    No full text

Universal Functions with Ekman Spiral and Monin–Obukhov Surface Layers

    No full text
International audienceToday, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used for atmospheric dispersion at building scale. This type of simulation requires boundary conditions for wind, turbulence, and temperature. A classical way of imposing representative flow at open boundaries is to derive (universal) functions corresponding to idealised situations (e.g. constant shear stress, constant heat flux, such as in the Monin–Obukhov theory). In this paper, we first propose an analysis of universal functions for the surface layer and compare them to a 5-year data base of measurement on the SIRTA observatory (France). The conclusion is that these functions are in good agreement with the experimental data for moderate ratios of ζ\zeta (distance to the ground divided by Obukhov length), but most of them do not fulfil asymptotic behaviours in the very stable or convective limit. We also compare the measurements with the extensions proposed by Gryning et al. (Bound Layer Meteorol 124(2):251–268, 2007), which take into account the height of the atmospheric boundary layer. Then, following the work of Nieuwstadt (Noct Bound Layer J Atmos Sci 41(14):2202–2216, 1984. https://doi.org/10.1175/1520-0469(1984)041ltlt2202:TTSOTSgtgt2.0.CO;2 ), we propose universal functions able to reproduce the Ekman spiral and consistent with moment-turbulence closures for stably stratified atmospheres

Bridging the conceptual gap between workers and data-scientists' needs in the design process of a GenAI-based tool: an ergonomics intervention for an ombudsman's team

    No full text
International audienceWith ‘Generative Artificial Intelligence’ (GenAI), a new momentum has swept public opinion and, as with the Times front page on 27 February 2023, which describes an ‘arms race’ among major companies. While the GenAI in the workplace is new, the few studies suggest several benefits of such systems in work contexts. However, these results focus on the quantitative indicators, and further literature on the implementation of generative AI systems at work is still scarce. In this context, it is important to specify how to integrate a GenAI-based tool into an existing socio-technical organisation, as such integration always deeply transforms the employees’ activity. In this paper, we discuss the human-centred design of GenAI-based tools on the basis of an ergonomics intervention for the Ombudsman's team of an energy utility company. We explore how a participatory design approach – grounded in the preliminary analysis of the work – can help inform the development of a GenAI-based tool. We discuss the relevance of this methodology and the intermediary role of the ergonomists, given the dual challenge that end-users often lack a comprehensive understanding of GenAI's possibilities and potential applications, while data-scientists responsible for developing such tools are not trained to analyse complex work activities, which is a necessary step for selecting and training the appropriate AI models

    No full text

Poster: A microarchitectural signals analysis platform to craft Hardware Security Counters

    No full text
International audienceDetecting malicious software or hardware behavior during the operation of a computer system requires observables from one or more abstraction layers of the system. However, this abstraction tends to limit the ability to detect behavioral deviations, especially for attack classes that exploit vulnerabilities very close to the target hardware. Conversely, too low a level of abstraction tends to significantly increase the complexity of the system model, and therefore poses a number of difficulties for the extraction and selection of relevant observables for a given class of attack. In particular, processor performance counters have been used as an indirect means of observing microarchitecture behavior and detecting software attempting to exploit hardware vulnerabilities. In order to improve the various detection methods, we propose the construction of hardware metrics designed from the outset for security, by studying the correlation between signals from the microarchitecture and the various classes of attack in the literature, targeting both usual and industrial systems. By extension, this work aims to detect attacks originating from hardware Trojans, the latter having the effect of changing the behavior of a given microarchitecture

High-fidelity simulation of developing mixed convection in a buoyancy-aided vertical pipe flow

    No full text
International audienceA high-fidelity simulation of buoyancy-assisted mixed convection in a turbulent pipe flow is performed to investigate the spatial transition from the forced to the mixed convection regime. The configuration is representative of pressurised water in industrial applications (P ≈ 10^7 Pa and T ≈ 400 K), with a Reynolds number, a Prandtl number and a Richardson number of 7495, 1.412 and 5.060, respectively, based on the pipe diameter, the mass flow rate and the imposed heat flux. The thermal entry length is relatively long: skin friction and Nusselt number reach fully developed values after 70 diameters. The development zone shows a complex behaviour with a partial relaminarisation and a turbulence redevelopment associated with strong temperature fluctuations. These phenomena can be observed for the first time thanks to the use of a very long computational domain based on inflow/outflow boundary conditions with a realistic turbulence injection at the inlet

Blowup of solutions for compressible viscoelastic fluid

International audienceWe prove finite-time blowup of classical solutions for the compressible Upper Convective Maxwell (UCM) viscoelastic fluid system. By establishing a key energy identity and adapting Sideris' method for compressible flows, we derive a Riccati-type inequality for a momentum functional. For initial data with compactly supported perturbations satisfying a sufficiently large condition, all classical solutions lose regularity in finite time. This constitutes the first rigorous blowup result for multidimensional compressible viscoelastic fluids.

Numerical modelling of nearshore wave transformation, breaking and overtopping of coastal protections with the enhanced Serre-Green–Naghdi equations

    No full text
International audienceAdmissible average overtopping discharges in given storm conditions are typically used to design coastal protections, in particular dykes or breakwaters. These discharges are usually estimated using semi-empirical formulas relying on wave conditions at the toe of the structure. These formulas, unfortunately, only work for simple configurations, invariant alongshore, and can be insufficient for complex sea states. Therefore, numerical modelling could be a more flexible alternative for estimating these discharges. This work presents the development and validation of a Boussinesq-type numerical model solving the fully-nonlinear weakly-dispersive enhanced Serre-Green-Naghdi equations for the simulation of random wave overtopping over impermeable structures in one horizontal dimension. Wave breaking is modelled with an eddy viscosity approach based on the turbulent kinetic energy, which is robust and accurate at describing energy dissipation in the surf zone. Two distinct experimental datasets, with 184 trials in total and very dissimilar wave conditions and foreshore seabed profiles, are used to validate the model regarding wave propagation, shoaling, breaking and overtopping. Both unimodal and bimodal sea states are considered. Average overtopping discharges in configurations with deep and very shallow foreshores, as well as for breaking and non-breaking waves, are well reproduced by the model. For instance, typical mean relative errors on the simulated mean overtopping rates are found to lie within ±20% compared with the measurements, at least for the largest discharges of the considered campaigns. The scatter of simulated discharges is somewhat higher for lower discharges, but the results remain in an acceptable range

    No full text
