The family-school relationship in French Polynesia
International audienceThis chapter presents the first results of our ongoing research on parents’ representations of the school. Situated in the plurilingual and pluricultural context ofFrench Polynesia, the main objective of our study is to understand how parents perceive the school and their relationship with this institution. The results presented in this chapter focus exclusively on the representations of eighteen parents living in four isolated French Polynesian islands or atolls. This first module of the study highlights the relationship between these parents and the school through a detailed analysis of their discourse obtained through intensive interviews (40-192 minutes each). This study based its theoretical framework on the theory of social representations first introduced by Serge Moscovici. This epistemological position establishes an ecological and systemic interpretation of social dynamics, school practices and socialand cultural beliefs. The data analysis was conducted by applying to the interview corpus a series of in-depth iterative procedures using Grounded Theory methodologies. The iterative analysis methods we used allowed us to map out the content of the parents’ representations of the school. These results indicate that these parents make a direct association between success at school and success in life. However, their own school experiences are marked by unhappy memories and school failure. Likewise, their discourse on their children’s schooling reveals more expectations and hopes than satisfactions
International audienceA rat extermination program for the atoll of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia took place in June 2022. As part of this program, an exhaustive environmental inventory was initiated before the operation and will help to compare the state of the environment in the presence and absence of rats. The Tetiaroa Society, which coordinates research activities on the atoll, has expressed the need for a biotope map of the entire atoll in order to optimize the field sampling campaigns. This paper proposes a simple protocol to map the main marine, intertidal and terrestrial biotopes from a Pléiades optical and airborne lidar dataset. Marine biotopes were mapped using to depth criteria from lidar bathymetry, intertidal biotopes interpreted from optical data and terrestrial biotopes from lidar stratification of vegetation using conventional lidar index. The problem of representing terrestrial biotopes, some of which are superimposed, is solved by proposing a stratification of biotopes on 4 levels.
Increased growth metabolism promotes viral infection in a susceptible oyster population
International audienceThe magnitude of an epidemic depends on host susceptibility to the disease, a trait influenced by the genetic constitution of the host and its environment. While the genetic basis of disease susceptibility is often associated with immune capacities, environmental effects generally reflect complex physiological trade-offs. We suggest here that in the case of obligate pathogens whose proliferation depends on the cellular machinery of the host (e.g. viruses), disease susceptibility is directly influenced by host growth. To test our hypothesis, we focussed on a viral disease affecting an ecologically relevant model exploited worldwide, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Oysters originating from 3 lines with contrasting resistance to the disease were divided into 3 groups displaying different growth rates and acclimated to 3 food levels and 2 temperatures to generate different growth rates. These oysters were then exposed to the virus, and survival and viral shedding were measured. Finally, we developed a risk model to rank the relative importance of temperature, food, genetic selection and growth on disease-induced mortality. We found that increasing growth through temperature, food level or selection of fast-growing animals all increased mortality, especially in host populations where susceptible phenotypes dominated. Food provisioning was the most influential factor associated with higher viral shedding, followed by temperature, resistance phenotype and growth rate. We suggest that growth-forcing factors may promote the development of obligate intracellular pathogens and epidemic risk, thus opening up avenues for disease management based on the manipulation of host metabolism
Recovery patterns of the coral microbiome after relief of algal contact
International audienceInteractions between macroalgae and corals are omnipresent on eutrophied and overfished reefs worldwide. Contact with macroalgae can disrupt corals and their microbiomes through diverse mechanisms, including shading, abrasion, and the release of algal exudates. However, changes in the coral microbiome after algal contact ceases have not been studied. We investigated the recovery of the microbiome of massive reef-building Porites corals following experimental removal of the overgrowing green macroalga Halimeda macrophysa. We followed changes in the microbiome of macroalgal-removed and adjacent healthy-looking tissue of coral colonies over 40 days. Coral tissue was predominantly bleached underneath the macroalgae but regained almost its full pigmentation by day 40. Despite this recovery in pigmentation, the bacterial microbiome of macroalgal-removed coral tissue did not return to that of adjacent healthy-looking tissue (control). Overall, macroalgal contact led to the suppression of Gammaproteobacteria and increased diversity and dominance of Alphaproteobacteria, a shift that persevered for 40 days after algal removal. Causal effect analysis showed a positive effect of influential OTUs in healthy-looking tissue assigned to Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidia on the relative abundance of other OTUs within these classes. The effect of influential OTUs assigned to Alphaproteobacteria in macroalgal-removed tissue on the relative abundance of other OTUs was more diverse. Despite the high heterogeneity of coral microbiomes, differences in the relative abundance of main bacterial classes and orders between control/healthy and macroalgal-removed tissue showed temporal patterns. Differences in the Alpha-, Gamma-, Deltaproteobacteria and Bacteroidia between control/healthy and macroalgal-removed tissue increased after cessation of macroalga contact and stabilized or declined towards day 40. Acidimicrobiia, Deltaproteobacteria, Rhodospirillales and Rhodovibrionales returned to average relative abundances in the adjacent control/healthy tissue after 40 days. Nevertheless, Rhizobiales and Rhodobacterales (Alphaproteobacteria) still dominated the macroalgal-removed microbiome on day 40. We conclude that macroalgal overgrowth induces changes in the coral microbiome, and that algal removal did not lead to full recovery of the microbiome in 40 days. Return of pigmentation and distinct shifts in bacterial groups over time appear a possible pathway to the recovery of the coral microbiome after macroalgal removal
First tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier bite in 75 years in French Polynesia (Eastern Central Pacific)
International audienceWe analyzed a tiger shark (estimated 2.8 m total length) bite on a snorkeler. The removal of the terminal part of the leg suggests a predatory motivation for the, bite. This is the first documented bite by a tiger shark in French Polynesia waters for the past 75 years
