Study and mitigation of moisture-induced degradation in SHJ modules by modifying cell structure

    No full text
International audienceSilicon heterojunction (SHJ) modules are known for their high efficiency and are expected to gain significant market share in the coming years. In terms of reliability, SHJ technology can be sensitive to moisture-induced degradation and sodium-induced degradation from sodium ions released from the glass. In these degradation mechanisms, the different layers of the SHJ cell structure could play an important role that needs to be understood. This work investigates the moisture-induced degradation in SHJ modules under damp heat (DH) by varying the cell structure with different types and thicknesses of transparent conductive oxide (TCO). Due to the migration of sodium ions, the thinner the TCO layer, the higher the degradation induced. The protective effect of dielectric capping layers is also investigated, allowing at the same time to reduce the indium consumption, which is a crucial issue for SHJ cells. These layers provide protection against degradation. Finally, a schematic model is proposed to summarize the degradation mechanisms, including the effect of cell structure on them

    No full text

Small Water Impoundments Have Local and Longitudinal Impacts on Carbon Cycling Along a River Network

    No full text
International audienceDamming may be one of the most significant anthropogenic modifications fragmenting river networks. Damming alters the transport and processing of coarse particulate organic matter (OM), hence influencing carbon (C) cycling, including the production and emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ). Most studies assessing the impact of dams tend to focus on large impoundments, although small impoundments (< 15 m high) are likely to have notable local‐ and river continuum‐scale effects by fragmenting the river network. We aimed to determine if and how small impoundments affect OM stocks, leaf litter decomposition, and gaseous C emissions to the atmosphere. We monitored 21 sites across an impounded river network in central France over three seasons. We measured in situ diffusive CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes, as well as leaf litter decomposition rates, OM stocks, and OM transport. Two small impoundments and the river reaches immediately upstream and downstream had varying patterns of C emissions, with CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes highest immediately downstream of one impoundment and high seasonal variability in fluxes at the other impoundment. Small impoundments impacted the expected river continuum pattern of OM stocks, but not leaf litter decomposition nor CO 2 emissions. In sum, small impoundments can have contrasting local impacts and combined river continuum‐scale effects on C cycling. Our study highlights the importance of considering both the local‐ and river continuum‐scales when examining river C dynamics and how they are influenced by anthropogenic impacts

International audienceOn the Durance, 8 dams have been built between Serre-Ponçon and the confluence with the Rhône, to supply water to 16 hydroelectric plants (with a capacity of 2,000 MW) as well as agricultural and drinking water intakes via a lateral canal (EDF canal). In this sector, fish populations are subject to significant natural variability in hydroclimatic conditions due to the Mediterranean climate, in addition to changes in the hydrological and sedimentary regimes linked to the presence and operation of the dams. In particular, the minimum flow reach located downstream of the Mallemort dam in the Lower Durance (a section of ca. 40 km long), can receive significant flow releases from the EDF canal. Releases are similar to hydropeaking, resulting in large and unpredictable flow variations, mainly depending on electricity demand. Here, we analyse fish data collected annually since 2003 at two stations in minimum flow sections downstream and upstream of the Mallemort dam (one subject to releases and the other not) to determine the effects of the main environmental factors (flow, temperature, suspended matter). We are especially seeking to disentangle the respective roles of natural flooding vs the influence of dam operations on the interannual dynamics of fish populations. Emphasis is placed on the detailed characterisation of hydropeaking and on the assessment of their potential effects.

    No full text
International audienceThe gradual use of artificial light at night by human beings is causing light pollution, which has an impact on ecosystems and biodiversity. However, it is difficult to quantify and control, and there are still gaps in our knowledge of its impact. This article presents a methodological framework for taking account of light pollution issues on company sites, while including the safety requirements of industry. First, it proposes a macroscopic analysis to identify their lighting context in order to target priority sites, where the issues relating to lighting and biodiversity will be characterised in greater detail. The aim is then to identify conflicts so that they can be better integrated into the development of a differentiated lighting management plan, with a view to restoring dark infrastructures.L’utilisation progressive par l’être humain de la lumière artificielle nocturne engendre une pollution lumineuse qui impacte les écosystèmes et la biodiversité.

International audienceThe main cause of dam and embankment failure is erosion -internal and external erosion -which accounts for more than 80% of all causes of failure. This phenomenon is not covered by the European standards (Eurocodes) and requires a new approach in order to be considered. In 2024, after 7 years' work involving 26 professionals, the French Committee for Larges Dams is presently finalizing a project of recommendations for the assessment of hydraulic structures and their foundations to erosion. This project of recommendations, detailed on over 400 pages, for the first time encompasses internal and external erosion in a common 7-step methodology based on the concept of erosion paths. The proposed recommendations apply to three types of structure: dams, canals and dikes. They develop the use of both deterministic and probabilistic analysis. They propose three levels ofanalysis for internal erosion and three types of justification for external erosion. They are preliminary in nature, and the scope and novelty of the task mean that feedback will be needed in the coming years to validate the final version.

Functional diversity shapes the stability of reef fish biomass under global change

    No full text
International audienceUnderstanding how environmental and human pressures impact the temporal stability of fish community biomass on shallow reefs is essential for effective conservation and management. These pressures influence community stability directly, by affecting species’ stability and asynchrony in species’ fluctuations. However, their effects may also indirectly depend on the functional traits of the species composing the community, which remains poorly understood. Here, we examine both direct and indirect, trait-mediated effects of environmental variability and human impacts on species’ biomass stability and asynchrony in 215 Australian shallow reefs. These communities span a 10-degree sea surface temperature (SST) gradient and have been monitored over 14 years. Our results indicate higher asynchrony in tropical reefs owing to higher trait diversity and trait redundancy and higher species’ stability in colder, temperate communities owing to higher mean trophic level. Human impacts, through their negative effects on species’ stability and trait diversity, were the main destabilizing factor of fish community biomass. Temporal change in SST destabilized species’ biomass while increasing mean trophic level in fish communities. Overall, our findings show that a comprehensive analysis of the multiple facets of functional diversity is crucial to better understand and forecast the long-term stability of marine ecosystems under global change
