Measuring Narcissism in Cyberspace: Psychometric Evaluation of the Turkish Online Narcissism Personality Inventory (ONPI)

    No full text
The widespread use of digital technologies and the increasing prevalence of internet usage in a globalized world have significantly influenced individuals' personality traits. In particular, the restriction of face-to-face interactions during global pandemics has led individuals to maintain their lives in digital environments. These developments have made it increasingly important to investigate the relationship between internet use and personality characteristics. This study aims to adapt the Online Narcissistic Personality Inventory (ONPI), developed by Chou and Farn (2015) based on the 40-item Narcissistic Personality Inventory by Raskin and Terry (1988), into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties. The study sample consists of 397 individuals from diverse age groups and socio-demographic backgrounds. Data was analyzed using SPSS 30 and AMOS 30 software. According to the results of the exploratory factor analysis, the item factor loadings ranged from 0.466 to 0.812, and the total variance explained by the scale was found to be 58.36%. Confirmatory factor analysis results (Chi-square/df:2.584; RMSEA:0.063; NFI: 0.84; IFI: 0.90; TLI: 0.87; CFI: 0.90; GFI: 0.90) indicated that the scale exhibits a five-factor structure with 27 items. The internal consistency of the scale was high, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.93. Additionally, the item total correlations ranged between 0.326 and 0.700. The findings demonstrate that the Turkish adaptation of the Online Narcissistic Personality Inventory is a valid and reliable measurement tool

BACKGROUND: Extravasation of non-cytotoxic medications can lead to serious complications such as pain, tissue necrosis, limb loss, and even death. This descriptive cross-sectional study aims to assess the knowledge levels of emergency department (ED) nurses regarding extravasation incidents involving non-cytotoxic medications and to highlight the importance of effective management and prevention. METHODS: The study was conducted in the EDs of three hospitals in Istanbul, T & uuml;rkiye, between November 19, 2020 and December 31, 2020. A total of 100 ED nurses participated in the study. Inclusion criteria required nurses to be working full-time in the EDs during the study period and to provide written and verbal consent. The study utilized a survey to assess sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge of non-cytotoxic medications (e.g., epinephrine), symptoms of extravasation, prevention strategies, and intervention practices. RESULTS: The mean age of the nurses was 29.43 years, with 57% female and 73% holding a bachelor's degree. Among participants, 52% had 0-3 years of ED experience. Ninety-one percent reported not receiving education on extravasation after graduation, and 82% indicated no extravasation protocol was in place at their workplace. Knowledge about non-cytotoxic medications causing extravasation significantly increased with ED experience (p=0.035). Nurses in units with an extravasation protocol had significantly higher knowledge levels (p=0.007). Female nurses demonstrated better knowledge of extravasation symptoms than male nurses (p=0.012). Nurses with a bachelor's or higher degree had significantly better knowledge than others (p=0.015). The knowledge rate for the extravasation care protocol was 64%, with the most recognized protocol item being "immediately stop the infusion" (97%) and the least recognized being "aspirate the medication not to exceed 3-5 mL" (33%). Strong correlations were found between non-pharmacological factors and knowledge of non-cytotoxic medications (r=0.601; p<0.001), as well as between knowledge of extravasation care protocols and non-pharmacological factors (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The study highlights the need for targeted education and the establishment of institutional protocols for managing and preventing extravasation in EDs. Nurses' knowledge significantly impacts their adherence to prevention and care protocols. To ensure patient safety, it is important to provide ongoing education and implement evidence-based intervention protocols for the management of extravasation in ED settings

Introduction and Hypothesis To translate and perform cultural adaptation of the Pelvic Floor Dysfunction-SENTINEL (PFD-SENTINEL) screening tool into Turkish and to establish its reliability and validity for female athletes. Methods The study included 200 female athletes (mean age 22 +/- 4 years). The translation of the PFD-SENTINEL, which comprised the symptoms related to PFD and item sections related to general risk factors and sports-related risk factors, was performed in accordance with international recommendations. The severity of PFD symptoms was assessed with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20). Psychometric analyses consisted of assessing the following: internal consistency reliability using the Kuder-Richardson-20 (KR-20) coefficient, construct validity using confirmatory factor analysis, and criterion validity. Results The reliability was acceptable for the PFD-SENTINEL items assessed using the KR-20, at 0.581, indicating moderate internal consistency. All fit indices except standardized root mean square residual indicated a perfect fit for the final models. Criterion validity was supported by positive correlations between the PFD-SENTINEL symptom score and the PFDI-20 score (r = 0.724, p < 0.001) and between the PFD-SENTINEL item score and the PFIQ-20 scores (r = 0.334; p < 0.001). Conclusions The Turkish version of the PFD-SENTINEL is a reliable and valid instrument to screen for PFD in female athletes

    No full text
This study investigates the reasons behind the transition of nurses from private hospitals to public hospitals in Turkiye, focusing on working conditions, compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and burnout. The study used a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The sample consisted of 224 nurses who previously worked in private hospitals and were employed in public hospitals at the time of data collection. Researchers collected data via a questionnaire incorporating demographic questions and validated scales on compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and burnout. Parametric and nonparametric comparison tests were used to compare participants' experiences in private and public hospitals regarding working conditions. There were statistically significant differences between the groups (p < 0.05). Also, participant nurses' negative organizational behavior experiences scores (compulsory citizenship behavior, presenteeism, and work-related burnout) statistically significantly differed (p < 0.05), considering their scores based on private hospital and public hospital experiences. The study concluded that nurses worked longer and took less leave in private hospitals. Participant nurses also reported that they exhibited more compulsory citizenship presenteeism and experienced a higher rate of work-related burnout while working in private hospitals. We would like to thank the nurses who participated in this study and to the administrators of the faculties who have made this study possible

    No full text
Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterised by demyelination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of Korean ginseng root extract (KGE) using a cuprizone-induced demyelination model. Materials and Methods: C57BL/6 mice were divided into control, demyelination and remyelination groups and each group was treated with KGE. Demyelination was induced with 0.2% cuprizone in the diet for four weeks. KGE (100 mg/kg) was administered by gavage during or after the cuprizone exposure. Body weight, food and water intake, and motor performance parameters were investigated. In addition, glutathione (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) malondialdehyde (MDA), oligodendrocyte transcription factor-2 (OLIG2) and myelin basic protein (MBP) levels were measured in brain samples, while MBP and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry and myelin status was examined using Luxol Fast Blue staining. Results: Korean ginseng root extract prevented myelin loss, promoted remyelination, and improved motor performance. It reduced oxidative stress by increasing GSH, GST, and SOD levels while decreasing MDA. KGE also suppressed demyelination by reducing astrogliosis and restoring OLIG2 and MBP levels. Conclusion: Korean ginseng root extract exhibits neuroprotective properties during demyelination and promotes remyelination, highlighting its therapeutic potential for MS.Marmara University Scientific Research Project Committee [TDK-2023-11091]Financial Support: This study was financially supported by the Marmara University Scientific Research Project Committee (Project code: TDK-2023-11091) .Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Liminal Athletes: Abusive Hazing and Masculinities in Homosocial Team Sports1

    No full text
In this study, we aimed to reveal the dimensions and qualities of violence and abuse in sports through hazing in Turkish sample. We also consider hazing, which involves inhuman and deviant behavior, through masculinities, homosociality, and liminality. We applied qualitative research method with social constructionist and pro-feminist approach. We used in-depth interview and visual painting application technique with a retrospective design. We carried out painting application and interviewed 28 athletes from team branches such as football, basketball, volleyball, rowing, water polo, underwater hockey and American football. We applied content analysis based on thematic coding and revealed 4 themes: 1) “foggy” and “hazy” locker rooms, 2) knowing your place as a rookie, 3) interfering with bodily integrity, 4) “prospective” members on the threshold. We can say that within the masculine culture of sports, liminal athletes can make the teams by experiencing a masculinity that is often subordinated to hegemonic masculinities. In this process, liminal athletes harden because they have been crushed so much; and as they harden, they crush those coming from below. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
