Discovery of mammalian collagens I and III within ancient poriferan biopolymer spongin

    No full text
International audienceAbstract Spongin is a fundamental biopolymer that has played a crucial role in the skeletogenesis of keratosan sponges for over 800 million years. This biomaterial had so far remained chemically unidentified and believed to be an enigmatic type of halogenated collagen-keratin-based bioelastomer. Here we show collagen I and III as the main structural components of spongin. Proteomics, 13 C solid state NMR and Raman spectroscopy confirm the identity of collagenous domains in spongin with collagen from mammals. Using an HPLC-MS analysis, we found halogenated di- and tri-tyrosines as crosslinking agents in spongin. Using molecular dynamics modeling, we solvated the crystal structures of collagen mimetic peptides for type I and type III collagens in four different systems, including selected brominated crosslinks. The results underscore the complex interplay between the collagen structures and crosslinks, raising intriguing questions about the molecular mechanisms underlying collagen chemistry within spongin as an ancient biocomposite

Optimal Separation of Two Microbial Species Competing for Two Substitutable Resources. Species Selection in Minimum-Time

    No full text
International audienceWe address a selection problem between two microbial species by controlling the dilution rate in a continuous stirred tank reactor. Unlike earlier studies, we focus on the competition between species for two substitutable substrates instead of a single limiting resource, with each species capable of dominating the culture. The selection of the most suitable strain is formulated as a minimum time optimal control problem. After examining the reachability of the target set, we conduct a thorough analysis of optimal solutions and singular arcs, using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and geometric control theory. Notably, unlike studies involving a single substrate, the target is not always reachable, and we construct a counterexample to prove it. In the case where the target can be reached, we highlight that optimal solutions exhibit turnpike-like phenomena by combining the approach with a direct optimization method, and these properties differ from those in the single substrate case. Although there is no natural static optimization problem associated with a minimum time control problem, our analysis enables us to characterize the turnpike point as the solution to a static optimization problem associated with an auxiliary Lagrange-type optimal control problem. These results are extensively illustrated throughout this work using direct optimization

    No full text
International audienceThis article considers the epistemological debate launched by decolonial studies, that is central to their perspective. After a review of the history and main theoretical foundations of decolonial studies, and their relationship with postcolonial studies, the first part analyses the decolonial critique of eighteenth-century epistemology of the North that appears to still be unique and dominant. The article shows that this critique overlooks the profound transformations in the social sciences, and particulary the emergence of the empirical reason in the twentieth century, which essentially broke away from positivism (the interpretative turn), social evolutionism (cultural relativism), and developmentalism (failure of the Western development industry). It similary overlooks the importance of critiques of colonization and Eurocentrism within the social sciences, particulary anthropology. While Western-centric ideology does of course still exists, fuelling various forms of racism and contempt, it should not be confused with epistemology or the social sciences. The second part focuses on « standpoint epistemology », borrowed from feminist studies, which grants « epistemic privilege » to identity-based positionalities stemming from subordinated and stigmatized group. While these positionalities must be taken into account, we must not forget the agency of researchers themselves, and the constructed scientific positionalities (concerning epistemology, methodology, political options and research themes) that play a major role, of which anthropology provides numerous examples. In counterpoint, the third section focuses on the many asymmetries that still characterize relations between researchers in the South and researchers in the North, to the detriment of the former. These asymmetries are historical, political, educational, economic, social and institutional, and it is essential to support conceptual, programmatic and financial autonomy for research units in the South, particularly in Africa, but it is not a matter of « epistemological revolution ».Cet article est consacré au débat épistémologique qui a été lancé par les études décoloniales et qui est au centre de leur perspective.

This interview with Dorothée Dussy exam-ines the role of incest in the functioning of the family institution and, beyond that, of society. In doing so, it raises a central question: to what extent is the family the ‘cradle of domination’, the primary and fundamental place of learning for a dominated relationship or, on the contrary, a dominant relationship with the world? Returning to the conditions that make an anthropological approach to incest possible, free from its androcentric biases, Dorothée Dussy shows that sexual and physical violence within the family socializes people into fear and leads to the internalization of a disposition towards submission and acceptance of domination. In the system of silencing that surrounds incest, everyone – incest victims, perpetrators, relatives, friends, teachers or childcare profession-als, neighbours, classmates – learns their place, by contagion and impregnation.

How Local Policies Transform Foodscapes, Influence Dietary Shifts, and Reduce Emissions: Insights from Six Mediterranean Sub-Regions in France

    No full text
International audienceAlthough foodscape planning is increasingly recognized as a critical component of sustainability transitions, it remains an emerging field of research and practice. Existing studies often overlook the multifaceted role that local food planning can play in shaping the physical, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions of foodscapes. This study examines how recent local food policy initiatives are reconfiguring foodscapes across six Mediterranean sub-regions in France. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines an analysis of locally implemented policies with survey data on evolving food practices. The findings reveal a growing emphasis by local authorities on socio-cultural and cognitive interventions, which are associated with modest dietary shifts aligned with environmental objectives. These results offer insights into how local food planning can more effectively support the adoption of sustainable diets
