Energy performance assessment of Sea Water Air Conditioning (SWAC) as a solution toward net zero carbon emissions: A case study in French Polynesia

    No full text
International audienceSea Water Air Conditioning (SWAC) technology uses deep ocean water to cool buildings. It is a nonintermittent renewable thermal energy used directly without any transformation. It may replace other airconditioning systems powered by electrical energy (mechanical vapor compression thermodynamic cycle) or powered by other renewable energies (solar heating and cooling systems). Despite its theoretical appeal as a solution to help achieve net-zero carbon emissions, and the existence of successful deployments, SWAC technology remains scarce worldwide mainly due to its investment cost (CAPEX). One reason for this failure to scale might be the absence of experimental data detailing energy performance of SWAC systems in real-world, commercial settings. Here is presented the performance of an existing 2.4 MW SWAC system, operated by The Brando resort on the atoll of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia. Under a tropical climate, experimental results show that the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the SWAC system can reach 20 to 150 depending on the secondary loop length, compared with conventional vapor compression systems that peak at around 5 for the most efficient. To put this in terms of carbon emissions avoided, conventional unitary split systems running in similar hotels on neighboring islands in French Polynesia (COP around 3.5) emit some 860 Tons/year compared to the estimated 225 Tons/year emitted (approximated with the emissions factor of French Polynesia in 2019) operating the Tetiaroa SWAC

International audienceThis article is the result of a scientific introspection based on the observation of my studies and my career path, between studies in the environment, planning and urban development, leading to a reflection on geography as a university discipline, at the heart of my profession as a teacher-researcher. The first part presents planning as a discipline that aims to distribute and order the components of a territory, with a view to the future. The second defines urban planning as a practice at the crossroads of engineering, architecture, art and geography's sister disciplines, economics, sociology and law. A third argues for the importance of transdisciplinarity in favour of a decompartmentalised geography. Finally, the hybridisation of science and popularisation leads to a conclusion on the evolution of the profession, highlighting the advantages and pitfalls for society.

Global genetic diversity and historical demography of the Bull Shark

International audienceAim: Biogeographic boundaries and genetic structuring have important effects on the inferences and interpretation of effective population size (Ne) temporal variations, a key genetics parameter. We reconstructed the historical demography and divergence history of a vulnerable coastal high-trophic shark using population genomics and assessed our ability to detect recent bottleneck events.Location: Western and Central Indo-Pacific (IPA), Western Tropical Atlantic (WTA) and Eastern Tropical Pacific (EPA).Taxon: Carcharhinus leucas (Müller & Henle, 1839).Methods: A DArTcap™ approach was used to sequence 475 samples and assess global genetic structuring. Three demographic models were tested on each population, using an ABC-RF framework coupled with coalescent simulations, to investigate within-cluster structure. Divergence times between clusters were computed, testing multiple scenarios, with fastsimcoal. Ne temporal variations were reconstructed with STAIRWAYPLOT. Coalescent simulations were performed to determine the detectability of recent bottleneck under the estimated historical trend for datasets of this size. Results: Three genetic clusters corresponding to the IPA, WTA and EPA regions were identified, agreeing with previous studies. The IPA presented the highest genetic diversity and was consistently identified as the oldest. No significant within-cluster structuring was detected. Ne increased globally, with an earlier onset in the IPA, during the last glacial period. Coalescent simulations showed that weak and recent bottlenecks could not be detected with our dataset, while old and/or strong bottlenecks would erase the observed ancestral expansion.Main Conclusions: This study further confirms the role of marine biogeographic breaks in shaping the genetic history of large mobile marine predators. Ne historical increases in Ne are potentially linked to extended coastal habitat availability. The limited within-cluster population structuring suggests that Ne can be monitored over ocean basins. Due to insufficient amount of available genetic data, it cannot be concluded whether overfishing is impacting Bull Shark genetic diversity, calling for whole-genome sequencing

Transcriptomics of mussel transmissible cancer MtrBTN2 suggests accumulation of multiple cancer traits and oncogenic pathways shared among bilaterians

    No full text
International audienceTransmissible cancer cell lines are rare biological entities giving rise to diseases at the crossroads of cancer and parasitic diseases. These malignant cells have acquired the amazing capacity to spread from host to host. They have been described only in dogs, Tasmanian devils and marine bivalves. The Mytilus trossulus bivalve transmissible neoplasia 2 (MtrBTN2) lineage has even acquired the capacity to spread inter-specifically between marine mussels of the Mytilus edulis complex worldwide. To identify the oncogenic processes underpinning the biology of these atypical cancers we performed transcriptomics of MtrBTN2 cells. Differential expression, enrichment, protein–protein interaction network, and targeted analyses were used. Overall, our results suggest the accumulation of multiple cancerous traits that may be linked to the long-term evolution of MtrBTN2. We also highlight that vertebrate and lophotrochozoan cancers could share a large panel of common drivers, which supports the hypothesis of an ancient origin of oncogenic processes in bilaterians

International audienceEnquiring into literature written in Tahitian in the twenty-first century requires us to study its relation to the oral tradition as well as its themes and leading authors. A er a short historical overview, we focus on works produced in the first two decades of the new century, which are either single-or multi-authored. We examine the salient features of these works, both those written for a young audience and those of so-called 'classical' literature. We seek to identify and explain the socio-literary dynamics at play, in particular in terms of their relation to the Tahitian language. Based on the data we have collected, including with regard to the publishing market in Tahiti, we highlight some factors that are key to the survival and development of a literature written in a language that is in probable decline.S'interroger sur la littérature en langue tahitienne du 21 ème siècle revient à définir ce qu'elle est aujourd'hui, en analysant les rapports qu'elle entretient avec la tradition orale, les champs et les domaines qu'elle investit ainsi que ses principaux auteurs.
