Assessment of Artificial Lighting Conditions in Sunlight-Deprived Classrooms

    No full text
Numerous studies on classroom lighting emphasize a close and significant relationship between students' concentration, comprehension of course content, and the efficiency of activities such as drawing, writing, and practices, with the lighting conditions. In this context, it is particularly important to properly design both the physical and psychological effects of artificial lighting, especially in sunlight-deprived classrooms. This study examines the artificial lighting conditions of a classroom located in the basement of a university building, which has no visual connection to the outdoors. The classroom is utilized by students from the departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Industrial Design. The study investigates the effects of current artificial lighting on students, focusing on aspects such as visual perception satisfaction, light colour, illuminance level, glare, and the temporal light modulation effect. To assess students' perception of the existing lighting conditions, an online questionnaire was administered, and a total of 104 students (65 female, 39 male) who had previous experience with the classroom participated in the study. Technical measurements of the existing luminaires were conducted, and the classroom was digitally modelled using the DIALux Evo lighting software. The collected data were analysed using the SPSS statistical analysis program. The findings of the study indicate that students perceived the artificial lighting conditions as inadequate in terms of visual comfort. Moreover, based on technical measurements, simulations, and user evaluations, it was determined that the existing luminaires caused glare and temporal light modulation effects, negatively affecting the classroom environment

    No full text

Does Localization Change Management in Complicated Right and Left-Sided Diverticulitis

    No full text
BACKGROUND Distribution of the colonic diverticula differs in different populations, and right-sided colon diverticulitis (RCD) and left-sided colon diverticulitis (LCD) manifest distinct clinical features. Complicated diverticulitis (CD) mostly requires hospitalization and can be treated within a spectrum from observation to surgery. Treatment choice is formed depending on the patient's general condition, the presence of diffuse peritonitis, the localization of diverticulitis, Hinchey stage, and responsiveness to the prior treatment. Clinical disparities regarding right and LCD also led to the differences in the incidences of both emergency surgery and future elective surgery. AIM To evaluate the clinical features of CD, display the differences according to colonic localizations, and present treatment approaches. METHODS This was a retrospective study from a single centre analysing data from a prospective database. The 253 patients with history of hospitalization for CD were included and divided into two groups: RCD and LCD. To compare the differences between the two groups, the Student's t-test was used when the parametric test prerequisites were fulfilled, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used when such requirements were not fulfilled. RESULTS The 208 (82.2%) patients were found to have LCD, and 45 (17.8%) had RCD. The majority of the patients had Hinchey 1A diverticulitis (49.8%). Male gender was significantly more common in patients who underwent surgery for LCD. While persistent abdominal pain was the main prior finding in the conservative treatment of both localizations, surgery was most performed due to abscess in RCD and perforation in LCD. The presence of an accompanying malignancy during colonoscopy was significantly more common in LCD cases who underwent surgery. Hartmann's procedure was the most performed technique in emergency settings (56.3%), while laparoscopic colectomy with anastomosis was in elective settings (53.9%). In addition, surgery was found to prolong the mean length of hospital stay in LCD patients. CONCLUSION Although diverticulitis is a benign condition, the need for an individualized and evidence-based approach makes management challenging. Localization of the disease has an important role in determining the appropriate treatment

    No full text
ABSTRACT – Objective – The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of personalized task-specific 3D-printed terminal devices integrated with a standard myoelectric prosthesis in improving functional independence and comfort in a patient with systemic scleroderma and transradial amputation. Methods – A 57-year-old female patient with systemic scleroderma and a left transradial amputation used the following three task-specific 3D-printed adaptive terminal devices—a sock aid, buttoning tool, and jar opener—developed using Tinkercad and fabricated with PLA via FDM printing. These devices were integrated into her pre-existing standard myoelectric prosthesis (Ottobock MyoFacil, four-channel transradial model), which the patient had already been using for daily activities. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and visual analog scale (VAS) for pain. Results – Canadian Occupational Performance Measure scores increased from 2/10 to 7–8/10 in performance and satisfaction. Functional Independence Measure scores improved from 4 to 6, reflecting reduced need for assistance in self-care. VAS scores decreased from 7/10 to 3/10, indicating reduced pain during activities of daily living. Conclusions – The integration of low-cost, patient-specific 3D-printed terminal devices with an existing myoelectric prosthesis significantly improved function, independence, and comfort. This case supports further exploration of additive manufacturing as a complementary strategy to enhance prosthetic function in individuals with rare and complex impairments. Clinical Relevance – 3D printing offers a scalable, adaptable solution for task-specific 3D-printed terminal devices, particularly in patients with systemic comorbidities. © 2025 Lippincott Williams & Wilkin

    No full text
Background: Correct use of the feet, step techniques, and positions constitute significant factors in the success of a dancer. Moreover, the type of dance has crucial effects on the posture of the foot and ankle. Therefore, the primary aim of our study was to determine whether there was a relationship between dancesport, dance experience (years), shoe-wearing time (hours), and shoe heel height (centimeters) in dance athletes performing Sportive Latin American Ballroom (SLAB) dance. Second, we aimed to compare the foot posture of SLAB dancers and nondancers with similar demographic characteristics. Methods: Twenty-six professional SLAB dancers and 26 nondancers who had similar demographic characteristics and did not use high-heeled shoes volunteered to take part in this study. Foot posture (using the Foot Posture Index [FPI]), foot pronation (using the navicular drop test [NDT]), tibiocalcaneal angle, hallux valgus angle (HVA) (using a goniometer), and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) (using the weightbearing lunge test) were evaluated. Results: There was a positive moderate correlation between FPI score and shoe-wearing time on the dominant (P = .041; r = 0.40) and nondominant (P = .026; r = 0.43) sides. A positive very good correlation was found between shoe heel height and HVA (P < .001; r = 0.75). A negative good correlation was observed between years of dancing and nondominant ankle dorsiflexion ROM (P = .027; r =-0.43). When dancers and nondancers were compared, a statistically significant difference was found between FPI and NDT scores (P < .001). The FPI and NDT scores, tibiocalcaneal angle, HVA, and ankle dorsiflexion ROM were significantly greater in the dancer group compared with the nondancer group (P < .001) in all measurements of the dominant and nondominant sides. Conclusions: Revealing the relationship between dance experience and shoe-wearing time and the difference between the foot posture and deformities of athletes who perform SLAB dance and those of nondancers constitutes a pivotal endeavor that will increase awareness and knowledge among dancers and clinicians. No full text
This study aimed to compare the efficacy of peloid and hotpack for chronic low back pain (CLBP) due to lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Sixty individuals aged 18-50 years with CLBP due to LDH were randomized into two groups: peloid therapy (n=30) and hot pack therapy (n=30). Treatments were applied five days a week for 15 sessions, and all partici-pants received 20 minutes of lumbar TENS per session. Evaluations were conducted before and after treatment, including pain (VAS), Back Pain Functional Scale (BPFS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), quality of life (SF-36), range of motion, and finger-floor distance (FFD). Peloid group showed significant improvements in BPFS, physical functioning, role limitations due to emotional problems, vitality, emotional well-being, pain, and general health compared to the hot pack group (p0.05). In conclusion, while both treatments were effective in reducing pain and disabili-ty, peloid therapy provided superior improvements in functional status and quality of life compared to hot pack therapy

    No full text

Low Dose Ionising Radiation Elicits MPTP Comparable Alterations in Locomotor Function, Oxidative Balance and Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Zebrafish Embryos

    No full text
Prenatal exposure to environmental factors including low-dose ionising radiation and neurotoxins may disrupt the oxidant-antioxidant balance. Our aim was to assess the effects of exposure to low-dose ionising radiation (LDIR) and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), which is a neurotoxin used to model Parkinson's disease (PD), on developing zebrafish embryos, focusing on the oxidant-antioxidant system and markers of mitochondrial damage associated with PD. Zebrafish embryos were divided into four groups: control, LDIR, MPTP, and LDIR combined with MPTP (LDIR + MPTP). A dental x-ray unit (60 kVp, 7 mA) was used for the exposures. The 0.08 s LDIR exposure was measured as 0.065 mGy using optically stimulated dosimeters. At the end of 72 h after fertilization, locomotor activities, acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, oxidative stress and antioxidant status were assessed. Expressions of genes associated with in PD as markers of mitochondrial damage (pink1, parkin, dj1 and lrrk2) were determined by RT-PCR. Developmental toxicity was observed in all exposure groups as evidenced by pericardial edema, yolk sac edema and spinal curvature. LDIR exposure in zebrafish embryos affected oxidative and mitochondrial stress markers, as well as locomotor activity and AChE as a marker of cognitive function at levels comparable to the MPTP exposure. Our study is the first to determine the effects of LDIR from a dental x-ray unit on the response to MPTP, and we aim to further elucidate the mechanism of these changes observed particularly in the LDIR + MPTP group.Marmara Universitesi [Bapko Number of 10981]This study was supported by Marmara University Scientific Research Project Unit (BAPKO) number of 10981

    No full text
Background: This study contributes to wound healing with prolotherapy in people with pressure injuries. The study was planned and conducted as a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of prolotherapy on the care of pressure injuries. Methods: The study was carried out with patients with pressure injuries in the intensive care unit of a city hospital between April and June 2023. A power analysis was performed, and the sample size was calculated as 20 patients, including 10 in the intervention and 10 in the control group. The patients in the experimental group were given wound care with gelofusine as prolotherapy in the morning and evening for three days, and the injury site was covered with a sterile sponge and fixation tape. The patients in the control group were treated with saline in the morning and evening for three days. In both groups, the wound width, depth, and length were measured and evaluated prior to each intervention for three days. Results: In the study, a significant difference was found between the mean ages of the participants in the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05). The decrease in width measurements in the experimental group was found to be statistically significant compared to the previous measurements, while the increase in width measurements in the control group was significant compared to the previous measurements (p < 0.05). Depth measurements decreased statistically significantly in the experimental group, while they increased significantly in the control group compared to previous measurement values (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, it was determined that the administration of gelofusine for pressure injuries as prolotherapy in the experimental group may be more effective in wound healing than saline treatment applied in the control group. Further studies are warranted.Science Citation Index Expande
