Newcomers and Old Friends: Long‐Distance and Bridgehead Introductions Both Contribute to the Recent Invasion of the Little Fire Ant in Southern Europe

Identifying complex migration histories, made of long-distance dispersal from the native range and secondary introductions, or genetic patterns indicative of adaptation is crucial to build coherent management efforts of problematic invasive species. We here aimed at determining the routes of introduction and describing the genetic peculiarities of recent introductions of Wasmannia auropunctata, a destructive invasive ant species with a polymorphic clonal/sexual reproduction system. Location: We focused on three recently established European populations (Cyprus, France and Spain) and their relationship with earlier worldwide introductions and the native South American range of W. auropunctata. Methods: We used a combination of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequencing and genotyping of a total of 686 European individuals at 12 microsatellite loci (from 76 nests and seven localities), together with previous worldwide datasets totalling 503 COI sequences and 6963 genotyped individuals. Phylogenetic reconstruction and genetic differentiation analyses were used to infer the origin, reproduction systems and genetic diversity of the three European populations. Results: We show that the history of the invasion of Europe is a mix of secondary introductions from a Mediterranean bridgehead population (Israel), and a novel long-distance introduction from a climatically similar area of northeastern Argentina. All newly introduced populations reproduce clonally and display an outbred genotypic pattern, consistent with all prior introductions and with anthropised areas of the native range.2 of 15 Diversity and Distributions, 2025Main Conclusions: This study confirms that preventing novel introductions is complex and requires adequate surveillancetools to simultaneously monitor areas of the native range with potential prior adaptation and previous introductions that couldact as bridgeheads. Because of their ecological and genetic similarities, the fate of more ancient introductions could help us fore-see what the future holds for European introductions

Pour limiter ces déplacements inutiles, INRAE et l’ONF développent un outil qui devrait permettre d’adapter la programmation des exploitations forestières en fonction des prévisions météorologiques

An ecosystem-based index for Mediterranean coralligenous reefs: A protocol to assess the quality of a complex key habitat
International audienceCoralligenous reefs are among the most diverse Mediterranean ecosystems, particularly in the circalittoral zone. Shaped by calcified red algae, sponges, cnidarians, and bryozoans, they create a complex three-dimensional structure providing shelter for diverse fauna. These reefs develop either on steep rocky walls or as bioherms when calcified algae are the dominant organisms. Their structure and composition vary with location, depth, substrate, and environmental conditions.Assessing the status of such a complex ecosystem poses significant challenges. Ecosystem-based quality indices (EBQI) have already been applied successfully to various coastal Mediterranean habitats. Using a similar methodology, a new index, the Coralligenous Ecosystem-Based Quality Index (Cor-EBQI), was developed to assess the ecological status of the coralligenous ecosystem. The index incorporates the main functional compartments of these reefs, with each compartment weighted according to its importance in ecosystem functioning. Suitable descriptors were then selected to define five status classes for each compartment. A confidence index was also created to estimate data quality based on criteria such as methodology and expert judgement.Data from 63 sites along the French Mediterranean coast, including the Gulf of Lions, Provence, the French Riviera, Corsica, and Monaco, were analyzed. Evaluation of antioxidant–surfactant interactions using size distribution Taylor dispersion analysis: measuring antioxidant partitioning and size of native-state micelles
International audienceIn food emulsions, excess surfactants often lead to the formation of micelles, which play a critical role in modulating the localization and efficacy of antioxidants. The interactions between antioxidants and micelles can either enhance or impair antioxidant function. Despite this importance, methodologies to study these interactions in native-state micelles remain limited. In this study, we employed Size Distribution -Taylor Dispersion Analysis (SD-TDA), a fast and absolute technique for measuring diffusion coefficients and thus hydrodynamic radii, to investigate antioxidant-surfactant interactions in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles, both below and above its critical micelle concentration. Studied antioxidants include α-tocopherol, curcumin, gallic acid, propyl gallate, and octyl gallate. The results revealed distinct behaviors: while gallic acid remained in the aqueous phase regardless of SDS presence, octyl gallate appeared to co-micellize with SDS. Curcumin was fully incorporated into SDS micelles, with micelle size increasing from 4.68 ± 1.52 nm to 6.92 ± 0.79 nm at the maximum loading capacity of 3.57 ± 0.05 mM curcumin with 20 mM SDS. α-Tocopherol also localized within SDS micelles; however, above 2.5 mM, three distinct populations were identified using SD-TDA-free tocopherol in water, tocopherol in small micelles, and swollen SDS micelles. Unlike Dynamic Light Scattering, SD-TDA successfully resolved these populations and provided quantitative insights into their size and α-tocopherol partitioning. These findings highlight the potential of SD-TDA as a powerful tool for studying antioxidant partitioning and micellar interactions, opening the way for more in-depth investigations into the role of micelles in antioxidant efficiency in emulsified systems
Quels sont les facteurs du succès du genêt d'Espagne (Spartium junceum) pour la stabilisation d'un point chaud du terril minier du Défens (Meyreuil) ? Potentiel pour la restauration d'anthroposols issus de l'extraction du charbon
Le terril du Défens (Meyreuil, Bouches-du-Rhône) résulte du stockage de déchets issus notamment de l'exploitation passée du lignite et est le lieu de réactions d'auto-combustion induisant une montée en température du substrat. Des amendements par chaulage et des essais de végétalisation ont été effectués pour stabiliser le terril. Deux projets financés par l'OHM Bassin minier de Provence (BMP) sur ce terril ont permis de montrer in situ les capacités de tolérance de l'espèce Spartium junceum aux températures édaphiques et aux pH élevées (40°C ; pH>10). Différentes zonations de températures édaphiques ont été identifiées sur la spartiaie étudiée. Des mesures biométriques et de phytométabolites ont été réalisées sur des individus de S. junceum, ainsi que des observations de symbioses racinaires afin de caractériser l'état physiologique des plantes. En parallèle, les teneurs en métaux et métalloïdes des sols ont été déterminées et associées à une caractérisation agronomique du substrat pour évaluer les propriétés physicochimiques du terril. Les résultats ont été comparés à ceux d'une spartiaie naturelle de référence à Auriol. Une précocité phénologique de la spartiaie du terril a été observée concomitante à des teneurs en phytométabolites différentes. Les effets du développement de cette espèce sur la qualité du substrat du terril sont différents de ceux observés sur la spartiaie naturelle. Malgré tout, S. junceum persiste et se développe depuis 2004 sur des zones d'échauffement du terril et contribue à sa stabilisation. Les éléments scientifiques apportés par cette étude pourront ainsi favoriser une réhabilitation écologique de certains terrils à l'aide de cette espèce
Impact of late follicular luteinizing hormone levels on live birth rate after fresh embryo transfer: a retrospective cohort study in GNRH antagonist cycles
International audienceObjective To investigate the impact of LH levels in the late follicular phase during the GnRH antagonist protocol on embryo implantation and IVF live birth rate (LBR) after fresh embryo transfer (ET). Design Retrospective cohort study. Subjects Women who underwent controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) with a GnRH antagonist protocol at a Reproductive Medicine Center in a University Teaching Hospital between January 2020 and December 2022. Exposure Monocentric study involving 544 IVF cycles with the GnRH antagonist protocol. Four groups were stratified based on preovulatory LH levels: Q1: LH < 25th percentile, Q2: LH 25-50th percentile, Q3: LH 50-75th percentile, and Q4: LH > 75th percentile. Main outcome measures The primary outcome was the live birth rate after fresh embryo transfer. Secondary outcomes included embryo implantation, clinical pregnancy, and early pregnancy loss rates. Results During the late follicular phase, estradiol levels were significantly correlated with preovulatory LH levels (P = 0.03). The number of retrieved oocytes, 2PNs (two pronuclei), and usable embryos were similar across the groups. No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, early pregnancy loss, and LBR (P > 0.05). Conclusion In the antagonist protocol, pre-ovulatory LH levels had no impact on embryo implantation or IVF outcomes. A low LH level in the late follicular phase is not an indication for embryo freeze-all

Of the 6, keynote lectures, 71 oral presentations and 76 posters disclosed during the event, a total of 40 manuscripts were submitted to the special issue of which 18 were finally accepted for publication after a strict peer review process. Neuf ans au rythme des CTRA
National audienceFrom 2016 to 2025, Marc Talon served as Chair of the Territorial Commission for Archaeological Research (CTRA) of the East, a key scientific body responsible for evaluating archaeological research in Bourgogne–Franche-Comté and the Grand Est regions. Under his leadership, the Commission reviewed over 2,600 cases in 56 sessions, ensuring the continuity of public service even during the pandemic. Marc played a decisive role in modernising the Commission’s operations, introducing videoconferencing and collaborative tools while upholding scientific rigour and fairness in the assessment process. His sense of dialogue, diplomacy, and constant attention to the quality of deliberations strengthened the CTRA’s standing as a reference body in the field. Over the nine years of service, he successfully combined scientific excellence, collegial governance, and humanity, leaving his successors with a robust and exemplary framework for collective work.De 2016 à 2025, Marc Talon a exercé les fonctions de président de la Commission territoriale de la recherche archéologique (CTRA) de l’Est, instance scientifique essentielle à l’évaluation de la recherche archéologique en Bourgogne-Franche-Comté et dans le Grand Est. Sous sa présidence, la CTRA a examiné plus de 2 600 dossiers en 56 séances, assurant la continuité du service public même durant la pandémie. Marc a contribué à moderniser son fonctionnement, introduisant visioconférences et outils collaboratifs, tout en veillant à maintenir la rigueur scientifique et l’équité dans le traitement des dossiers. Son sens du dialogue, sa diplomatie et son attention constante à la qualité des débats ont renforcé le rôle de la CTRA comme instance de référence. En neuf années d’exercice, il a su conjuguer exigence scientifique, collégialité et humanité, laissant à ses successeurs un cadre de travail solide et exemplaire
