From seismic hazards to resilient cities: the contribution of engineering geology
Different types of natural hazard affect the surface of the Earth, exposing human communities to high-risk conditions. This fact makes it imperative to identify strategies for preventing, responding to, managing, and recovering from natural disasters. It is within this framework that the concept of “resilience” has arisen. Achieving a resilient condition is the only way to mitigate the impact of and the losses due to natural disasters, as well as to protect the health and well-being of communities. The paper discusses the contribution that engineering geology can provide to increasing the structural and social resilience of communities to the impact of earthquakes. Creating awareness of engineering geology applications in society and among public institutions can enhance social resilience, while promoting the understanding of natural processes and their interactions with man-made structures and the environment can improve the structural component of resilience. The paper describes the role of engineering geology as a new player in strengthening community resilience, suggesting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to achieving a resilient condition
Change of nearshore extreme wind and wave climate in Southeast Africa
Climate change impact assessment is vital in order to investigate not only the change of average wind and wave climate, but also the extreme events. Such kind of events can affect the activities in nearshore areas such as marine operation, as well as on design of coastal and marine structures. In this research, long-term assessment of wind and wave data has been conducted to determine the effect of climate change by comparing the dataset for historical and future projections. Hydro-geomortphological evolution analysis of a cliff
The paper illustrates a mid-term geomorphological evolution analysis of the cliff called “Ripe Rosse”, one of the most important rocky coast geosite in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni UNESCO Global Geopark. Specifically, the study aims to define the main geological and geomorphological characteristics of the areas in question. High coasts are usually the result of a very long evolution (thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years). This type of high coast is particular, it follows an evolution model called “slope-over-wall”. During the last decades, frequent and high-intensity landslide events have induced a significant increase in the risk especially along the unique state road connecting all touristic villages in Southern Cilento Coastland. In particular, in order to better identify integrated strategies to both preserve the geosite and prevent road damages, the geomorphological study has been supported by orientated numerical engineering modelling SCAPE (Soft Cliff And Platform Erosion). The application of the numerical model has given promising results on how the cliff will retreat in the next 500 years and therefore on how to mitigate the risk according to special value of the site
A new species of Fredlanea Martins and Galileo, 1996 from Peruvian Andes (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Hemilophini)
A new species of genus Fredlanea Martins and Galileo, 1996 is described from Peru: Fredlanea wilderi sp. nov., based on a specimen collected from the Cuyas cloud forest in Piura region, important mountain rainforest of Peruvian Andes. The new taxon is closely related to Fredlanea guaranitica (Lane, 1966) but can be distinguished by presence of yellowish pubescence on proepisterna, mesepimera and metepisterna, and absence of longitudinal strip of yellow pubescence on epipleural margins. Morphometric differences in populations of Nebria kratteri Dejean and Boisduval, 1830 from two old forests in Calabria (Coleoptera, Carabidae)
In carabid beetles, several morphometric parameters may vary from one habitat to another. Body size is one of the most important traits in animals because it directly relates to fitness and changes across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. In this paper, we compare two populations of Nebria kratteri (Coleoptera, Carabidae) sampled in two old forest sites of the Sila Mountain in Calabria. The specimens show significant differences in all morphometric parameters measured, the larger size at one site could be related to intraspecific competition
Description of eight new Paratrichius Janson, 1881 from Vietnam (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae)
Increased availability of recently collected beetle material from Vietnam has stimulated numerous taxonomic studies. Several specimens representing new species of the genus Paratrichius Janson, 1881, were discovered among this material. These are described here as Paratrichius bartolozzii sp. nov., P. caobangi sp. nov., P. dangvanboi sp. nov., P. parvolaetus sp. nov. , P. saetosus sp. nov. , P. triguttatus sp. nov., P. inexpectatus sp. nov. and P. variiscoloratus sp. nov., thereby bringing the total number of known Vietnamese species to 29. The distribution of the species highlights three major areas of endemism for the genus within the country: northern provinces, Central Highlands and southern provinces. To date, no species has been found to inhabit more than one of these areas. Further research in intermediate areas is needed to better clarify boundaries between these areas of endemism
An interesting case of polystyrene consumption by Reticulitermes lucifugus (Blattodea: Neoisoptera, Rhinotermitidae)
A colony of Reticulitermes lucifugus from Apulia (SE Italian Peninsula) was recently observed to have partially consumed some polystyrene panels applied on a wall, and used like seat for termite nest. Further observations could allow to better understand if this colony is just able to physically consume and chew this plastic material, releasing it chemically intact after the passage throughout the termites’ digestive system, or if their microbiome could allow the insects to at least partially metabolize and degrade the ingested polystyrene fragments, as recently observed in a few other insects
