Mobilising Youth for Elections: Electoral Inclusion of Youth in Turkey Under Competitive Authoritarianism

    No full text
Scholars have paid scant attention to how state-society relations are shaped in contexts where democratic and authoritarian institutions co-exist under new forms of authoritarianism. Furthermore, the realm of youth citizenship in such regimes is a nascent area warranting deeper exploration. This study draws on the case of Turkey to address these gaps by investigating why political parties, which previously marginalised young voters, have fervently mobilised youth during elections that paradoxically coincided with the process of autocratisation. We employ a content analysis of party programmes, election manifestos, and social media campaign content of major political parties, as well as secondary sources on Turkish and youth politics spanning from 1983 to 2023, to address this puzzle. Our analysis unveils three key findings. Firstly, transformative events such as the Gezi Park Protests and digital activism have invigorated youth political involvement, compelling both government and opposition parties to prioritise youth electoral engagement. Secondly, the shift from a parliamentary to a presidential system has heightened political parties' focus on securing the youth vote to win elections. Lastly, political parties strive to align youth political values with their own ideologies, and the process of election campaigning provides ample opportunities for such a goal.A previous version of this paper was presented at the 'Challenging Social and Cultural Transformation: Gender and Youth Policies and Activism in New Authoritarian Regimes' workshop organised by the Center for Comparative Research on Democracy, Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin, in person, on May 28, 2022. Where Should I Search Next? Messages Embedded in Storybooks Influence Children's Strategic Exploration in Turkey and the United States

Kiefer, Sarah/0000-0002-7677-5844Despite the vital role of curiosity-driven exploration in learning, our understanding of how to enhance children's curiosity remains limited. Here, we tested whether hearing a strategic curiosity story with curiosity-promoting themes (e.g., strategically approaching uncertainty, adapting flexibly to new information) versus a control story with traditional pedagogical themes (e.g., following rules, learning from others) would influence children's strategic exploration across two cultures. Three- to 6-year-olds from the United States (N = 138) and Turkey (N = 88) were randomly assigned to hear one of these stories over Zoom, before playing a game in which they searched for sea creatures across five fish tanks. All tanks had the same number of hiding spots but varied in the number of creatures they contained. Time was limited and children could not return to prior tanks, pushing them to allocate search effort strategically. Results indicated that across both countries, children in the strategic curiosity condition explored the virtual "aquarium" more broadly; they moved through tanks more rapidly than children in the control condition and were more likely to explore all five tanks before time ran out. Children in the strategic curiosity condition also showed relatively more strategic search, adapting their search based on the likelihood of finding creatures in each tank. While further research is needed to pinpoint which elements of our stories produced differences in search behavior and whether they did so by enhancing or inhibiting children's strategic exploration, storybooks appear to be a promising method for shaping children's exploration across multiple countries.National Science Foundation CAREER Grant [BCS 2047194]; MEF UniversityThis research was funded by a National Science Foundation CAREER Grant awarded to Kelsey Lucca ("Cultivating " Cultivating Curiosity to Promote Learning and Discovery," " BCS 2047194) and an institutional grant awarded to Hilal en by MEF University. This master's thesis is prepared for submission to MEF University Institute of Social Sciences. The subject of the thesis is defined as the 'Subrogation Action of Cargo Insurer as Legal Successor Liable for Damage in Sea Cargo Transportation against the Carrier.' In the first chapter of the study, the legal successorship regulated in the Turkish Law of Obligations is examined. Through this examination, the concept of successorship is scrutinized, and the distinctions between similar concepts such as the right of recourse and assignment of receivables are elucidated. This chapter also provides a detailed overview of the legal successorship of the insurer as regulated in Article 1472 of the Turkish Commercial Code No. 6102. The second chapter focuses on the conditions of the legal successorship of the insurer, particularly the conditions of the cargo insurer's legal successorship. This section thoroughly explains the circumstances under which the cargo insurer will legally succeed to the rights of the insured. The third chapter defines the carriage contract, examining the liability of the carrier. Emphasis is placed on the carrier's responsibility for the loss, damage, and late delivery of the transported cargo, clarifying the conditions under which the cargo insurer can seek recourse against the carrier. This chapter also evaluates both absolute and probable cases of carrier non-liability, stipulating that the cargo insurer cannot file a recourse lawsuit against the carrier in these instances. The final chapter of the study scrutinizes the recourse lawsuit that the cargo insurer would file against the carrier liable for damages, providing a detailed explanation of the procedural aspects of the lawsuit. This section highlights the nature, limits, legal grounds, subject matter, competent court, burden of proof, objections and defenses, interest, and statute of limitations of the recourse lawsuit.Bu yüksek lisans tezi çalışması MEF Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü'ne sunulmak üzere hazırlanmıştır. This study was conducted to explore how the brain processes decisions about identity, employing event-related potentials (ERPs) as a measure. The aim was to ascertain if the EEG/ERP technique could be used to monitor the cognitive processing of identity judgments as they happen. The investigation focused on comparing two groups of statements: those that used the concept of 'same' and those that used 'different'. The researchers hypothesized that there would be notable differences in the ERPs, particularly around the 400-millisecond mark, correlating with the reaction time disparities observed behaviorally. The ERP data revealed that the 'different' statements generated a unique N400 response when contrasted with the 'same' statements, implying that the participants' cognitive responses to these two types of judgments were not the same
