The Effects of Pelvic Floor Muscle Training Applied Via Telerehabilitation During the Postpartum Period: a Randomized Controlled Study
Purpose: To examine the short- and medium-term effects of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) applied via telerehabilitation (TR) on pelvic floor muscle function, pelvic floor symptoms, and quality of life. Methods: Fifty-eight women between the ages of 18 and 35 who were between 6 and 8 weeks postpartum were included. The participants were randomized into the PFMT applied via TR (TR-PFMT) group or the supervised PFMT (S-PFMT) group. The PFMT was performed for 8 weeks, 2 days a week, and 45-50 min a day. The participants' pelvic floor muscle function, pelvic floor symptoms, and quality of life were evaluated with the superficial electromyography, the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20), and the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire-7, respectively. Results: Phasic, tonic, and endurance activities of the pelvic floor muscles were significantly higher in both groups immediately after and 8 weeks after the exercise program (all p < 0.05). In addition, total PFDI-20 and all subscales' scores decreased significantly in the TR-PFMT group (all p < 0.05). In the S-PFMT group, total PFDI-20 (p = 0.012) and Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (p = 0.012) scores improved significantly. A significant difference was found between the groups in favor of the TR-PFMT group in terms of total PFDI-20 (p = 0.024; p = 0.024) and Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (p = 0.033; p = 0.040) scores immediately after and 8 weeks after the exercise program. Conclusions: TR-PFMT and S-PFMT improved women's pelvic floor muscle function, pelvic floor symptoms, and quality of life in the short and medium term. The Protective Effects of Myrtus Communis Subsp. on Ovariectomized Diabetic Rats’ Renal and Intestinal Tissues: in Vivo and in Silico Approaches
Introduction: Postmenopausal diabetes is a condition that affects millions of women and their quality of life. Also, kidney and small intestine tissues are damaged due to diabetes. The present study aimed to examine the protective effects of an extract prepared from Myrtus communis leaves on kidney and small intestine tissues against experimentally created postmenopausal diabetes. Methods: For this purpose, experimental rats were randomly divided into six groups (Control; ovariectomy:OVX, diabetic:D, ovariectomy + diabetic:OVX + D, ovariectomy + diabetic + oestrogen:OVX + D+E2, ovariectomy + diabetic + MC: OVX + D+MC) and kidney and small intestine tissues were taken after the experimental procedure. Results: Evaluations of biochemical parameters (glutathione and glutathione-related enzymes, antioxidant enzymes, etc.) showed that MC had a protective effect on kidney and small intestine tissues in diabetes and ovariectomy groups. Conclusion: It can be suggested that MC extract has a protective effect on small intestine and kidney tissues in postmenopausal diabetes and may be a good herbal source for this purpose. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Science Citation Index Expande
Gold Nanoparticle/Silk Fibroin-Based Nanofiber Enhances Skin Regeneration
Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the wound-healing potential of gold nanoparticles and silk fibroin-based nanofiber produced by green chemistry. Methods The electrospinning method was used to prepare the nanofiber. Twenty rats were exposed to a 7-day treatment period and another 20 rats were exposed to a 21-day treatment period. Rat groups were control, silver, silk fibroin, and silk + gold nanoparticle groups for each period. The effect of the gold nanoparticle/silk fibroin-based nanofiber was examined in skin samples by using biochemical and histological analysis. In biochemical analysis, skin oxidant and antioxidant parameters were determined. Key findings Parameters indicating skin damage returned to their previous levels 7 and 21 days after the wound formation using gold nanoparticle/silk fibroin-based nanofiber. Gold nanoparticle/silk fibroin-based nanofiber initiated hair follicle formation at the wound site and accelerated the re-epithelialization process. Conclusions It was found that the nanofiber prepared by adding gold nanoparticles to silk fibroin had better wound-healing properties than silk fibroin nanofibers without gold nanoparticles. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Science Citation Index Expande
The Relationship Between Health Literacy and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors of Women With Preeclampsia
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this studywas to explore the relationship between the levels of health literacy and healthy lifestyle behaviors in women with preeclampsia. This research was planned as a descriptive relational study. METHODS: The data were collected from 251 pregnant women with preeclampsia who were admitted to a training and research hospital between February and July 2024. The Patient Information Form, Health Literacy Scale, and Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours in Pregnancy Scale were used for data collection. RESULTS: The mean Health Literacy Scale total score of the women was 76.25 +/- 14.48, and the mean Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours in Pregnancy Scale total score was 110.17 +/- 17.57. A moderate positive correlation was found between the mean total scores of the scales (r=0.365, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: As health literacy levels increased amongwomen diagnosed with preeclampsia, the level of healthy lifestyle behaviors also increased. It would be beneficial to integrate the topic of health literacy into prenatal care and pregnancy preparation classes.Science Citation Index Expande
The Effect of Mirror Therapy on Spasticity in Adult Patients With Stroke: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Objective This study aims to investigate the effects of Mirror Therapy (MT) on spasticity and related parameters in stroke patients Methods A systematic review was performed in databases PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Cochrane, and Scopus databases for published RCTs (Randomized Controlled Trials) from the date of each database's inception to May 2021. Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) in adult patients with stroke compared to conventional therapy, sham, and additional therapy control were included. Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale was used to assess the methodological quality of each study. Results The overall effect of MT on MAS was statistically significant and beneficial when studies were analyzed in terms of both upper and lower extremities (p < 0.001). MT demonstrated a large and beneficial overall effect on the Brunnstrom Assessment compared to conventional therapy (p < 0.001). The overall impact of MT on Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) was large and statistically significant (p < 0.001). However, a meta-analysis of three studies using the 10-meter walk test showed that the overall effect of MT was not statistically significant (p = 0.258). Conclusion This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrates reductions in upper and lower extremity spasticity and improved motor recovery with MT, both isolated and combined with other treatments, in adults with stroke. Biopsychosocial-Based Exercise Model for Rheumatic Diseases Via Telerehabilitation: a Case Series With a One Year Follow Up
Purpose: This study aims to examine the sustainability of the biopsychosocial exercise performed by telerehabilitation on individuals with rheumatic disease, with and without supervision, and investigate the effect of the biopsychosocial-based exercise model on biopsychosocial status, general health status, and anxiety-depression levels of individuals. Method: Twenty patients with rheumatic diseases performed a biopsychosocial-based exercise model Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach via telerehabilitation with physiotherapist-supervised and unsupervised exercises who continued for three sessions per week for 12 months. Outcome measures were Health Assessment Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire. Patients were assessed at baseline, 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th months. Results: There was no significant difference by time for Health Assessment Questionnaire (p=0.512) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-anxiety and depression scores (p=0.162 and p=0.825, respectively) between the five measures at the one-year followup. Similarly, there is no significant difference in Cognitive Exercise Therapy Approach-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire score outcomes by time (p=0.184). Conclusion: In this study a group of rheumatic patients with face-to-face biopsychosocial exercise habits were able to maintain their exercise habits with realtime telerehabilitation with or without supervised during the 1-year follow-up period during the COVID-19 pandemic was shown. Although there was no improvement in the parameters during the pandemic period when social isolation and depression-anxiety disorders increased, the level of recovery which individuals had previously gained was not adversely affected and the healing properties were preserved with the help of telerehabilitation.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
Unraveling the Potential of Stem Cell Therapy in Motor Neuron Disease: A Narrative Review
Motor neuron disorders (MNDs), including ALS, are deadly neurodegenerative conditions that cause progressive motor neuron degeneration. With neuroprotection and the potential for neuron regeneration employing MSCs, ESCs, iPSCs, and NSCs, stem cell treatment presents a viable alternative to current medicines, which only control a limited number of symptoms. Following PRISMA criteria, this narrative review methodically screened 1248 records from the Cochrane, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Following a thorough screening process, 22 studies, including preclinical models and 19 clinical trials, were analysed to assess the therapeutic mechanisms, safety, and efficacy of stem cell therapies for MNDs. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has shown a promising safety profile and possible therapeutic efficacy in ALS, with no substantial transplant-related toxicity noted. ALS functional rating scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) scores and forced vital capacity (FVC) assessments from clinical trials, such as those evaluating autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs, demonstrated stabilisation in ALS development. Studies have also emphasised as to how immunomodulation and neurotrophic factors play a part in MSC-based therapies. Recent data indicate that repeated intrathecal MSC injection could extend the duration of therapeutic advantages. Clinical trials have shown safety and early efficacy signals for motor neurons produced from embryonic stem cells (ESCs), especially using AstroRx (R). This suggests that ESCs could be a viable option for regenerative medicine. Nonetheless, issues, like host integration and differentiation optimisation, still exist. Although clinical translation is still in its early stages, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and their derivatives provide disease modelling and patient-specific therapeutic applications. Stem cell therapy holds promise for treating MND, with MSCs leading the way in current trials. It is necessary to enhance ESC- and iPSC-based techniques to tackle integration issues. To ensure long-term safety and efficacy, therapies must be developed using standardised protocols, patient stratification, optimised delivery, and large-scale studies
The Effect of Compulsory Citizenship Behaviors on Subjective Vitality Among Nurses
Elibol, Esengul/0000-0002-8920-5306; Yildiz, Bora/0000-0002-0373-6457;Aim The study aims to assess the extent of compulsory citizenship behaviors (CCBs) and their impact on the nurses' subjective vitality based on self-determination theory. Background CCBs are harmful to both nurses and organizations. These behaviors mean employees are expected to perform additional tasks outside their job descriptions. Although CCBs are highlighted within the recent nursing literature, empirical evidence of their effects is lacking. Methods This is descriptive cross-sectional research. The study included 244 staff nurses using a convenience sampling method who worked in two hospitals in Istanbul. Data were collected via a survey consisting of a personal information form, the compulsory citizenship scale, and the subjective vitality scale. STROBE guidelines were followed when reporting the study. Descriptive statistical analyses, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA test, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical simple linear regression analyses were used. Results The participants' mean scores for compulsory citizenship and subjective vitality were 3.34 out of 5 (SD = 1.05) and 4.15 out of 7 (SD = 1.36), respectively. Nurses' compulsory citizenship scores significantly differed according to their education level, income, and sector. Their subjective vitality scores statistically differed according to their income levels. Regression analysis revealed that CCBs were significant negative predictors of subjective vitality (beta = -0.22, p < 0.01). Conclusion By examining the CCBs and subjective vitality relationship, the current study extended the existing knowledge by drawing attention to the destructive and harmful effects of CCBs on positive psychological sources of nurses' subjective vitality. CCBs negatively predicted subjective vitality. Clinical Relevance Organizational factors such as CCBs, which leads to a lack of autonomy, affect nurses' well-being, thus affecting care quality and patient safety. As the International Council of Nurses mentioned, "Nurses cope with many physical, mental, emotional, and ethical challenges. It is essential that we address these challenges in a way that supports their overall health". In this regard, managers and policymakers in hospitals should develop preventive cautions for CCBs. Effectiveness of Individual Psychoeducational Interventions for Caregivers of Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Stroke is a major cause of disability, and patients who suffer strokes have limited mobility and functional tasks, necessitating daily reliance on caregivers. However, caregivers of stroke patients often experience depression and anxiety, negatively impacting their mental health and reducing their quality of life. Psychoeducational interventions may be a solution to support the well-being of stroke caregivers. This study is performed to assess the overall effectiveness of individual psychoeducational interventions for caregivers of stroke patients. A thorough search of Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was performed for published studies in English up to June 2023. Clinical trials assessing the efficacy of psychoeducational interventions on quality of life, depression, or care burden among stroke caregivers compared to usual care were included. A total of 18 clinical trials, 16 randomized clinical trials (RCTs), and two non-RCTs, with a total of 2007 patients, were included. The study's pooled results revealed a significant increase in the quality of life in the group receiving psychoeducational interventions compared to the comparison group (SMD = 0.34, 95% CI 0.13-0.55, p value = 0.002), while no significant difference was found in terms of depression (SMD = - 0.05, 95% CI - 0.23 to 0.14, p value = 0.62) or caregiver burden (SMD = - 0.61, 95% CI - 1.65 to 0.44, p value = 0.25). Psychoeducation programs should be considered as a supportive intervention to improve quality of life in caregivers; however, their impact on depression and caregiver burden remains inconclusive. However, further studies with a larger sample size are needed to confirm the results
Novel Triazole-Urea Hybrids as Promising EGFR Inhibitors: Synthesis, Molecular Modeling and Antiproliferative Activity Studies Against Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of mortality among women globally. In this study, novel promising urea derivatives containing a 4-phenyl-5-sulphanylidene-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole group were synthesized and evaluated for their biological activities against breast cancer. The cytotoxicity and apoptotic profiles of these compounds were assessed on the MCF7 breast cancer cell line and the L929 fibroblast cell line. Compound 5c exhibited the strongest anticancer activity against MCF7 cells with an IC50 value of 56.97+4.22 mu M, while it showed significantly lower cytotoxicity against L929 cells (IC50 = 1651+18.39 mu M). Compound 5c also induced early apoptosis in MCF7 cells, with an apoptosis rate of 18.40% and 5.28%, respectively. Additionally, the EGFR inhibitory activities of the synthesized compounds were evaluated, with compound 5i demonstrating the most potent EGFR inhibition, showing an IC50 value of 35.1 nM. These results suggest that compound 5c likely exerts its anticancer effects through mechanisms other than EGFR inhibition, while compound 5i has significant potential as an effective EGFR inhibitor. Molecular modeling studies were conducted to suggest putative binding interactions of compounds 5d, 5e and 5i with wildtype hEGFR.
