Prediction of the Sound Absorption Performance of Porous Samples Including Cellulose Fiber-Based Structures
No full textThe mathematical models for predicting the sound absorption coefficients (SACs) of porous samples are first presented, then they are used to predict the SACs of some porous structures, and their performances are evaluated. First of all, the parameters needed for the calculation of the SACs of a porous sample are briefly introduced. After that, the mathematical models for the prediction of acoustic properties are presented. These models include (i) simple empirical models such as Delany-Bazley and its modified versions, (ii) rigid-frame models such as Johnson-Champoux-Allard and Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge, and (iii) deformable-frame models such as Biot-Allard. After that, the estimation of the parameters needed in the mathematical models is presented. Then, the aforementioned models are used to predict the SACs of some porous samples including cellulose fiber-based structures, and their performances are evaluated in detail. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Multinational Data Show That Conspiracy Beliefs Are Associated With the Perception (and Reality) of Poor National Economic Performance
No full textWhile a great deal is known about the individual difference factors associated with conspiracy beliefs, much less is known about the country-level factors that shape people's willingness to believe conspiracy theories. In the current article we discuss the possibility that willingness to believe conspiracy theories might be shaped by the perception (and reality) of poor economic performance at the national level. To test this notion, we surveyed 6723 participants from 36 countries. In line with predictions, propensity to believe conspiracy theories was negatively associated with perceptions of current and future national economic vitality. Furthermore, countries with higher GDP per capita tended to have lower belief in conspiracy theories. The data suggest that conspiracy beliefs are not just caused by intrapsychic factors but are also shaped by difficult economic circumstances for which distrust might have a rational basis
Turkish Parliamentary Debates About the International Recognition of the Armenian Genocide: Development and Variations in the Official Denialism
No full textThe main source of animosity in modern Turkish–Armenian relations is the debate on the international recognition of the Armenian genocide. To provide an evidence-based and thorough perspective on the Turkish political stance in this discussion, this article explores all the relevant speeches in Turkish parliamentary records. It pays particular attention to political parties’ stances, the historical evolution of the debate, and the significance of the individual profiles of parliamentarians who contributed to the discussion. The findings show that most political parties in Turkey articulated versions of denial, except for a few marginal anti-denial voices. The study concludes that while political parties’ ideological orientations predominantly shape the Turkish debate on the international recognition of the Armenian genocide, historical contexts, local memories, and the individual backgrounds of parliamentarians seem to inspire minor variations in their tones. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor ; Francis Group
Metabolic Flows of Water in İstanbul in the Nineteenth Century: Tap Water, Waste, and Sanitation

To achieve this, unfolding the urban metabolism of cities through metabolic flows from the perspective of urban political ecology will grow increasingly essential in the future. This paper aims to explore the concept of urban political ecology as a perspective for understanding emergence of a new urban metabolism in İstanbul in the nineteenth century through metabolic flows of water. The context of “metabolic” emphasizes labor as an agent for the very production of nature as urbanized nature through tap water, waste, and sanitation. It shows the transition and the conflict between the labor-intensive urban metabolism and capital-intensive urban metabolism of İstanbul, which started in the nineteenth century. The metabolic flows of water in terms of infrastructure were affected by the first impacts of foreign capital investments and capitalist relations

Vibration of Locally Cracked Pre-Loaded Parabolic Arches
No full textWe study linear dynamics of an initially parabolic arch deformed by a uniform ‘dead’ load. The arch is seen as a fully deformable one-dimensional continuum with rigid cross-sections, one of which suffers from a small local crack at its boundary. The crack is simulated by springs, the stiffnesses of which are evaluated via stress intensity factors. By two first-order perturbations we investigate a non-trivial equilibrium adjacent to the reference configuration and small vibration superposed on it. The modulation of the initial load on the natural angular frequencies and its consequences on damage detection is described and commented. It turns out that neglecting the initial load, recalling for actual ‘dead’ structural actions, can be misleading in damage identification, while its inclusion leads to better results

Blockchain Technology and Sustainability in Supply Chains and a Closer Look at Different Industries: a Mixed Method Approach
No full textBackground: This study presents a comprehensive review of blockchain technology with a sustainability orientation in supply chains and logistics. Methods: The publications are extracted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, comprising 552 publications between 2017 and 2022. Several bibliometric laws and techniques, namely three-field analysis, Bradford’s Law, Lotka’s Law, and thematic maps, are applied in R with the bibliometrix package. Content analysis is also carried out based on 185 publications to appreciate the industry-based view of the field. Results: The bibliometric results indicate that this field is on the rise. Authors, sources, affiliations, countries, keywords, and their relationships are also addressed. The findings of the content analysis and thematic maps reveal that some of the most highlighted themes in the literature include traceability, COVID-19, the internet of things, and Industry 4.0. The most popular industry in this field is discovered to be food and agriculture. Conclusions: This paper contributes to the still relatively scarce literature on how blockchain technology fosters sustainable supply chains and logistics, providing a closer look at blockchain use, methodologies, and future directions for different industries concerning food, agriculture, fashion, textile and apparel, manufacturing, automotive, maritime and shipping, healthcare and pharmaceutical, mining and mineral, and energy. © 2022 by the authors
18 - Acoustic and Mechanical Properties of Biofibers and Their Composites
No full textIn this study, the acoustic and mechanical properties of many biofibers and their composites are presented. First, the sound absorption coefficients and transmission losses of commonly used natural fibers and their composites are presented, by clearly reporting the thickness of the samples, for three different frequency ranges (500 Hz: low, 500–2000 Hz: medium, and >2000 Hz: high). In addition, the sound absorption coefficients (for low- and medium-frequency ranges) and noise reduction coefficients of some 40-cm-thick samples are overlaid in order to directly compare their performances. Second, the physical properties, such as the density, diameter, and length of biofibers, and mechanical properties, such as the damping (or loss factor) and Young’s modulus of biofibers and their composites, are presented in detail. For comparison purposes, the acoustic and mechanical properties of some conventional materials, such as carbon and glass fibers, are included in the tables and figures. Finally, the effects of some parameters, such as pretreatment, fiber diameter, fiber/matrix ratio, moisture content, manufacturing and machining parameters/techniques, and measurement conditions/methods, on the acoustic and mechanical properties of natural materials are presented. Furthermore, current applications and potential usage areas of natural fibers are briefly discussed
