Use of a temperature-measuring chain for the reconstruction of the vertical thermal disturbance induced by an open-loop groundwater heat pump system
Open-loop groundwater heat pumps (GWHP) currently represent one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly air-conditioning systems for densely urbanised areas. Depending on the use mode, energy can be extracted or injected into a shallow aquifer. Among the technical aspects associated with GWHPs that need to be constantly controlled, there is the development of a thermally affected zone (TAZ) around injection points. The environmental impact extent is strongly influenced by the water flow rates and the re-injection modalities. The process of setting up an adequate monitoring system is fundamental for the proper reconstruction of TAZ propagation modes, during each plant-operating season. The work aims to analyse the potentialities of using a new sophisticated water temperature-measuring chain (type PT1004/Pt) as a monitoring tool for the identification of the vertical stratigraphic intervals of the Turin shallow aquifer that are more affected by the thermal disturbances produced by the Politecnico di Torino’s open-loop GWHP system. The installation of such a monitoring instrument, together with the information deriving from the application of the data analysis proposed, can contribute the most in understanding the adequacy of the constructional characteristics of an open-loop system re-injection well to properly disperse vertical thermal perturbations
The egg endoparasitoids of Macrolenes dentipes (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with description of a new species of Aprostocetus Westwood and notes on its host (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae)
A new species of Aprostocetus (Chrysotetrastichus) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), A. macrolenei Viggiani sp. nov., has been obtained from the eggs of Macrolenes dentipes (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Clytrinae) and described. It is confirmed that Bloodiella andalusica Nowicki is also an egg parasitoid of the mentioned host. Biological notes on both parasitoids are given. Phenological data on the chrysomelid host and diagnostic characters of its undescribed first-instar larva are provided
The effect of retirement on the time use of retirees
In this paper we estimate the effect of retirement on the time use of individuals. Retirement makes available a large amount of time that was previously devoted to work. In particular, this will affect the time devoted to leisure, housework, eating and sleeping. The statistical framework adopted in this study is regression in discontinuity. We use the jump in the probability of retirement at age sixty, the minimum legal retirement age in France, to measure the impact of retirement on the time use of retirees. Retirement means more time spent on household chores, sleep, leisure and meals. The magnitude of the effects may vary between men and women. The amount of time devoted to domestic tasks increases more for retired men than for retired women. However, this increase is not sufficient to close the gender gap in unpaid work
Lobbying for Design Protection: a Perspective on France and the United States During the First Half of the Twentieth Century
Saline intrusion: a potential risk for coastal aquifer management in sea level rise scenarios the case study of an adaptation plan for the municipality of Fano
The work reported in this paper is part of a European Union project called ASTERIS and co-funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme. The paper summarises the expected environmental changes resulting from North Adriatic sea level rise due to climate change, and the findings of a risk analysis of saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers, at both regional and local scale. Starting from this scenario, and through a review of best practices, we set up an adaption plan with a view to mitigating the environmental and socio-economic damage due to the expected increase in salinisation along the coastal aquifers in the municipality of Fano (Pesaro province, Marche region, Italy). The municipal adaptation plan identifies the actions to be taken for sustainable use of groundwater, i.e. maintaining freshwater baseflow towards the sea, relocating the pumping systems to lower the interface zone, and creating barriers to saltwater ingression. The suggested adaptation measures were spatially distributed on the basis of the hydrogeological effects expected in the different zones of the coastal aquifer. These measures involve different groups of stakeholders playing key roles in the use of groundwater resources: owners of domestic wells, industrial and commercial water users depending on groundwater resources, managers of integrated water systems, urban planners, farmers, and tourist operators. Particular emphasis was placed on surface water bodies inside the town, which are in direct connection with seawater and exposed to salt wedge seepage during summers. Monitoring transects and threshold values were established in selected test sites. With regard to the progression of the saltwater intrusion process in future decades, “dynamic updating” of the adaptation plan, supported by field observations, appeared to be the most suitable method
Comparative analysis of the population structure of Crematogaster subdentata and Lasius neglectus in the primary and secondary ranges (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
The population structure of Crematogaster subdentata Mayr, 1877 in the primary (native) (Uzbekistan) and secondary ranges (Crimea, Rostov-on-Don) is analyzed. The data obtained indicate an uncommon behavior for invasive ants – the formation of supercolonies in the primary range (the size of the foraging area is about 600 m2) in the urban territory. Nesting in houses and in trunks of old trees occurs both in the zone of invasion and in the primary range. The data of the distribution of the second invasive species in the same regions – Lasius neglectus Van Loon et al., 1990 are provided. Comparison of the population structure (ratio of the mono- and polycalic colonies, presence of the supercolonies and their sizes), parameters of the colonies (average number of the nests and forage trees per colony) showed the ad- vantage of Crematogaster subdentata over Lasius neglectus, which is gradually crowded out by the first species in the places of contact
Larval morphology and life history of Ascalaphus dicax Walker, 1853 (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae, Ascalaphinae)
The larvae of Ascalaphus dicax are redescribed based on specimens reared under laboratory conditions. The third instar larva of this species resembles in overall morphology the congener A. festivus, though differing in body pattern and arrangement of thoracic and abdominal setiferous processes
