    No full text
Long-term CO2 storage is a key strategy for achieving the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Post-CO2 injection processes in saline aquifers must be understood to improve storage efficiency and safety. One critical process is convective dissolution, in which CO2 diffuses into brine, causing buoyancy-driven convection due to density differences. Despite well-characterised physicochemical processes, questions remain about the 3D convective dissolution of CO2. This work aims to develop an experimental method using shadowgraphy to study convection in transparent saturated porous media. The final objective is to measure CO2 convective dissolution in brine within a borosilicate glass bead porous medium using shadowgraphy. A particular challenge is to match the refractive index of the saturating fluid to the solid particles, which makes water impractical with glass beads. We developed a refractive index matching procedure using compatible fluids that make the porous medium transparent. We tested toluene/1-hexanol, potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) and cyclohexanol/toluene mixtures. With a transparent porous medium saturated with toluene/1-hexanol (76/24 wt%) mixture, an experimental setup was developed to study convective dissolution using analogue fluids via shadowgraphy for detailed convective mixing analysis. A high-resolution velocity measurement method for convective plumes was also developed. The results show that density differences driving convection affect convective front velocity, which is crucial for predicting convective mixing in porous media relevant to CO2 sequestration. Another experimental methodology based on shadowgraphy was developed to study convective dissolution in transparent porous media using CO2. These experiments were conducted at 293.15 K to 298.15 K and 0.5 to 4 MPa. In order to understand and explain the results, the thermophysical properties of the CO2+saturation mixtures (70wt% cyclohexanol/30wt% toluene) were determined at high pressure and temperature. The results indicate that the injection pressure of CO2 significantly affects the dissolution rate and convective mixing within the transparent porous media. The convective front velocity of the plumes increases with increasing Rayleigh number with a super-linear scaling, confirming the finding from the convection study using miscible analogue fluids. Finally, we performed 2D and 3D direct numerical simulations to measure CO2 concentration profiles and dissolution fluxes that our laboratory experiments could not provide. The results show that while the plume structures differ between 2D and 3D scenarios, the extent of the mixed region is comparable in both cases. Our results emphasise that the dissolution flux depends more on the Rayleigh number than on the dimensionality of the numerical simulation.

Elasmobranch vulnerability to global warming: insights from bioenergetic modelling of catsharks under climate scenarios

    No full text
International audienceEctotherms are especially vulnerable to global warming due to their temperature-sensitive metabolic processes, impacting survival and reproductive success. Elasmobranchs, with slow life histories and low reproductive rates, may face amplified risks. In this study, we investigated two catshark species with distinct life traits and distributions: the Small-spotted Catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) and the Nursehound (S. stellaris). Using newly calibrated bioenergetic models, we assessed changes in growth, sexual maturity, offspring production, and population dynamics under two CMIP6 climate scenarios projected for 2100: SSP2-4.5 (Middle of the Road) and SSP5-8.5 (Fossil-fueled Development), comparing these to historical data (1994-2015). Survival rates for early life stages remained similar under historical temperatures (80 %) and SSP2 (83 %) but dropped sharply under SSP5 to 33 % for S. canicula and 23 % for S. stellaris. Under both SSP2 and SSP5, S. canicula showed slight delays in maturation, yet the proportion of mature individuals ultimately exceeded historical levels in SSP2. Conversely, S. stellaris experienced progressively delayed maturation with warming. In SSP5, reduced growth, reproduction, and survival caused a population crash for S. stellaris, suggesting potential extinction. Our results reveal contrasting climate impacts on these species, underscoring the risk for late-maturing, low-fecundity, and narrowly distributed species. This emphasizes the urgency of conservation strategies tailored to mitigate their vulnerability to global warming

Coffee Silverskin as a Sustainable Alternative Filler for Plywood: Characterization and Performance Analysis

    No full text
International audienceCoffee silverskin, a by-product of coffee processing, was studied using microscopic (SEM), spectroscopic (FTIR), and thermogravimetric (TGA, DSC) methods to assess its use as a substitute filler in the manufacturing of plywood. TGA showed that the material was compatible with plywood hot pressing temperatures (140 °C) and that it was thermally stable up to 50 °C, with a notable decomposition event at 335 °C. Functional groups like hydroxyl and carbonyl were detected by FTIR analysis, indicating possible hydrogen bonds and chemical adaptability. DSC analysis confirmed structural alterations by highlighting endothermic processes associated with dehydration and an exothermic transition over 150 °C. Coffee silverskin substituted rye flour in plywood adhesive compositions at different concentrations (0%, 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20%). Due to the structural and chemical constraints of the filler, larger concentrations (10% and 20%) dramatically lowered bonding strength, whereas low silverskin amounts (1% and 5%) attained strengths equivalent to rye flour, reaching up to 5 N mm−2, according to internal bond strength tests. SEM images revealed smaller, more fragmented, and porous silverskin particles than larger, compact rye flour particles, which affected mechanical interlocking and adhesion. The findings point to coffee silverskin as an environmentally friendly and performance-balancing substitute for conventional fillers, especially at medium levels

Ecriture de soi et désir d'histoire

    No full text

How scientific networks can help advancing both scientific knowledge and public policies: the case study of the “Plastics, Environment and Health” network

    No full text
International audienceThe “Plastics, Environment and Health” research network (groupement de recherche, GDR) created in 2019 gathers the French scientific community working on plastic pollution in all environments (soil, air, water) and their impact on ecosystems and human health. The scientific objective is to rapidly increase knowledge on plastic pollution by supporting collaboration of researchers from different fields such as ecotoxicology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, oceanography and social science. Research is carried out at each stage of the plastic life cycle, (from resource extraction all the way to removal and remediation) and across the entire air-soil-water continuum, integrating transfers of both plastic particles (macro, micro- and nanoplastics) and plastic chemicals (e.g., additives) between different environmental compartments. In this context, the GDR supports the development of multi-scale and transdisciplinary approaches across three main axes: Axis 1 - Air-soil-water continuum: contamination levels and transfer between compartments; Axis 2 - Interactions and transformation of plastics in environmental compartments and living organisms; Axis 3. Plastic pollution risk assessment for ecosystems and human health. To do so, the GDR’s actions focus on (1) training and sharing of scientific knowledge, including developments towards innovation, (2) support for collaboration and interdisciplinarity between network members, (3) dissemination, structuring of the community and its national and international influence, and (4) support for public policy and/or decision-making by strengthening the link between scientists, decision-makers and the plastic industry. To date the research network includes more than 50 laboratories spread across France and over 300 scientists in the field of physics, chemistry, biology, ecology and social sciences. Such a network constitutes a powerful tool to build robust science-based knowledge significantly contributing to the international effort, to disseminate state-of-the-art scientific advances and research priorities needed to tackle plastic pollution to Society and to inform policy makers. This talk will present the French taskforce addressing 'Plastic, Environment, and Health' within the national research network, where the entire community works collaboratively to tackle the urgent challenges of plastic pollution, its environmental consequences, and the associated risks to human health. We will also discuss the importance of building a French-speaking community to support multilingualism in international political science interactions
