Scrutnet: a Deep Ensemble Network for Detecting Fake News in Online Text

    No full text
The expeditious propagation of fake news through online social media platforms has cropped up as a captious challenge, undermining the credibility of information sources and affecting public trust. Accurate detection of fake news is imperative to maintain the integrity of online content but is constrained by availability of data. This research aims to detect fake news from online articles by proposing a novel deep learning ensemble network capable of effectively discerning between genuine and fabricated news articles using limited data. We introduce ScrutNet, which leverages the synergistic capabilities of a bidirectional long short-term memory network and a convolutional neural network, which have been meticulously designed and fine-tuned for the task by us. This comprehensive ensemble classifier captures both sequential dependencies and local patterns within the textual data without requiring very large datasets like transformer based models. Through rigorous experimentation, we optimise the individual model parameters and ensemble strategy. The experimental results showcase the remarkable efficacy of ScrutNet in the detection of fake news, with an outstanding precision of 99.56%, 99.43% specificity, and an F1 score of 99.49% achieved on the partition test of the data set. Comparative analysis against state-of-the-art baselines demonstrates the superior performance of ScrutNet, establishing its prominence as a generalised and dependable fake news detection mechanism.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb(-1), were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the Z -> mu(-) mu(+) cross sections measured in the same events. Alginate-Based Cell Encapsulation Using Different Crosslinker Elements

    No full text
Alginate microcapsules are the most frequently used materials for cell transplantation. Different crosslinkers affect crosslinking affinity, which has a significant influence on microcapsule properties. The objective was to prepare in vitro microcapsules using calcium, barium, iron, manganese, nickel, and strontium as divalent cations to observe their potential for use in cell transplantation. Sodium alginate was added dropwise to the individually prepared crosslinkers to observe diffusion-based gelling. Alginate microcapsules were investigated regarding capsule stability, physiological properties, and cell viability. After 30 days of incubation, cell viability was greater than 90% for the cell-encapsulated microcapsules when crosslinked with CaCl2 and NiCl2. Viability decreased in the following order: CaCl2 > NiCl2 > BaCl2 > SrCl2 > MnCl2 > FeCl2. A compression test was performed to investigate the required force to deform 30% of microcapsules, and only MnCl2, FeCl2 (180 mM), and NiCl2 (50 mM) demonstrated higher resistance to the applied force than CaCl2. Except for the FeCl2 group, all cell-encapsulated microcapsules remained intact for 45 days. Potential sensitivities to CaCl2 during cell transplantation may compel alternative crosslinker usage, and our study revealed that NiCl2 and BaCl2 can be used as alternative crosslinkers to CaCl2 due to their high cell viability and consistent stability. © World Scientific Publishing Company.Science Citation Index Expande

Numerical Simulation of Combined Convective Heat Transfer in a Sinusoidal Cavity With Lid-Driven Cap Affected by Fractal Blocks

    No full text
Improving the thermal performance of equipment on large and small scales is one of the most important issues in engineering. In this numerical study, the flow and combined convection heat transfer in a two-dimensional (2D) sinusoidal cavity affected by the movement of indirect hot fluid flow are investigated using the finite volume method. By using water/silver nanofluid in volume fractions (φ) of 0 to 0.06 and using fractal surfaces in a 2D cavity with a lid-driven cap in Richardson numbers (Ri) 0 to10, an attempt is made to increase the heat transfer efficiency of the sinusoidal hot surface. The results of this research show that due to the increase in the convective heat transfer coefficient resulted from the strengthening of the fluid velocity, a significant decrease in the temperature of the hot surface is achieved. At Ri = 10, due to the slower movement of the cap and the full compliance of the fluid with the sinusoidal surface, the heat penetration in the fluid layers increases and the temperature graphs become more uniform. The flow circulation between the two hot and cold sources is affected by the density gradients in the cooling fluid and the movement of the cap can create a different temperature distribution. The fluid temperature distribution is also dependent on moving areas in the cavity. The placement of fluid on fractal surfaces is associated with extreme velocity changes. Due to the presence of viscosity and the formation of the velocity boundary layer, this behavior also affects the movement of the fluid layers to the solid surface areas. The highest value of the Nusselt number (Nu) is gained during fluid contact with a cold lid-driven cap on the left side of the cavity. As the fluid moves further on the surfaces of the moving cavity, the hot fluid gradually exchanges its energy with the cavity cover and the fluid cools down. The presence of solid nanoparticles in a higher φ has a significant effect on reducing the temperature of the hot surface, which is due to the increase in the thermal conductivity of the cooling fluid. Compared to the base fluid, this behavior at φ = 0.06 has created a higher thermal efficiency increase of about 15 %. The lowest shear stress is related to the areas of fluid separation on the curved surface. In all investigated cases, the increase of φ can increase the average shear stress between 35 % and 43 % in different Ri. © 202

Elde edilen veriler Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0 ve AMOS 24 programları kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which leads to severe neurological damage when left untreated. One in every 3,500-4,000 live-born babies in Turkey has PKU. Thanks to newborn screening programs, the disease is detected at an early stage. Treatment includes a lifelong low-protein diet, specially formulated foods and regular phenylalanine measurements. In this study, the eating behaviors of adult individuals with PKU, their dietary adaptation processes and the factors they encounter in this process were evaluated. In addition, the effects of individual and environmental factors on compliance and disordered eating behaviors were examined and the findings obtained were aimed to contribute to the treatment process. This study was conducted as a descriptive study and the participants were individuals with PKU aged 18 years and older who were reached through the PKU Family Association in Turkey. Data were collected through questionnaires added to the online environment via Google Form. Data were collected using a two-part structured questionnaire, the Diet Satisfaction Scale (DSS) and the Three-Factor Eating Scale (TFEQ-R21). The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0 and AMOS 24 programs. In the analysis process, descriptive statistics as well as correlation and regression analyses were applied to evaluate the relationships between variables. The mean age of the individuals diagnosed with PKU who participated in the study was 26.07 ± 5.49 years and 69.2% were female. The mean dietary satisfaction was found to be 2.82 ± 0.78; satisfaction was found to be significantly higher in individuals who thought that they had an adequate and balanced diet (p<0.05) and lower in those who smuggled prohibited foods (p<0.05). 70.8% of the participants stated that they could not allocate a budget for a low-protein diet and the satisfaction score of this group was significantly lower (p<0.05). The rate of those who consumed forbidden foods was 63.1% and the most common reason was 'craving' (48.8%); the satisfaction score of these individuals was 2.53, while it was 3.33 in those who did not consume forbidden foods (p<0.01). The total score of the TFEQ-R21 was 39.47 ± 19.71 and the cognitive restraint subscale was 47.44 ± 23.82. Emotional eating and cognitive restraint scores were significantly higher in female subjects compared to male subjects (p<0.05). The findings of this study reveal that adult individuals with PKU face various difficulties in the process of adaptation to a low-protein diet and this situation has significant effects on eating behaviors. Economic inadequacy, lack of information, limited variety of products, and limited opportunities for appropriate nutrition in social settings are the main factors that negatively affect dietary adherence. The higher levels of emotional eating and cognitive restraint in women and obese individuals indicate that these groups need more specialized support. These results indicate that individual and environmental factors should be addressed holistically in PKU management. In order to increase the sustainability of treatment, community-based awareness activities, strengthening the education of families and individuals, and facilitating access to medical nutrition products are of great importance. In addition, increasing the variety of low-protein products and providing practical alternatives that can be consumed in social settings will support dietary adherence. Providing individuals with PKU with nutrition plans tailored to age, social conditions and individual needs makes the role of dietitians critical, along with education programs for families and individuals. Increasing psychosocial support and developing individualized interventions for eating behaviors will strengthen dietary compliance and participation in social life. In future studies, the use of larger sample groups and multicenter designs will increase the generalizability and reliability of the findings

This study examines the relationships between green finance practices, financial development, economic growth, renewable energy investments and CO₂ emissions in the banking sector in BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and Türkiye. The effectiveness of financial mechanisms to reduce environmental risks in line with sustainable development goals on a global scale is increasingly gaining importance. In this context, data sets covering the period 1990-2021 for selected countries were used in the study. The research has revealed both short-term and long-term effects in detail through multiple regression analysis, ADF and PP unit root tests, Johansen cointegration test, VAR, variance decomposition, impulse-response analysis as well as FMOLS, DOLS, CCR and ARDL methods. The findings show that economic growth generally increases CO₂ emissions in BRICS countries and Türkiye, whereas renewable energy use makes significant contributions to reducing emissions. The effects of banking sector development and financial development vary from country to country, and the emission-reducing effect of these variables is particularly striking in Türkiye and India. In addition, the study tests the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis on a country basis and aims to fill the gap in the literature in terms of evaluating the role of the financial system on environmental sustainability in the context of green finance. In this respect, it provides guiding findings for policy makers on how sustainable development strategies can be supported by financial instruments, and emphasizes the need to expand green financing mechanisms and strengthen regulations for environmental sustainability in the financial system

Determination of Ecological Settlement Criteria in Urban Renewal Areas and Interpretation Within the Scope of Zoning Plan: Akpınar Neighborhood Sancaktepe

    No full text
Anahtar Kelimeler: Kentsel Yenileme, Ekolojik Planlama, Ekolojik Yerleşim Kriterleri, Sancaktepe/Akpınar Mahallesi Kentsel DönüşümüToday, environmental problems are increasing their impact on a global scale and the construction sector stands out as one of the main sources of these problems. Especially with rapid urbanization processes, interference with nature has increased, pressure on natural resources has intensified and environmental degradation has gained momentum. In this context, the direct and indirect negative impacts of construction activities on the environment have become one of the important factors contributing to the deepening of the climate crisis. In this study, planning and design approaches that can minimize environmental damages in line with ecological principles in the process of renewal of urban spaces have been investigated; in particular, this issue has been concretized in the case of Akpınar Neighborhood in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul, Turkey. This thesis titled 'Determination of Ecological Settlement Criteria in Urban Renewal Areas and Interpretation within the Scope of Zoning Plan: Akpınar Mahallesi - Sancaktepe' consists of five main chapters. In the first chapter, the main purpose, scope, research questions and the hypothesis developed in this direction are presented. At the same time, the methodological framework to be followed in this chapter is detailed and information on both theoretical and applied research steps is given. In the second part, within the scope of the literature review, the concepts of 'urban renewal' and 'ecological urban renewal' are discussed in terms of their historical development, theoretical background and place in the planning discipline; different approaches to these concepts are examined comparatively. In addition, the projects carried out in Turin in Italy, Dortmund in Germany and Zagreb in Croatia as prominent case studies on ecological renewal in the international context are analyzed in detail. In the third chapter, the basic criteria for planning ecological settlements are identified and how these criteria can be integrated into the urban planning process is discussed comprehensively. In this context, multidimensional criteria such as sustainable management of green areas, energy efficiency principles, protection and management of water resources, waste separation and recycling processes, environmental compatibility and accessibility of transportation systems, and integration of social participation into planning processes are analyzed. In this section, both the theoretical framework and practical examples are utilized to increase the applicability of these criteria. The fourth chapter focuses on the Akpınar neighborhood of Sancaktepe district, which is the application area of the study. In this neighborhood, a pilot project was developed in the area designated as a transformation area by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and the current situation of the area was analyzed in detail. This area, which became idle with the relocation of industrial uses outside the city, was reconsidered within the scope of ecological renewal criteria and tried to be transformed into a sustainable settlement model. First of all, various environmental analyses were carried out throughout the neighborhood. In this context; spatial evaluations were made in the light of data such as geological structure, floor number distribution, occupancy-vacancy rates, physical condition of the existing building stock. The main problems identified as a result of the field surveys were shaped around issues such as unplanned construction in the stream bed, squatting tendencies and lack of qualified green areas. Within the scope of the field study, zoning plan data for the selected region were analyzed and planning justifications were put forward. In this process, the proposals developed in line with ecological settlement criteria were systematically progressed from upper to lower scales within the planning hierarchy. The proposed settlement plan was then digitally modeled using digital modeling and simulation tools such as Rhino, SketchUp and DesignBuilder, and environmental performance assessments such as insolation analysis, wind directions, shadow effect and energy consumption scenarios were made through these models. In addition, some building examples of the existing settlement texture were also modeled and comparative analyses were carried out with the proposed settlement scenario. Thus, the contributions that the proposed ecological settlement arrangement can provide to the city are interpreted in line with objective data. In the fifth and final chapter, all the study steps carried out within the scope of the thesis are summarized in general terms and various suggestions are developed for future studies in similar areas in line with the findings. This chapter contains not only the results of the current research, but also evaluations that can shed light on the future applications of sustainable urban regeneration and ecological settlement approaches. This thesis study is an artistic proficiency thesis on the musical culture and musical identity of the Çamşıhı Region, under the title 'Çamşıhı Dialect in the Context of Musical Performances and Identity Indicators'. In this thesis, answers to the following questions were sought. What role do Çamşıhı dialect musical performances play in the construction of social identities, and how do phonetic, spectrum and spectrogram analysis of music reveal these identity representations? Although there have been various studies on the bard tradition of Çamşıhı region in the literature, it has been determined that there are not enough resources and research on Çamşıhı music culture and Çamşıhı Dialect in general. The need to put the features related to this tradition, which continues its continuity in oral culture, into writing was the most important factor affecting the preparation of the thesis. In the process of explaining and understanding oral culture through written text, it has been a process carried out by paying attention to the analysis of the dialect features used in the region and the sound techniques used in vocal, in order to understand musical performance and its effects on social identity. By phonetically examining the data obtained in the field research and performing spectrogram analysis, it is aimed to understand the dynamics of the cultural context as well as to contribute to the creation of a written literature with concrete representations. In this way, it becomes possible to understand the performance and identity construction of music in the social context. the context of listener, place, time and belonging within the theoretical framework of Performance Theory and identity theories. The differences of Çamşıhı region's music from other regional music and its special performance techniques were evaluated in the context of cultural identity. The unique musical structures of the region, local melodic patterns, and musical performance examples obtained during field research in the region reveal the special style and attitude of the region, both in vocal performance and instrumentalperformance. Among the Turkish Folk Music forms both encountered during field research and recorded, long havas are commonly encountered in the Çamşıhı Region. In addition to the patterned melodies that show the characteristic features of the region, it is observed that the lyric patterns incorporated into the melodies reflect the musical performance and musical identity of the region. It is seen that the vocal performances of the long havas mentioned have the feature that best reflects the stylistic and attitude characteristics of the region.Similarly, the 'sarma' technique used during instrument performance (baglama) is one of the important elements reflecting the musical identity of the region. In the study using field research methodology, the above-mentioned findings were obtained through ethnography, netnography techniques and the interview, on-site observation and participant observation methods included in these techniques
