Beyond Age: Understanding How Mindful Eating and Food Label Reading Shape Generational Differences in Health Outcomes – A Cross-Sectional Study

    No full text
BackgroundThe increasing prevalence of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases poses a considerable threat to public health. Consequently, understanding generational differences in dietary behaviors has gained growing importance. This study aims to examine the direct and indirect effects of generational cohort on anthropometric indicators and self-rated diet quality (SRDQ), mediated through mindful eating and food label reading attitudes.MethodThis cross-sectional design study involved 2725 participants from Generations X (n = 786), Y (n = 933), and Z (n = 1006) living in Istanbul, T & uuml;rkiye. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics and anthropometric measurements, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR), were recorded. Data on SRDQ were collected, alongside responses to the Mindful Eating Questionnaire and the Food Label Reading Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, and chi-square tests were applied to the data. The direct and indirect effects of generation groups were analyzed using structural equation modeling.ResultsIncreasing mindful eating scores were associated with higher label reading attitude and SRDQ scores, while they were related to lower anthropometric risk indicators. Higher label reading attitudes showed an association with reduced WHR and increased SRDQ. Generation Z participants reported significantly lower scores for mindful eating, label reading attitude, anthropometric measures, and SRDQ than Generation X participants. Lower mindful eating scores were related to increased BMI among Generation Z, whereas lower label reading attitude scores were positively associated with WC and WHR. Furthermore, poor mindful eating and label reading attitudes and the combined effects of low mindful eating and label reading attitudes were linked to lower SRDQ.ConclusionPoor mindful eating and label reading attitudes in Generation Z may threaten long-term health sustainability and increase the risk of developing chronic diseases. Combining generation-specific public health strategies with interventions aimed at improving nutritional literacy and mindful eating habits from an early age could enhance individual and societal health outcomes

The research is designed as a descriptive and correlational study. It was carried out with 126 patients with hypertension between September-November 2024 in a private hospital located in Kadıköy, Istanbul. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Personal Information Form, Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale II (HLB-II), and Health Literacy Scale. While evaluating the study data, chi-square test for independent groups, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and mean and standard deviation values were analyzed. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. According to the results obtained from the study, a statistically significant negative relationship was found between healthy lifestyle behaviors and health literacy in individuals aged 65 and over with hypertension. Health literacy refers to the ability of individuals to understand, interpret, and transform health-related information into healthy lifestyle behaviors. Inadequate health literacy may hinder individuals' access to health services and negatively affect the management of chronic diseases. Therefore, it is recommended that nurses utilize their counseling role to improve both healthy lifestyle behaviors and health literacy levels.

Objective: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic compound that causes oxidative stress by disrupting antioxidant enzymes and promoting tissue lipid peroxidation. This study aimed to examine the impacts of BPA on serum oxidative stress in rats and to detect the antioxidant feature of Panax ginseng (PxG) in reducing BPA-induced oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Wistar Albino rats (250-300 g) were divided into control, control + PxG, BPA, and BPA + PxG groups. 50 mg/kg BPA and 100 mg/g PxG were given for six weeks. Serum total antioxidant and oxidant status, lipid peroxidation, and glutathione levels were determined. Results: BPA administration increased total oxidant status and lipid peroxidation, while PxG administration to the BPA group decreased these parameters. PxG also increased total antioxidant status and glutathione levels compared to the BPA group. Conclusion: BPA was seen to cause an increase in oxidative parameters and PxG administration to restore the oxidative stress that was generated after BPA exposure, suggesting that this may help to prevent the adverse effects caused by BPA exposure.Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Unit [TYL-2024-11206]Financial Disclosure: This study was funded by a grant from the Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Unit (TYL-2024-11206

Gandur, Tarik/0000-0003-0029-9076; turgut, mirac neslihan/0000-0002-0176-6839The present study aimed to investigate the interrater reliability of the dichotomous and dimensional personality disorder (PD) diagnoses based on the overall severity assessment on a rating form consisting of 18 anchored items encompassing diagnostic requirements of the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11). We also aimed to examine the extent of consistency within the diagnostic requirements grouped under the domains of self- and interpersonal functioning, specific manifestations of personality dysfunction, and distress and impairment in psychosocial functioning. Our data involved a total of 184 inter-ratings of 46 consenting patients by the same set of four clinicians. The chance-corrected agreement levels were estimated at intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.89 for the overall severity composite, ICC = 0.83 for the dimensional PD diagnosis and Fleiss' kappa = 0.77 for the dichotomous PD diagnosis. Internal consistency analysis of the overall severity composite and the domain composites revealed Cronbach's alpha coefficients approaching or exceeding 0.90 level. Our findings suggest that the diagnostic requirements listed in the ICD-11 and related documents for the severity determination in PD compose an internally consistent set. With the guidance of a rating form comprised of anchored items covering this set, competency-level clinicians are likely to perform reliable evaluations of the severity of personality disturbance, and dimensional and dichotomous PD diagnoses. The development of semi-structured interviews that would further facilitate the task of inspecting and rating each diagnostic requirement reliably will possibly enhance the implementation of the ICD-11 classification for PD around the world.Social Science Citation Inde
