    A Methodological approach for the effective infiltration assessment in a coastal groundwater

    Accurate estimates of spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater recharge are of utmost importance to protect groundwater systems. In coastal areas, the fragility of the systems makes such estimates critical for the correct management and protection of water resources from saltwater intrusion. The Muravera coastal plain, in the south-eastern Sardinia, has been studied since 1960, due to important saltwater intrusion phenomena. Since the early fifties, the natural hydrodynamic equilibrium between groundwater, surface-water and seawater has been deeply modified by the construction of four dams across the Flumendosa river and the development of agriculture, tourism and aquaculture activities along the coast. To implement an integrated and sustainable management system addressed to slow down the process of saltwater intrusion and, on the other, satisfy human requirements, it is important to develop a flexible scenario analysis system that considers changes of land-use and inputs to the hydrogeological system, also in relation to climate change. In this study, the innovative Soil Water Balance code (SWB) has been applied to the Muravera plain groundwater body to calculate spatial and temporal variations of groundwater recharge. The code calculates the recharge (R) by using geographic system (GIS) data layers in combination with tabular climatological data. It is based on a modified Thornthwaite - Mather soil water balance approach, with components of the soil water balance calculated at a daily time-step. A combined experimental approach of hydrogeological, satellite remote sensing and pedological methodologies has been applied to derive data layers describing local features of: (1) land-use classification, (2) hydrologic soil group, (3) flow direction, and (4) soil-water capacity. The code has proved to be promising for the effective infiltration assessment and it can be easily updated with high resolution data acquired in the field and from satellite images

    A new species of Lophorrhina Westwood, 1842, L. garnieri sp. nov., was recently discovered in the Labwor Hills range of north-eastern Uganda and is here described. It differs substantially from its closest relative, L. pentachordia (Klug, 1835), particularly at the level of male clypeus but also in the aedeagal parameres, which show an expanded apical surface with lateral projections. In the male of the new species, the clypeus exhibits a smaller apical horn and a narrow and elongate frontal horn, which actually takes the shape of a tapering ridge, rather than a true laminar horn, as is the case in the male L. pentachordia. Other major differences between the two species are manifested in the much more extensive light-yellow ornamentation that characterises the dorsal habitus of L. garnieri in comparison to L. prentachordia and the less protruding and angulate, rather than round, mesometasternal process exhibited by the new species. The female of L. garnieri remains unfortunately unknown. It is likely that the new species represents an isolated population that has remained separated from its relatives through events related to the formation of the East African Great Rift System and for a period long enough to result in speciation. The distribution of the species could potentially include partially connected ranges in western Kenya and South Sudan. In the process of investigating the relationship between this new species and its closest relative, it has also emerged that little information is currently available on the distribution range and biology/ecology of L. pentachordia. A comprehensive data record on its distribution range and period of activity is, therefore, provided here, along with basic information on its habitat preferences, adult diet and response to trapping methods

    It is shown that under the old concept of Platyja cyanocraspis Hampson, 1922 at least six species are intermingled, including two sympatric sibling ones from New Guinea. Four such species are new to science and are herein described, namely Platyja subtracta sp. n. (New Guinea), P. togutila sp. n. (Halmahera), P. vityaz sp. n. (Bismarck Archipelago) and P. yaleyambae sp. n. (Louisiades), while a fifth one from Buru and Ceram is upgraded from subspecific status as P. lecerfi A.E. Prout, 1922 stat. n. A singleton from New Britain (Bismarck Archipelago) closely albeit not entirely matching P. vityaz is also discussed. &nbsp

    How does green tax impact on eco-innovation in the United States?

    This note aims at analysing the relationship between environmental taxation (at national level) and innovation performance in the biofuel industry in the United States. Green innovation is currently perceived as a critical field for policy makers to enhance the necessary shift to a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy, but it is seldom investigated or specifically targeted in the innovation literature, and many of its specific attributes fail to be taken into account. Moreover, it is important to understand the mechanisms linking public policies and innovation incentives in order to inform policy makers on the possible consequences of adopting alternative policy mixes (Del Rio González, 2009). Governments, indeed, can either support technology development (supply push) or create new markets (demand pull) for environmental technologies (Horbach et al., 2012; Peters et al., 2012; Norberg-Bohm, 2000) e.g. by imposing a carbon tax. The main goal of this study is precisely to understand the strength of the relationship between this demand-pull policy-instrument and the innovation performance in a specific field of research, the biofuel, which is highly dependent on environmental regulations

Per questo essi sono un concentrato di storia della scuola, in quanto uniscono aspetti che vengono solitamente definiti tradizionali e innovativi. In questo saggio vengono esaminati alla luce di un concetto che di recente si è affermato nella ricerca storico-didattica: l’alfabetizzazione storica. Si mostra in che modo questi strumenti possano contribuire al conseguimento di tale obiettivo.     Assessment of water quality along Greater Zab River within Iraqi lands

    The current study examined the assessment of the waters of the Greater Zab River GZR because it represents the most important and largest tributary of the Tigris River due to its participation in about 40% of the Tigris River water and because it is a large basin and catchment area. The GZR consists of the gathering of streams, starting from the areas near Lake Van, and then entering Iraqi lands in the Kurdistan region towards the Tigris River. It passes through several geological formations, most of which are containing carbonate rocks composed of calcite and dolomite, which have solubility due to the effect of rainwater. Therefore, several streams gather and empty into the main valley GZR carrying the weathering products of these rocks as soluble ions. It was found through chemical analyzes of the main cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) and anions (HCO3-, SO4=, Cl-, NO3-), as well as measuring the pH, electrical conductivity (E.c.), total dissolved salts (TDS), total hardness (TH) and turbidity (Tr.), The GZR waterfalls within the natural limits set by the World Health Organization for drinking purposes through the use of the water quality index (WQI) as well as its suitability for agricultural purposes according to the standards of Sodium Percentage (SSP), Sodium Adsorption Ratio, (SAR), and the amount of Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC).
