Polarisation and Youth in Turkey: Young People as Gatekeepers or Challengers of Polarisation?
Amid global trends of increased polarisation and Turkey's deep-seated ethnic, religious, and cultural cleavages, polarisation poses significant risks to democratic sustainability in Turkey. This study, leveraging a 2017 national survey and in-depth interviews with young people during a pivotal shift to a presidential regime, explores whether youth remain divided by political attitudes and cultural values or challenge entrenched divisions in society. We found that both sociocultural identities (being religious or secular) and partisan identities (supporting the ruling powers or the opposition) create issue-based polarisation among youth. Contrary to expectations, however, this polarisation does not extend to an affective one, suggesting a complex, nuanced landscape of political engagement and potential for bridging divides.This work was supported by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Turkey.Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Turke

Exploring Female Consumers' Attitudes Toward Green Cosmetics
As consumers' interest in green cosmetics and their desire for the presence of natural, eco-friendly ingredients in cosmetic products increase, the green cosmetics market has also grown increasingly. The aim of this study is to examine female consumers' attitudes towards green cosmetics with a qualitative approach. Research data was collected by in- depth interview method and analysed by content analysis. Within the scope of the study, first of all, the packaging preferences of the participants in cosmetic products were examined and how the participants defined green cosmetics was investigated. Then, the themes that positively and negatively affected the participants' attitudes towards green cosmetics were revealed. According to the study results, limited product availability, perception of high price, scepticism, and attitude-behavior gap negatively affect attitudes, while WOM [word of mouth] and social media, emotional value, health consciousness, and price-value image positively affect attitudes. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2024
Examining Factors Influencing Turkish Jewish Attitudes Towards the Armenian Genocide
Nefes, Turkay Salim/0000-0002-0294-2064KAYMAK, OZGUR/0000-0001-6578-7850The most prominent issue influencing Turkish-Armenian relations is the international recognition of the Armenian genocide. However, there is a notable absence of empirical analyses regarding the perceptions of the genocide among the Turkish population. This study aims to fill this scholarly gap by exploring, for the first time, the perspectives of Turkish Jews. It analyses evidence collected from interviews conducted with 14 Turkish Jews, utilising Stanley Cohen's (2001) theoretical framework, which aids in delineating significant factors by a categorisation of types of acceptance and denial. The findings highlight a diversity of responses linked to political attitudes, which can be broadly categorised into Kayades and Avlaremoz mindsets. They also show that Turkish Jews' views on the Holocaust influence how they perceive the Armenian genocide. Additionally, the results indicate that Cohen's approach is useful in explaining non-denying responses. In conclusion, the study argues that Turkish Jews' perspectives appear to be strongly related to their stance towards the Turkish state and the Holocaust.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacin [254570]; Gulbenkian Foundation research grant [RYC2018-023919-I]; Ramon y Cajal Research grantThis research was made possible by a Gulbenkian Foundation research grant (ref: 254570). Supporting Prospective Mathematics Teachers in Noticing Students' Proportional Reasoning
This study investigates the effect of a professional development program designed to develop prospective mathematics teachers' ability to notice students' proportional reasoning. It examines how those teachers attended to student thinking, how they interpreted it, and how they decided to respond. Sixteen prospective teachers (PSTs) at a state university participated in a seven-week online professional development (PD) program. We provided participants with a research-based framework for proportional reasoning and engaged them in various ways via interviews with middle school students. They also wrote a reflection paper and received feedback. Combining multiple elements with interviewing was a unique feature of this program. The improvement in participants' noticing skills was statistically significant. Specifically, in the post-assessment, the participants paid attention to most of the mathematical details of the students' strategies, provided interpretations supported by conceptual underpinnings and evidence, and made research-based student-oriented decisions that focused on key issues. Implications for future teacher education practices and suggestions for further research are provided.Idot;stanbul Aydimath;n University [2021/09]This research was partly supported by ; Idot;stanbul Ayd ; imath;n University Scientific Research Projects funding under Grant Number 2021/09
Drivers and Barriers Influencing Consumers' Intention To Purchase Cosmetics With Refillable Packaging
In recent years, conscious consumers have become an important segment of the market. In the cosmetics industry, green products are also at the forefront. The refillable packaging is a significant step in this direction. The aim of this study is to identify the drivers and barriers that affect the intention to purchase cosmetics with refillable packaging. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 Generation Z women. Content analysis was used to identify themes, categories and subcategories in the transcripts. According to the results, the categories that drive consumers to purchase cosmetic products with refillable packaging include peer influence, marketing communication, social media, perceived benefits, brand reputation, environmental consciousness and knowledge, anticipated positive emotions, product availability and variety. The barriers identified include lack of awareness and knowledge, high prices, influencer effect, low perceived consumer effectiveness, consumers' concerns about greenwashing, product quality and status concerns, health concerns and operational barriers. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of consumers' intentions to purchase refillable packaging. This study explains the drivers and barriers that affect the intention to purchase cosmetics with refillable packaging. The results indicate that peer influence, marketing communication, social media, perceived benefits, brand reputation, environmental consciousness and knowledge, anticipated positive emotions, product availability and variety are the drivers. On the other hand, lack of awareness and knowledge, high prices, influencer effect, low perceived consumer effectiveness, consumers' concerns about greenwashing, product quality and status concerns, health concerns and operational barriers were found as barriers.imag
Influence of Local Soil Conditions on Damages in Kahramanmaras During the 2023 Turkey Earthquake
The 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake affected an area of 99000 km2 on Turkish side where two million people were left without home. The PGA values which have been recorded by various stations show values as high as 1.2g as well as relatively spectacular maximum vertical component (PGV). The focus of the paper is to focus on a noticeable phenomenon in the city of Kahramanmaras where, on one hand, almost all buildings in the historical centre have either collapsed or been severely damaged by the two earthquakes (Pazarcik at 4:17 AM and Elbistan at 1:24 PM, respectively) of February 6th 2023, whereas, on the other hand, structures in the surrounding areas have significantly less damage. Moreover, it is evident from seismic stations’ recordings that impact (in terms of PGA, acceleration and velocity time histories) of first major shock (M7.7 Pazarcik) is higher than the one of the second major shock (M7.6 Elbistan) at similar magnitude and comparable distance to the epicenter. For the sake of investigating further the influence of local soil conditions as possible reason for the observed events shear wave velocity and soil deposit fundamental frequency have been measured in two spots – first, where multiple collapsed structures were detected and second, a neighbouring area with mostly standing buildings. Results indicate that the on-site measurement of only S-waves might lead to wrong assumptions in terms of microseismical zonation and further considerations shall be accounted. Furthermore, some comments and preliminary assumptions regarding seismic motion amplification effects have been presented in the study. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025

Understanding the Psychological and Financial Correlates for Consumer Credit Use;
This study investigated the behavioural and cognitive predictors of consumer credit usage to develop a behavioural credit risk assessment procedure for a factoring company. Participants completed surveys measuring personality traits, self-esteem, material and monetary values, compulsive and impulsive buying tendencies, self-control, and impulsiveness. Financial surveys also assessed financial literacy and knowledge of financial concepts. The results indicated that extraversion, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and experiential self-control were significant predictors of consumer credit usage. These findings suggest that a finance company can use these personality traits and financial characteristics to develop a more accurate and effective credit risk assessment procedure, such as psychometric tests. © 2024, Sosyoekonomi Society.
