Tetiaroa diachronic geomorphology 1955 -2023 Monitoring the shoreline and vegetation cover of tropical atoll in the climate change context
International audienceThe Tetiaroa atoll is virtually free of anthropogenic pressure, making it a textbook case for observing the impact of climate change on the pristine coral atolls of French Polynesia. A geospatial databasedating back to 1955 was used to map and analyze erosion and accretion phenomena on the atoll's motu (Tahitian name for islets). Its diachronic analysis documents two types of motu: those with a coralline base, which experience minimal movement over time, and the sandy motu which, on the contrary, exhibit significant dynamics linked to strong swells and storms. While we cannot yet link the observed dynamics to climate change and rising sea levels, these results will help us better understand the future impacts of extreme climatic events on Polynesian atolls
Diversity and functional specialization of oyster immune cells uncovered by integrative single cell level investigations
International audienceMollusks are a major component of animal biodiversity and play a critical role in ecosystems and global food security. The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea (Magallana) gigas, is the most farmed bivalve mollusk in the world and is becoming a model species for invertebrate biology. Despite the extensive research on hemocytes, the immune cells of bivalves, their characterization remains elusive. Here we were able to extensively characterize the diverse hemocytes and identified at least seven functionally distinct cell types and three hematopoietic lineages. A combination of single-cell RNA sequencing, quantitative cytology, cell sorting, functional assays and pseudo-time analyses was used to deliver a comprehensive view of the distinct hemocyte types. This integrative analysis enabled us to reconcile molecular and cellular data and identify distinct cell types performing specialized immune functions, such as phagocytosis, reactive oxygen species production, copper accumulation, and expression of antimicrobial peptides. This study emphasized the need for more in depth studies of cellular immunity in mollusks and non-model invertebrates and set the ground for further comparative immunology studies at the cellular level

Planning a Paris 2024 Event Away from the Capital: The Surfing Competition at Teahupo’o
International audienceThe Paris 2024 surfing events are held in Teahupo’o in French Polynesia, 16,000 km from Paris. The choice of Teahupo’o, which was a promising choice from a sporting, symbolic and political point of view, has been questioned mainly due to environmental concerns. Using a qualitative approach, the aim of this chapter is to assess the difficulties encountered in organising and planning such a remote event. Our study reveals a lack of anticipation and transparency on the part of various public stakeholders. It also highlights the need to consider the social acceptability of hosting the surfing competition. Lastly, the study shows the extent to which the notion of the legacy of the Olympic Games is the result of a Western-centric vision
PERIODIC AUTOCORRELATION OF SEQUENCES
International audienceThe autocorrelation of a sequence is a useful criterion, among all, of resistance to cryptographic attacks. The behavior of the autocorrelations of random Boolean functions (studied by Florian Caullery, Eric Férard and François Rodier [4]) shows that they are concentrated around a point. We show that the same is true for the evaluation of the periodic autocorrelations of random binary sequences.</div
Divergent learning responses to a spatially consistent olfactory stimulus in two reef shark species
International audienceThere is growing evidence of the important role learning plays in shark foraging, but few studies have examined the relationship between learning and foraging behavior in free-living settings. We addressed this knowledge gap by experimentally contrasting responses of blacktip reef Carcharhinus melanopterus and sicklefin lemon Negaprion acutidens sharks to an olfactory-only feeding stimulus—baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS)—that was either spatially randomized (as a control) or offered repeatedly at the same location in the lagoon of Tetiaroa, French Polynesia. Relative to their response to the randomized BRUVS, blacktip reef sharks appeared to sensitize to the repeated treatment, exhibiting increasing relative abundance upon introduction of the cue (maximum number of individuals of a species observed on any frame of a video [MaxN] at deployment) and decreasing arrival times as the experiment progressed. By contrast, sicklefin lemon shark responses were either consistent across control and treatment BRUVS over time or suggested habituation (as evidenced by declining MaxN in response to the spatially repeated exposure). Accordingly, our findings advance our understanding of shark cognition by highlighting that sensitized learning responses to stable feeding cues can develop even when the olfactory attractant is not accompanied by a reward, while also indicating that shark responses to these cues can be species-specific. They also suggest that, for at least some shark species, olfactory cues alone could lead to learned responses that confound non-invasive efforts to monitor shark populations and communities (e.g. with BRUVS) and drive spatial behavior with the potential to affect both ecotourism and negative human-shark interactions
Empirical Risk Minimization with Relative Entropy Regularization
Same version as published by the IEEE Transactions on Information TheoryInternational audienceThe empirical risk minimization (ERM) problem with relative entropy regularization (ERM-RER) is investigated under the assumption that the reference measure is a -finite measure, and not necessarily a probability measure. Under this assumption, which leads to a generalization of the ERM-RER problem allowing a larger degree of flexibility for incorporating prior knowledge, numerous relevant properties are stated. Among these properties, the solution to this problem, if it exists, is shown to be a unique probability measure, mutually absolutely continuous with the reference measure. Such a solution exhibits a probably-approximately-correct guarantee for the ERM problem independently of whether the latter possesses a solution. For a fixed dataset and under a specific condition, the empirical risk is shown to be a sub-Gaussian random variable when the models are sampled from the solution to the ERM-RER problem. The generalization capabilities of the solution to the ERM-RER problem (the Gibbs algorithm) are studied via the sensitivity of the expected empirical risk to deviations from such a solution towards alternative probability measures. Finally, an interesting connection between sensitivity, generalization error, and lautum information is established
