Anti-Lipid Accumulation and Antioxidant Effects of the Root Extract From Rubus Discolor and Its Phytochemical Analysis
Rubus species exhibit potent antioxidant properties due to their high phenolic compound content. In our study, phytochemical composition of the extract obtained from roots of Rubus discolor (RDE) was determined using LC-MS/MS. Subsequently, effect of this extract on lipid accumulation was investigated in HepG2 liver cells. For this purpose, HepG2 cells were treated with oleic acid to induce lipid accumulation. The effect of RDE on lipid accumulation was assessed using Oil-Red staining and measuring intracellular triglyceride, cholesterol levels. Melatonin was used as a positive control. Enzymes involved in lipid synthesis, including acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC1), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and transcription factor sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1c), as well as the antioxidant status, were evaluated by RT-PCR. As dose-dependent, RDE significantly reduced lipid accumulation and each concentrations (25, 50, 100 µg/mL) of RDE showed 78%, 48%, 38% ratio, respectively for Oil Red O staining. TG was found 1.92 ± 0.03, 1.76 ± 0.40, 1.22 ± 0.13, 1.41 ± 0.08 mg/mg protein for oleic acid and each concentrations (25, 50, 100 µg/mL) of RDE, respectively It significantly suppressed ACC1, FAS, and SREBP-1c (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.01, respectively) at a dose of 50 µg/mL. The extract also exhibited in vitro strong antioxidant and good anti-inflammatory properties. Pedunculagin isomer, ellagic acid and ellagic acid pentoside compounds were found to be the main compounds of RDE with high total phenolic content. The results indicate that RDE has the potential to prevent lipid accumulation. Effectiveness of Non-Invasive Vagal Nerve Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease: a Comprehensive Systematic Review And<i> Meta</I>-analysis
Yousef, Obai/0009-0001-5832-3780; Abouelmagd, Moaz/0000-0002-0511-2429Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder characterized by movement impairments. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has shown promise in treating various neurological conditions, including PD. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the existing evidence on the efficacy of nVNS in managing PD symptoms. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies published up to July 2024. The included studies investigated the effect of nVNS on various PD motor symptoms. The quality of studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (ROB-2) and NIH tool for RCTs, single-arm studies, and case series studies respectively. Statistical analysis was conducted using Review Manager version 5.4.1 with outcomes expressed as Mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The systematic review included eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one single-arm study, and one case series, encompassing a total of 217 patients with PD. The review revealed that nVNS in increasing Freezing of Gait (FOG) in PD (p = 0.04). However, no significant differences were found in UPDRS-III (p = 0.19 and p = 0.89 for on and off-medication conditions, respectively), UPDRS-II (p = 0.9), UPDRS-I (p = 0.46), Time Up and Go (p = 0.61), stand time (p = 0.87), walking speed (p = 0.22), or step length measured in meters (p = 0.8). Interestingly, a significant improvement was observed in step length measured in centimetres (p = 0.0005). No study reported serious adverse effects associated with nVNS treatment. Conclusion: Our finding suggests a potential benefit of nVNS in reducing FOG in PD, but did not demonstrate a significant improvement in other motor symptoms. Effects of an Adapted Dance Exercise Program on Trunk Control, Balance and Functional Mobility in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy: Randomized Controlled Study
Aims: The study aimed to investigate whether an 8-week adapted dance exercise program (ADEP), delivered in addition to conventional physiotherapy, would improve trunk control, balance, functional mobility, and quality of life (QoL) in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) compared with conventional physiotherapy alone. Methods: Thirty participants with CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System Level I - II) were randomly assigned to the ADEP group (n = 15) or the control group (n = 15). Both groups received conventional physiotherapy, while the ADEP group additionally performed physiotherapist-choreographed dance exercises accompanied by music, twice a week for 8 weeks. Outcomes included the Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS) for trunk control, the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) for balance, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) for functional mobility, and the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) for QoL. Results: The ADEP group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group in TCMS-Total (Delta = 10.53 vs 3.50, p < .001), TCMS-selective motor control (Delta = 6.00 vs 1.42, p < .001), TCMS-dynamic sitting balance (Delta = 7.53 vs 2.28, p < .001), and PODCI-Global scores (Delta = 4.61 vs -1.71, p < .001). Both groups improved in PBS and TUG, but between-group differences were not significant. Effect sizes indicated large improvements in trunk control in favor of the ADEP group. Conclusions: An 8-week ADEP program, when combined with conventional physiotherapy, produced clinically meaningful gains in trunk control and QoL in children and adolescents with CP. These findings support the use of dance-based rehabilitation as a feasible and engaging adjunct to physiotherapy
Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Some Novel Hydrazinecarbothioamides
Objectives: This study focused on synthesizing and characterizing novel thiosemicarbazide derivatives containing a 1,2,4-triazole moiety and evaluating their antimicrobial activity against several bacterial strains. The research aimed to identify key structural features that enhance antimicrobial efficacy through structure-activity relationship analysis and identify the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the most potent compounds to assess their potential for further development as antimicrobial agents. Materials and Methods: Nine novel thiosemicarbazide derivatives containing a 1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized by reacting 1,2,4-triazole derivatives with thiosemicarbazide precursors, and the products were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The antimicrobial activity of these compounds (5a-i) was tested against Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), using microdilution, disk diffusion, and broth microdilution methods. Dimethyl sulfoxide was used as a negative control, and Vancomycin and Meropenem were used as positive controls, with all results converted to µM for consistent analysis. Results: The synthesized thiosemicarbazide derivatives (5a-i) were confirmed to be structurally correct through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Among the tested compounds, 5e (4-bromophenyl) and 5g (n-propyl) showed significant antimicrobial activity, with 5g exhibiting the strongest effects against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Other derivatives, such as 5b (4-NO2Ph), 5c (4-FPh), and 5d (4-ClPh), showed moderate activity, while no significant activity was observed against K. pneumoniae or E. faecalis. Conclusion: The study successfully synthesized a series of novel thiosemicarbazide derivatives with a 1,2,4-triazole moiety and evaluated their antimicrobial potential. Compounds 5e and 5g exhibited significant antibacterial activity, particularly against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, with MIC values in the low micromolar range. These findings suggest that the compounds hold promise as potential antimicrobial agents, and further studies should focus on optimizing their efficacy and exploring their mechanism of action
Sports Injuries of the Sternoclavicular Joint
The sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is the primary joint connecting the upper limb to the axial skeleton. It is a saddle-shaped diarthrodial joint comprised of a large clavicular head and a small fossa on the manubrium sterni. The SCJ plays a crucial role in facilitating a wide range of shoulder movements, allowing for clavicle rotation and abduction. Despite its relatively small size and limited bony locking, the SCJ requires robust ligaments to maintain stability and withstand substantial forces. Particularly in sports like football, martial arts, and soccer, direct and indirect traumas can easily lead to injuries in this joint. SCJ injuries are relatively common, and they often complicate other shoulder injuries. Because of the strength of its ligaments, dislocations of this joint are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all dislocations. However, posterior dislocations, although infrequent, can be life-threatening. In this chapter, we will provide a brief overview of the anatomy, patterns of injury, imaging techniques, and treatment options related to the SCJ. © 2025 Springer Nature Switzerland AG
A Comparative Assessment on the Novel Long-Term Real-Time Single Object Tracking Techniques Using YOLO-NAS and YOLO11
This study sheds light on the daunting task of single-object tracking using state-of-the-art BoT-SORT, DeepSORT, SORT, and ByteTrack tracking algorithms with YOLO-NAS and YOLO11 object detectors. Object tracking is a step further of object detection and tries to detect the movement of objects in video files and it has enormous range of real-world application fields. Object tracking also assigns unique identifiers to each tracked object and tries to maintain the identity throughout the entire sequence. Current models can achieve great success in object tracking, however there are still too many obstacles and challenges lying ahead to resolve. YOLO-NAS and YOLO11 are the latest and most used object detection models. YOLO can be combined with different tracking methods such as ByteTrack, BoT-SORT, SORT, and DeepSORT for object tracking. The advantage of YOLO is its extremely fast implementation compared to the other methods. When accompanied by specialized tracking algorithms, YOLO achieves the best scores in object tracking. This study focuses on the implementation of YOLO-NAS and YOLO11 in tracking and results demonstrate that YOLO11 is more accurate and stable with BoT-SORT, however, it is faster using ByteTrack method
Nörolojik, Pediatrik ve Psikiyatrik Rehabilitasyonda Çalışan Ergoterapistlerde Algılanan Stres, İş Tatmini ve Mesleki Yaşam Kalitesinin Karşılaştırılması: Kesitsel Bir Araştırma
Amaç: Ergoterapistlerin algılanan stres düzeyleri, iş doyumu ve mesleki yaşam kalitesi çalışma alanlarına göre değişiklik gösterebi lir. Çalışmanın amacı; nörolojik, pediatrik ve psikiyatrik rehabilitasyon alanlarında çalışan ergoterapistlerin algılanan stres düzeyleri, iş do yumu ve mesleki yaşam kalitelerini karşılaştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yön temler: Çalışmaya; nörolojik, pediatrik ve psikiyatrik rehabilitasyon alanlarında çalışan 86 ergoterapist katıldı. Veriler Sosyodemografik Form, Algılanan Stres Ölçeği, Minnesota İş Doyumu Ölçeği ve Mesleki Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği ile elde edildi. Bulgular: Pediatrik, psikiyatrik ve nörolojik alanlarda çalışan tüm ergoterapistlerin algılanan stres, iş doyumu ve mesleki yaşam kalitesi puan ortalamaları benzerdi. Ergote rapistlerin çalışma alanlarına göre algılanan stres, iş doyumu ve mes leki yaşam kalitesi puanları açısından bir fark bulunmazken, pediatrik rehabilitasyonda çalışan ergoterapistlerin Mesleki Yaşam Kalitesi Öl çeği’nin Şefkat Memnuniyeti alt ölçeği puan ortalamaları, nörolojik ve psikiyatrik rehabilitasyonda çalışan ergoterapistlerden daha yüksekti. Sonuç: Farklı rehabilitasyon alanlarındaki ergoterapistler benzer algı lanan stres, iş doyumu ve genel mesleki yaşam kalitesi düzeyleri ser gilerken, pediatrik rehabilitasyondakiler istatistiksel olarak daha yüksek şefkat memnuniyetine sahipti. Pediatrik alanda şefkat memnuniyetinin yüksek olmasına katkıda bulunan faktörleri araştırmak ve diğer reha bilitasyon alanlarında bu yönü geliştirmeye yönelik stratejileri göz önünde bulundurmak için daha fazla araştırma yapılması önerilmektedir
Evaluation of the Relationship Between Job Stress Level, Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, and Phytochemical Index
Background/Objectives: Job stress negatively affects physical and psychological health and can lead to behavioral changes such as unhealthy eating. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between job stress levels, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and the phytochemical index (PI). Methods: The study included 200 healthy individuals aged 18-50 working at the Tuzla Gum Factory. Data were collected through demographic and dietary questionnaires, two-day 24-h food records, PI values, and anthropometric measurements. Job stress was assessed using the Job Stress Scale, and Mediterranean diet adherence was assessed with the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Questionnaire. Results: Waist and hip circumference, waist/hip ratio, and BMI were significantly higher in individuals with high levels of job stress (p < 0.01). Unskilled workers reported higher stress than professionals (p < 0.01). Significant differences were found in carbohydrate and fiber intake among males and in energy, protein, carbohydrate, and vitamin A intake among females with varying stress levels (p < 0.01). No significant difference in Mediterranean diet adherence was observed between medium and high stress groups. However, women had higher adherence and PI scores than men (p < 0.01). Diet adherence was better among managers than service-sales and technical staff (p < 0.01). PI scores were higher in medium stress than high stress individuals (p < 0.05) and in those with a higher BMI compared to a normal BMI (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Job stress influences both anthropometric parameters and dietary habits. Effective stress management may improve adherence to the Mediterranean diet and phytochemical intake. Workplace strategies supporting healthy eating behaviors are recommended.Science Citation Index Expande
Turkish Validity and Reliability Study of the Kidney Transplant Understanding Tool (K-TUT) in Kidney Transplant Recipients
Aim: The study was conducted methodologically to evaluate the validity and reliability of the KTUT scale in kidney transplant recipients. Material and Method: The population of the study consisted of kidney transplant patients at a private hospital group in Istanbul, while the sample comprised patients who met the inclusion criteria and volunteered for the study. Based on ten times the number of scale items, 220 individuals were included in the sample to prevent data loss and to ensure high representativeness. In the study, data collection tools such as the "Patient Information Form" and the "KTUT" scale were employed. The test-retest study was repeated two weeks later with 50 participants. The participants in the retest were not included in other tests of the scale. Findings: The overall content validity index of the scale (S-CVI/Ave) was found to be 0.93. According to the experts' opinions, the content validity of the scale is high, and the majority of the items have been deemed appropriate for the measurement purpose. The internal consistency reliability coefficient of the scale (Cronbach's Alpha) was calculated as 0.789. This threshold indicates that the scale possesses an acceptable level of reliability for use at the group level. In addition, the results of the study reveal that the scores of the K-TUT scale show a significant difference in the 27 % lower and 27 % upper groups. Conclusion: As a result of the study, the K-TUT scale has been shown to reliably distinguish knowledge levels and to be an effective measurement tool in the field of kidney transplant. It is thought that using the Turkish version of the K-TUT to evaluate the knowledge levels of kidney transplant recipients will contribute to evaluation of developed programs and the improvement of patients' treatment processes.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
