International audienceStrengthening the study of genetic diversity and population structure is crucial for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources. This study evaluated the genetic diversity and population structure of Moroccan apricot germplasm based on the geographical origins of 92 accessions and their agroecosystem conditions using 21 microsatellite markers. The analysis revealed high genetic diversity within each geographical origin (94%) and lower diversity between the 10 studied regions (6%). A total of 120 alleles were identified, averaging 5.71 alleles per locus, with BPPCT038 and BPPCT001 being, respectively, the most informative (11 alleles) and the least informative (2 alleles) primers. The genetic structure analysis divided the germplasm into two main populations: a predominant group linked to the Delpatriarca variety and a smaller and less diverse group associated with the Canino variety. Low genetic differentiation and significant gene flow between these populations, influenced by pollen dispersal, overlapping geographical origins, and human intervention, contributed to the observed structure of two gene pools. These findings simplify the management of Moroccan apricot genetic resources and highlight a population structure that could serve as a core collection summarising the diversity of Moroccan apricot germplasm

Research note: In vitro anticoccidial activity of protein and lipid extracts from the black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens)

International audienceAvian coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria spp., is the main parasitic disease in the poultry industry, responsible for high economic costs worldwide. Faced with anticoccidial resistance and societal pressure to reduce inputs in livestock sector, insects could provide a relevant alternative to anticoccidial molecules. The larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) are easy to rear, and can be used to enhance the value of by-products and food waste. Here, anticoccidial activities of protein extracts solubilized in water and lipid extracts solubilized in methanol of H. illucens larvae were evaluated in vitro. Larvae were either blanched and freeze-dried or dried and pressed. The maximum noncytotoxic dose of each extract (20 g/L and 35 g/L of dry matter equivalent) was assessed in avian cells, using a series of tenfold dilutions. The parasite strain Et-INRAE was modified to express nano-luciferase reporter gene. Parasites were pre-treated with extracts. Then, avian cells were infected and incubated in the presence of the extracts. Inhibition of cell invasion and parasite development were assessed by quantification of the luminescence detected. Lipid extracts and protein extracts inhibit Eimeria growth at, at least, a 10⁻⁶ dilution. Further research is required to confirm these results in vivo, assess potential antinutritional effects, and possibly identify active compounds from fractionated extracts to optimize the observed anticoccidial activities

From Stream to Bloom: Exploring the Potential Role of Aquatic Insects for Pollination in Wetland Environments

    No full text
International audienceThe substantial loss of insects we are experiencing today has been highlighted all over the world. There is a growing concern about the global decline of pollinators and its impact on terrestrial and agricultural ecosystems, but the focus of scientists towards bees remains the rule. Therefore, the role of other insect taxa in pollination is still overlooked. Our review focused on some of these neglected pollinating taxa, the winged aquatic insects, i.e., insects with an aquatic larval stage such as Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera (ETP), Megaloptera and some aquatic Diptera. We first documented the visitors of aquatic and wetland flowering plants, anticipating a greater presence of aquatic insects on these plants compared to terrestrial pollinators. Secondly, we documented plant visits, pollen found in gut contents and pollen transfers performed by aquatic insects. Our results revealed a surprisingly low proportion of aquatic insects visiting both aquatic and wetland plants, suggesting a potential gap in the literature. The scarcity of articles dedicated to pollen transfer by aquatic insects also indicates that they are fewly considered in ecological studies. While the role of aquatic insects in pollination is not well documented in the literature, records of their flower visits and pollen found on them or in their gut contents do exist and are promising clues to consider them as effective pollinators. Future research is needed to provide new insights into the importance of winged aquatic insects for the reproductive success of plants, which could also be an argument for the importance of wetland conservation

International audienceDiscovery of parts of a ship (Saint-Gervais 9) on the beaches of Saint-Gervais and Cavaou, at Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône): evidence of a possible dolia wreck? Pieces of wood deposited by the sea between October 2018 and December 2019 on the beaches of Saint-Gervais and Cavaou at Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône) have turned out to be fragments of wreckage belonging to a single ancient ship, now known as Saint-Gervais 9. Sixteen fragments of planking, all made from Scots pine and assembled by very tight mortise-and-tenon joining, and five elements of frame, all of elm, present a relatively homogeneous ensemble in terms of size and taxonomy. The particular shape of a floor timber, with a rectilinear profile and a rounded central limber hole framed by two projecting heels, is comparable to the floor timbers found on two dolia shipwrecks, Ladispoli and Ouest Giraglia 2, designed for the transportation of bulk wine and dated to between the Augustan period and the first half of the 1 st century AD. A dendrochronological match of the tree-ring series from three pieces of Saint-Gervais 9 planking has been established with data from the Dramont A wreck, which is estimated to have sunk around 50 BC. While this dendrochronological dating, which must be considered with caution due to the small sample size and the disappearance of peripheral rings, might appear early in view of the use of dolia vessels, it is nonetheless possible.
