Bulut, Ali Can/0000-0002-1586-7403; Cagiltay, Nergiz Ercil/0000-0003-0875-9276PurposeAvatars, representing users in the digital world, can influence users' behavior and attitudes. This study evaluates the impact of representing dental students receiving temporomandibular joint (TMJ) education in the metaverse via an anonymous or identified avatar.MethodsParticipants included 80 dental students in their fourth and fifth years of study. They were randomly assigned to either the avatar group (identified avatar) or the control group (anonymous avatar). Prior to training, participants completed a demographic questionnaire and a pretraining knowledge assessment. TMJ training was conducted in the metaverse for both groups. Pre- and post-training assessments included the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and a shyness scale to ensure group comparability. A post-test consisting of five questions was administered to both groups after 2 weeks of training.ResultsThere were no significant differences in pretraining scores for prior knowledge (p = 0.67), trait anxiety (p = 0.28), state anxiety (p = 0.92), or shyness (p = 0.42) between the avatar and control groups, indicating comparability at baseline. Post-training analysis revealed significantly higher post-test scores in the avatar group (median = 80) compared to the control group (median = 60) (p = 0.03).ConclusionsMetaverse environments offer various benefits for students, educators, and educational institutions in health education programs. Representing learners and their identities in training environments can enhance learning outcomes.Science Citation Index Expande

    No full text
This study uses detailed data on exports from the European Union (EU-28) to non-EU countries to investigate the impact of global production fragmentation on the choice of transportation modes. The article finds a positive relationship between production fragmentation and air transportation. The study also finds that air transportation is more likely to be chosen for high-value products. Additionally, the positive effect of production fragmentation on the likelihood of using air transportation is more pronounced when goods are exported to medium-range markets, upper-middle-income countries, countries with better air transportation infrastructure, and time-sensitive products. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

Caner, Mustafa/0000-0001-5741-5037Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has gained considerable attention in foreign and second-language education. As part of a two-year project, this study employed a mixed-methods research design with 60 B2-level learners of English as a foreign language. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of repetitive listening and listening duration on participants' listening comprehension, speaking, critical thinking, listening strategies, and self-regulated learning strategies. The participants were divided into two groups, with the experimental group (n = 30) participating in the innovative Mobile Extensive Listening and Podcasting (MELAP) intervention. MELAP is a novel approach within the MALL framework that involves extensive listening to podcasts in the target language, content creation, and podcasting. The ten-week treatment revealed that unlike in previous studies, our experimental group improved not only in listening comprehension but also demonstrated significant gains in speaking skills and critical thinking. Notably, enhanced critical thinking skills were observed, correlated with an increased total listening duration and repeated extensive listening. Qualitative data analysis sheds light on how participants viewed the MELAP intervention, revealing what motivated them, what distractions they faced, and their opinions on developing and sharing podcasts. These findings emphasize the potential of the MELAP to enhance language skills and foster critical thinking in language learners, contributing to the ongoing discourse on the effectiveness of MALL.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) [:113K727]This research was funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK, Grant No:113K727) .Social Science Citation Inde

In this study, new multi-band patch antenna design models are proposed for use in 5G networks. The purpose of the designs is to open rectangular slots on rectangular shaped patch antennas and bring them to the desired operating conditions with parametric analyzes. The designs were carried out by following the same procedure steps using five different dielectric laminate substrate materials, such as RO3003, RT6006, FR4, RO3203, RO6010, and one denim fabric base material. The antennas were compared in terms of return loss, gain and radiation characteristics. Except for the antenna designed with RO3203 at certain values of rectangular slots, radiation at multiple frequencies was obtained at 5G frequencies. With the proposed method, improvement was observed for return loss and bandwidth characteristics in the RO3203 based antenna. This study will be a resource for antenna researchers by revealing the responses of different substrate materials to the same design method for 5G bands in patch antennas. © 2024 IEEE

Ankarali, Handan Camdeviren/0000-0002-3613-0523;OBJECTIVES: To distinguish whether idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition predisposing to multiple sclerosis (MS) or an isolated disease, the current gene transcription factor Activator Protein -1 (AP -1) was evaluated with its potential to differentiate both diseases. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the use of AP -1 as biomarkers for the discrimination of IIH and MS. METHODS: AP -1, TNF-alpha, and IL -6 protein values in the CSF of the cases were evaluated by the ELISA method. The numerical measures of the groups and the ability of AP -1 to distinguish the groups were analyzed with the ROC curve. RESULTS: There was no difference between the groups in CSF TNF-alpha, IL -6, CSF, and serum biochemistry analyses. However, it was determined that the AP -1 concentration (pg/ml) was significantly higher in the IIH group, the sensitivity of AP -1 in separating those with IIH was 75%, and the specificity in separating those with MS was 60% in those with an AP -1 concentration of 606.5 and above. CONCLUSION: According to our results, the fact that CSF TNF-alpha and IL -6 values did not differ in IIH compared to MS revealed that IIH could not methodologically control MS, and AP -1 was a supportive parameter in differentiating both diseases (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 31) . Sports Joint-Stock Companies in Scope of Turkish Commercial Code, Master's Thesis, Ankara, 2024. Humanity has been engaged in sportive activities for thousands of years. Sportive activities have become a tool for people to improve their entertainment and physical health. Football, on the other hand, separates itself from all other sports branches and comes across as the most followed sports branch in the world. Football has reached a larger audience with its live broadcast on television and has almost become an industry. With the commercialization in sports and football, the organization of sports clubs has increased and started to change. The need for a professional management approach in sports clubs has increased with the growth of organizational structure in sports and the global spread of football as an industry. Sports clubs, which were established as associations, tried to transfer to this management perspective by alienating football branches to a company that has already been established or will be established. However, this sort of organization caused many problems both in financial and structural terms. Therefore, in line with the need for an independent sports law, Law No. 7405 on Sports Clubs and Sports Federations was published and entered into force on 26.04.2022. Nevertheless, there are separate regulations in the Turkish Commercial Code No. 6102 concerning sports public limited companies, distinct from the regulations for joint-stock companies. With the mentioned law, the concept of a sports joint-stock company was introduced. Therefore, this thesis will examine, regulations on sports joint-stock companies introduced in the Law of Sports Clubs and Sports Federations along with the regulations about joint-stock companies in the Turkish Commercial Code. Keywords: company, joint-stock company, incorporation in sports clubs, sports joint-stock company, sports club

This underscores the pressing clinical need for rapid and accurate detection of this harmful bacteria. In this study, we report the screening and discovery of a novel biomarker for S. pneumoniae detection. We used S. pneumoniae nucleases as biomarker and we have identified a specific oligonucleotide that works as substrate. This biomarker relies on a specific nuclease activity found on the bacterial membrane, forming the basis for the development of both fluorescence and electrochemical biosensors. We observed an exceptionally high sensitivity in the performance of the electrochemical biosensor, detecting as low as 10(2) CFU mL(-1), whereas the fluorescence sensor demonstrated comparatively lower efficiency, with a detection limit of 10(6) CFU mL(-1). Moreover, the specificity studies have demonstrated the biosensors' remarkable capacity to identify S. pneumoniae from other pathogenic bacteria. Significantly, both biosensors have demonstrated the ability to identify S. pneumoniae cultured from clinical samples, providing compelling evidence of the potential clinical utility of this innovative detection system.Vetenskapsrdet [LiU-301097, KAW 2022.0198]; Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation [2021-05641]; Swedish Research CouncilThis work was supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Grant: LiU-301097, FJH), KAW Support for Ukrainian Researchers (Grant: KAW 2022.0198, AP), and The Swedish Research Council (Grant: 2021-05641, FJH)

    Get PDF
In this globalized and technological world, to keep up with the changes in the translation industry, various translation tools have emerged. However, the difference between the Computer-Assisted Translation tools and Neural Machine Translation tools in terms of efficiency and effectiveness has still been wondered. To close the gap, quantitative research was done and a survey consisting of twenty questions was conducted on Trados and DeepL about their communicative and linguistic properties to find out the performances of Trados and DeepL in the course of translation and determine which translation tool is more preferred by translators. Later, the perspectives of thirty-three experienced and professional translators were tabulated with the frequency analysis method and discussed in detail. It is hypothesized that if the qualities of DeepL and Trados are known to translators in detail, translators can make better use of these tools and complete their projects more reliably, and conveniently. This study showed that Trados is a much better choice for translators in terms of offering both communicative and linguistic assistance. Neural Machine Translation tools are still far behind Computer-Assisted Translation tools providing reliable, coherent, and consistent translations
