Twin Champions of the Slovak-Cause: Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Robert William Seton-Watson
Both Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and British publicist and historian Robert William Seton-Watson have been widely recognized as champions of the rights of small nations. Owing to their tireless engagement for the Slovak cause, they are regular “guests of honour” at conferences or commemorations in Slovakia to keep the memory of among others, the Černova tragedy of 1907 alive. Bjørnson’s activity for the Slovaks has received a very special attention in Norway, too, but so far only from a Czechoslovak/Slovak perspective. The emphasis is on the internationally acclaimed Nobel Prize-winning poet’s changing assessment of Hungary: his full support for Hungarian demands during the Austro-Hungarian constitutional crisis (1905-6), followed by a radical change for the worse in his attitude towards Hungary, and his heated debate with the Hungarian Minister of Education, Albert Apponyi. The article seeks to explore Bjørnson’s main motivations for such a large-scale international campaign, the shortcomings of which become all the more apparent in the light of Seton-Watson’s similar pro-Slovak activity. Moreover, Bjørnson’s and Seton-Watson’s articles and correspondence in Norwegian, English, German and French, as well as secondary sources in Slovak and Hungarian reveal hard lessons about the policy of Magyarization and the pre-war Hungarian attitudes towards well-meaning foreign critics. It is argued that instead of being used to foment national antagonisms and conflicts in Central-Europe, historical memory should be inspired by Bjørnson’s and Seton-Watson’s best vision of Europe as a continent of equals
Fogalmi metaforák köznyelvtől szaknyelvig: AZ ELMÉLETEK ÉPÜLETEK és A FOLYAMAT UTAZÁS megjelenési formái változatos szövegtípusokban
http://alkalmazottnyelvtudomany.hu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/SolyomR.docx.pdfThis paper focuses on the appearance of two conceptual metaphors; THEORIES ARE BUILDINGS, and PROCESSES ARE JOURNEYS in Hungarian. The hypothesis is that these metaphors and metaphorical expressions linked to them occur and have an important role not only in literature and colloquial language use but also in technical languages. To prove this, the paper investigates the appearance and functioning of these two metaphors in different Hungarian text types: 1) in slang neologisms, 2) in slogans of advertisements, and in technical texts (3– 5): 3) in terms of quality management dictionary, 4) in excerpts of quality standards, and 5) in EU regulations. With the help of the analysis, the paper shows that these conceptual metaphors function similarly in these different types of Hungarian texts
Closed formula of test length required for adaptive testing with medium probability of solution
Purpose Based on the general formula, which depends on the length and difficulty of the test, the number of respondents and the number of ability levels, this study aims to provide a closed formula for the adaptive tests with medium difficulty (probability of solution is p = 1/2) to determine the accuracy of the parameters for each item and in the case of calibrated items, determine the required test length given number of respondents. Design/methodology/approach Empirical results have been obtained on computerized or multistage adaptive implementation. Simulation studies and classroom/experimental results show that adaptive tests can measure test subjects’ ability to the same quality over half the test length compared to linear versions. Due to the complexity of the problem, the authors discuss a closed mathematical formula: the relationship between the length of the tests, the difficulty of solving the items, the number of respondents and the levels of ability. Findings The authors present a closed formula that provides a lower bound for the minimum test length in the case of adaptive tests. The authors also present example calculations using the formula, based on the assessment framework of some student assessments to show the similarity between the theoretical calculations and the empirical results. Originality/value With this formula, we can form a connection between theoretical and simulation results
S. Szabó József (1862-1944) pedagógusi munkássága: a „szeretet igéjével” való nevelés példája
The spirit of the Reformed College of Debrecen has been a defining value for
centuries, and it still is today, helping students to grow up and develop their best
abilities. Its effectiveness is determined by dedicated teachers, who support the
students with both their knowledge and personality, while their activities also
provide inspiration that should be followed as an example for future educators.
The teaching work of József S. Szabó, the religion teacher and Director of the
Debrecen Reformed College High School between 1922 and 1929, carries rich
values with the spiritual growth of both the institution and its students. The
purpose of this study is to examine the life path that served as the source of this
exceptional pedagogical effect and through it to support the lessons of the roots
of the spirit. In the background of the processing, in addition to the relevant
literature, high school bulletins and parish minutes were also used as a basis
A családi vállalkozásokat a közgondolkodás gyakran azonosítja a KKV-kkal, holott a családi vállalkozások között valóságos óriások is szép számmal fordulnak elő.
= The study introduces the subjects and time periods of medieval epigraphy, emphasizing its distinction from antique epigraphic studies. The researched time period in Hungary is from the foundation of the Kingdom of Hungary to the beginning of Turkish occupation of the country (possibly until the late 16th century). The subject of the research programme is the inscriptions found on historic items and monuments. The importance of epigraphy lies in the style of inscriptions, the type, connection, abbreviation and execution of fonts, as these are all characteristic of a certain historical period, thus carry the possibility of determining their exact date. The study emphasises the need to collect items from the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. It will also be necessary to include other writing materials in the epigraphic study. In addition to the creation of a national professional workshop, the topics of medieval epigraphy can be presented through national and international workshops or conferences
A Piece of Qing History. The Historical Value of a Sibe Self-taught Historian's Collection of Genealogies
The roots of the genealogy writing tradition of the Chinese Sibe go back to the Qing Dynasty. This tradition has played a crucial role to create a genealogical community of the Sibe: genealogies were the material carriers of knowledge preserved about their ancestors and their past. However, many of the genealogies were lost during the turbulent time of the twentieth century, and although numerous Sibe clans embark on reproducing their own family trees, it is only the memory of the elderly they can most often draw on. This study is intended to present and highlight the significance a specific collection of genealogies compiled by a self-taught Sibe historian, offering valuable sources for conduct research on the history of the Qing-dynasty and the Sibe

From (in)securitisation to conviviality: the reconciliatory potential of participatory ethnography
Abstract: Racialised bilinguals experience marginalisation all over the world. In
South-East Europe, millions of bilingual Roma share this experience alongside
emerging aspirations of conviviality, which remain rare. This paper considers
marginalisation as a consequence of (in)securitisation. The concept of (in)securitisation addresses discursive techniques of power which advocate the protection of
some at the price of excluding others. These discursive techniques are exerted on
different levels of social interaction, creating and maintaining uncertainty. The
paper discusses individual aspirations to conviviality, or peaceful cohabitation, in
(in)securitised local realities in a town in Hungary, where 20 % of the population
are bilingual Roma. Furthermore, it explores whether the leveraging of translingual practices can be an effective tool for conviviality. The argument is based on
long-term field research, and the data used comes from a series of participatory
workshops, attended by academic non-local and local participants. Using the
method of Moment Analysis to understand workshop discussions, the article focuses on the ways in which participants negotiate the dependencies of (in)securitisation while trying to forge convivial capabilities. Experience shows that acts of
(in)securitisation and racialised social roles define relations even within the
research group, and only certain types of capabilities considered convivial are
suitable to override them
