cycles of chemotherapy treatment, and a posttest was administered to both groups at the end of the 3rd cycle. Anxiety post-test measurements of the patients showed a significant difference according to the group (t(28)=3.132; p=0.004<0.05). Anxiety post-test measurements in the control group (x̄=12.067) were found to be higher than anxiety post-test measurements in the experimental group (x̄=6.667). Total post-test measurements of patients' adaptation to chronic diseases showed a significant difference according to group (t(28)=-3.687; p=0.001<0.05). Total post-test measurements of adaptation to chronic diseases in the experimental group (x̄=98.400) were found to be higher than total post-test measurements of adaptation to chronic diseases in the control group (x̄=87.067). It was found that virtual reality glasses used in cancer patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy reduced anxiety and increased compliance with treatment. Ozsoy Ozbay, Ayse Elif/0000-0001-5397-398XIn this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between single-building scaled urban regeneration, driven by the Disaster Risk Transformation Law, and urban segregation in Maltepe district. Following stricter building codes, the district underwent significant demolition and construction between 2014 and 2015. We employ construction data and credit card transaction data to analyze the demographic changes. We find that urban regeneration due to building renewal may have diverse context-dependent effects on the demographic tapestry of communities, their culture and history. While some neighborhoods showed positive response to increased local amenities and resulted in reduced mobility outside their local area, leading to greater income segregation from the rest of the city, others behaved in the opposite direction. Similarly, the transformation process has attracted a more educated and higher-income inflow of residents in some neighborhoods compared to others. Herein, we employ new big data and mobility-driven metrics from computational social science such as diversity, loyalty and assortativity to reveal the link between urban regeneration and segregation. Our findings provide important clues and insights to urban planners for developing urban policies leading to neighborhood designs that are more connected to each other (hence reducing segregation) while still offering modern amenities expected by their residents. We would like to thank Esin Ko d ymen, the then President of the Chamber of Architects in Istanbul for valuable information and com-ments about urban settlements and transformation in Maltepe. We also wish to thank Maltepe Municipality for their support in sharing the data concerning building renewal and demolition in Maltepe district. Finally, we thank the commercial bank, who wishes to remain anonymous, that shared the credit card transaction database for the purposes of this study.Social Science Citation Inde

The Effect of Vitamin D and Paricalcitol on Protein Disulfide Isomerase

    No full text
Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), a multifunctional protein plays an important role as oxidoreductase, isomerase and chaperone in the cell. Prior studies have identified PDI is highly expressed in many different cancer types and presented as a new potential target for cancer treatment. Here, we investigated vitamin D and its analogue paricalcitol in silico interaction of the human PDI and inhibition of PDI reductase activity in vitro. We observed a non-covalent mechanism where the main skeleton of the vitamin D3 and paricalcitol structure is located at the hydrophobic site in the b' domain of PDI and forms a hydrogen bond with a residue (His138) in this domain. They also form multiple weak hydrophobic interactions with various chemical groups of the b' subunit. For the first time, we demonstrate that 1,25dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1 alpha,25(OH)2 vitamin D3) and paricalcitol inhibit the PDI reductase activity in vitro and their IC50 values are 20.79 +/- 1.43 nmol/L and 32.82 +/- 3.15 nmol/L respectively. The two compounds can also block the denitrosation activity of PDI.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Effects of Balance and Strength Training for Ankle Proprioception in People With Chronic Ankle Instability: a Randomized Controlled Study

    No full text
Background: After an ankle sprain, the ligament and joint capsule are damaged, and as a result, proprioceptive sense is damaged, causing a feeling of giving away in the ankle and resulting in recurrent sprains. Given the relevant studies, it has been seen that people with chronic ankle instability (CAI) commonly have deficits in joint position sense and reinjury risks. Joint position sense plays an important role in ankle control, thereby reducing the risk of injury. Therefore, this study aims to compare the effects of balance and strength training on ankle proprioception in people with CAI. Methods: This single-blind randomized controlled study included 29 volunteer participants (21 women and eight men) aged 18 to 30 years. Participants with a Cumberland ankle instability scale score less than or equal to 24 were randomly divided into two treatment groups: strength training (n = 14) and balance training (n = 15). Y balance test, joint position, and vibration sense were evaluated at the beginning and end of the treatment. "Hop to stabilization" exercises were applied to the balance group and resistive bands exercises to the strength group, which were performed for 6 weeks, 35 minutes per day, two times per week. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in the anterior, posterolateral, and posteromedial directions of the Y balance test (P = .89, P = .50, and P = .34, respectively), but the strength training group showed significant improvement in ankle proprioception (140 degrees) and vibration sense (fifth finger) (P < .001), and the post hoc Cohen's d effect size values were medium (.52) and small (.25), respectively. Conclusions: The findings of this study show that strengthening and balance exercises have similar effects on dynamic balance, but strengthening exercises are more effective in improving joint position and vibration sense. Given the positive effects of both exercise programs, it is recommended to implement the two interventions separately or together for CAI rehabilitation.Science Citation Index Expande

    Intergenerational Transmission of Financial Biases

    No full text
The aim of this study is to test the intergenerational transmission of frequently observed financial biases. We elicited financial biases of first -year university students and their parents. Results indicate the intergenerational transmission of illusion of control, loss -aversion, and overconfidence from parents to children as well as transmission of affinity bias only from parents to daughters. Financial knowledge and saving habits of students have a strong influence on the transmission of financial biases. In addition, we found a moderate effect of economic preferences in the transmission process.Social Science Citation Inde
