    No full text
Water samples taken from the & Ccedil;ubuk Stream (Ankara, Turkey) were inoculated into nutrient broth media containing Setazol Navy Blue SBG (SNB), an organic pollutant, and heavy metal Cr(VI), an inorganic pollutant, to obtain a pollutant-resistant mixed microbial culture. Experiments were conducted with this culture to remove SNB and heavy metal. The optimum conditions, where the mixed bacterial culture removed the pollutants most effectively, were determined, showing that the highest capacity for removal took place at pH 8 with removal percentages 96.3% for Cr(VI) and 78.5% for SNB. In media with 50.4 mg/L SNB and 9.7 mg/L Cr(VI), the SNB removal was 87.3%, and the Cr(VI) removal was 96.6% at the end of the 7-day incubation period. The highest removal was observed with a biomass concentration of 8% (v/v) of mixed culture [50 mg/L SNB dye+25 mg/L Cr(VI)]. The removal was 100% for both Cr(VI) and the SNB dye. The bacteria with the highest removal were isolated and identified using 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis as Microbacterium oxydans and Leucobacter aridicollis. The role of various functional groups and the structures of the microorganisms that might be involved in the removal mechanisms were discussed using their FTIR spectra. This report is the first study that investigates a mixed bacterial culture and pure cultures (M. oxydans and L. aridicollis) isolated from that mixed culture, removing both SNB and Cr(VI) simultaneously.Ankara University [FYL-2023-2873]; Ankara University Research FundWe are grateful for the financial support provided by the Ankara University Research Fund under Project No. FYL-2023-2873

The Showcase for Women Leadership in Digitalization Era of the Workplace

    No full text
The concept of leadership is an important factor that affects the success of organizations. Digitalization and digital transformation have increased the importance of the concept of leadership in the business world. Digitalization is effective on communication and coordination and provides success in competition. Leaders should keep their leadership styles and digital knowledge up to date for corporate success. Among the characteristics that should be presented by a leader are effective communication, problem deconstruction skills, transfer of authority, and empathy. Although the concept of leadership is gender decoupled, differences arise between the distribution of male and female managers in the business world. Gender biases and social stereotypes still limit the number of women in senior leadership positions. As a solution to this situation, a gender quota is being implemented in some countries. In this chapter, the intersection between leadership, women's leadership, digitalization, and the impact of digitalization on women's leadership will be discussed. © 2024, IGI Global

Celik, Esref Ugur/0000-0001-9090-9346Using firm-level data from Turkiye, we investigate the effects of earthquakes on firms' balance sheets. We find that earthquakes increase firms' liabilities but have a smaller effect on firms' assets, both in magnitude and significance. Using surveys sent to the finance and/or accounting managers of the largest 100 firms in Turkiye we identify common themes in their perceptions. Our findings reveal a consensus among respondents attributing the increased liabilities to exchange rate depreciation and lower business activity following a disaster. Conversely, higher availability of external credit is associated with a decrease in liabilities. Our analysis also indicates that finance managers with higher educational attainment may be underestimating the effects of earthquakes.center dot The research presented in this article was not supported by any grants or other funding sources that could influence the outcomes.Social Science Citation Inde

The Cultural Dilemmas of Uneven and Combined Development (ucd): 'the Biggest Agony of the Turkish Spirit'

    No full text
Recent studies of international historical sociology have focused more on the interaction between the political and economic aspects of the world system compared to its cultural dimensions. In this article we want to address this lacuna with particular reference to the theory of Uneven and Combined Development (UCD here after). UCD is an attempt to develop a non-Eurocentric, non-linear, and historical understanding of international relations. It aims to provide a non-Eurocentric historiography and historical sociology that goes beyond binary oppositions of East and West, tradition and modernity, and emphasizes non-Western agency in shaping historical developments. The cultural implications of UCD has recently been revived in world literature and cultural studies. We seek to contribute to this research by illustrating how UCD can help us understand the cultural implications of societal interaction through the use of Turkish literature, notably Peyami Safa's work. We want to focus on the theme of the interaction between the West and the East in his work within the context of the theory of UCD as an example of how it manifests itself in the cultural field. Accordingly, the article is structured as follows. The first section discusses the key features of UCD as they relate to our topic, and the second section goes on to examine processes of Westernisation as they have occurred in Turkey and attempts to demonstrate how UCD is reflected in the literature of the period. The third section aims to show how the concept of UCD can help us better understand the implications of societal interaction in Peyami Safa's work by addressing the various issues that are raised in Justin Rosenberg's approach to analysing world literature. The final section concludes with general observations concerning the potential utility of UCD-based methodologies in constituting the foundation of non-Western IR theories

Ilgın, Hüseyin Emre/0000-0001-8033-7823; Aslantamer, Özlem Nur/0000-0001-7776-607XHigh-rise timber residential towers (>= eight-stories) represent a burgeoning and auspicious sector, predominantly due to their capability to provide significant ecological and financial advantages throughout their lifecycle. Like numerous other building types, spatial optimization in high-rise timber residential structures stands as a pivotal design factor essential for project viability. Presently, there exists no comprehensive investigation on space efficiency in such towers. This study analyzed data from 51 case studies to enhance understanding of the design considerations influencing space efficiency in high-rise timber residential towers. Key findings included (1) the average space efficiency within the examined cases was recorded at 83%, exhibiting variances ranging from 70% to 93% across different cases, (2) the average percentage of core area to gross floor area (GFA) was calculated at 10%, demonstrating fluctuations within the range of 4% to 21% across diverse scenarios, and (3) no notable distinction was observed in the effect of various core planning strategies on spatial efficiency when properly designed, and similar conclusions were drawn regarding building forms and structural materials. This research will aid in formulating design guidelines tailored for various stakeholders such as architectural designers involved in high-rise residential timber building developments

MENGÜASLAN, HİKMET/0000-0003-4836-5108This article explores the constitutive impact of the 'international' on the sociopolitical transformations in Syria and Libya through the lens of the theory of Uneven and Combined Development (UCD). The conventional and numerous critical analyses of Syrian and Libyan sociopolitical change suffer from a Eurocentric and stagist understanding of development. This paper argues that development problems can be better conceptualized with an interactive framework made possible by the UCD theory. In this context, we focus on how the expansion and consolidation of capitalism through the dynamics of UCD have concretely shaped the process of sociopolitical transformation in Syria and Libya to shed light on how the international and the local have articulated to produce the socioeconomic and political outcomes in these two states. We conclude by arguing that the theory of UCD provides an alternative conceptualization in explaining the specific development trajectories in both countries. The authors would like to thank the anonymous reviewers and editors of the journal for their valuable feedback and constructive comments on an earlier version of this article. The authors would like to thank the anonymous reviewers and editors of the journal for their valuable feedback and constructive comments on an earlier version of this article

2-Ag and Bone Marrow-Targeted Pcl Nanoparticles as Nanoplatforms for Hematopoietic Cell Line Mobilization

    No full text
Kose, Sevil/0000-0003-2188-9534BackgroundThe use of mobilizing agents for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is insufficient for an increasing number of patients. We previously reported lipid made endocannabinoid (eCB) ligands act on the human bone marrow (hBM) HSC migration in vitro, lacking long term stability to be therapeutic candidate. In this study, we hypothesized if a novel 2-AG-loaded polycaprolactone (PCL)-based nanoparticle delivery system that actively targets BM via phosphatidylserine (Ps) can be generated and validated.MethodsPCL nanoparticles were prepared by using the emulsion evaporation method and characterized by Zetasizer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The encapsulation efficiency and release profile of 2-AG were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The presence of cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) in HSCs and monocytes was detected by flow cytometry. Cell morphology and viability were assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM, and the WST-1 viability assay. The migration efficacy of the 2-AG and 2-AG-loaded nanoparticle delivery system on HSCs and HPSCs (TF-1a and TF-1) and monocytes (THP-1) was evaluated using a transwell migration assay.ResultsThe 140-225 nm PCL nanoparticles exhibited an increasing polydispersity index (PDI) after the addition of Ps and 2-AG, with a surface charge ranging from - 25 to -50 mV. The nanoparticles released up to 36% of 2-AG within the first 8 h. The 2-AG-Ps-PCL did not affect cellular viability compared to control on days 5 and 10. The HSCs and monocytes expressed CB1R and CB2R and revealed increased migration to media containing 1 mu M 2-AG-Ps-PCL compared to control. The migration rate of the HSCs toward monocytes incubated with 1 mu M 2-AG-Ps-PCL was higher than that of the monocytes of control. The 2-AG-Ps-PCL formulation provided a real time mobilization efficacy at 1 mu M dose and 8 h time window via a specific CBR agonism.ConclusionThe newly generated and validated 2-AG-loaded PCL nanoparticle delivery system can serve as a stable, long lasting, targeted mobilization agent for HSCs and as a candidate therapeutic to be included in HSC transplantation (HSCT) protocols following scale-up in vivo preclinical and subsequent clinical trials.Trkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arascedil;timath;rma KurumuThe authors declare that artificial intelligence is not used in this study.Science Citation Index Expande
