Herbivory effects of sea urchin species on a coral reef (Bora-Bora, French Polynesia)
WOS:000958865300001International audienceMacroalgae are becoming dominant on coral reefs worldwide, replacing corals as key habitat formers. Incrementing consumption rates by herbivores, such as sea urchins, has been identified as a viable strategy for promoting coral recovery. By means of a 28-day experiment, we assessed the grazing effects of the sea urchins, Tripneustes gratilla and Diadema setosum, on the macroalgal assemblages of shallow reefs at Bora-Bora (French Polynesia). In particular, each urchin species was either absent or maintained, using cages (n = 10), at a density of 5 individuals/m2. T. gratilla exerted stronger negative effects than D. setosum on all the examined macroalgae (i.e., Turbinaria ornata, Padina boryana, Halimeda spp, Dictyota spp). In addition, the grazing effects by T. gratilla on macroalgae emerged shortly after the start of the experiment, more rapidly than those of D. setosum. Despite an apparent lower food preference for T. ornata in D.setosum, all macroalgae were consumed by both species and the composition of the macroalgal assemblages (i.e., the proportion of each species) did not change after 28 days. Overall, our study suggests that herbivorous sea urchins, when at relatively high densities, could contribute to sustaining coral-dominance on coral reefs by keeping macroalgae under control
Inventory of sharks around La Réunion through environmental DNA analyses with an ecosystemic approach (elasmobranchs and bony fishes): Report IRRAE Project (funding DEAL)
This project is divided into two components (Figure A). The first component, named the pilot study, aimed to optimize a non-invasive, reproducible, and standardized method for conducting the inventory and monitoring of sharks around La Réunion, while complementing this approach with an ecosystemic analysis involving other elasmobranchs (rays) and bony fishes. To achieve this, we employed a genetic method, environmental DNA (eDNA), which involves identifying species based on their DNA present in the environment, without direct in-situ animal observation. Utilizing DNA traces found in environmental samples (surface water, water column, and sediments), this innovative method was compared using two molecular processes (metabarcoding and barcoding) to optimize species detection. This optimization led to the development of a reproducible and standardized protocol for monitoring and environmental surveillance of sharks and rays around La Réunion. The second component of this project provides an initial representation, using this technology, of the presence of sharks and rays around the island, from March to November 2022. By employing universal genomic primers for fishes and elasmobranchs, this study contributes to our understanding of the geographical distribution of these species, identifying six shark species and nine ray species (Tiger shark - Galeocerdo cuvier, Bull shark - Carcharhinus leucas, Sleeper shark - Centroscymnus owstoni, Whitetip shark - Carcharhinus albimarginatus, Rough shark - Loxodon macrorhinus, Scalloped hammerhead shark - Sphyrna lewini, Eagle ray - Aetobatus sp., Stingrays - Dasyatis sp., Spotted eagle ray - Taeniurops meyeni formerly known as Taeniura meyeni, Devil ray - Mobula sp., Lesser devil ray - Mobula thurstoni, Giant guitarfish - Rhynchobatus djiddensis, Electric ray - Torpedo sp.). Additionally, this study provides ecosystemic insights that allow us to glimpse the potential of this technology (eDNA and metabarcoding) for the entire ichthyofauna.
