    Field investigation and dynamic analysis for debris flow in weijia gully of beichuan county (china) after the wenchuan earthquake

    A great amount of mountain hazards were triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake, such as rock falls, avalanches, landslides, debris flows and dammed lakes. Heavy rain on 24th September 2008 initiated debris flows in Weijia Gully of Beichuan County, which resulted in serious damage to infrastructures and lifelines. In this paper, the debris ow was investigated and analyzed. The results show that solid loose materials, microtopography and rainfall are the main reason for the event. The total loose mass generated by the collapse and landslides reaches about 2.69×105 m3, which provides abundance material. The conditions of the surface water infiltration, runoff and flow concentration are changed by strong surface disturbance and large-scale destructive vegetation damage, which is beneficial to the formation of the erosion and flood peak. The rainfall was 272.7 mm from 23 to 24 September, 2008 in the study area, and the maximum rain reached 41 mm one hour. Velocity, peak discharge, sediment discharge and impulsive force were calculated. The results were compared with investigation, which provide reference for the design of debris flow protection

    La moda è un’istituzione sociale storicamente determinata che alimenta il cambiamento attraverso un turn over in innovazione e novità e che diventa semprepiù pervasiva a seconda dell’entità della quota di popolazione che ha le risorse – siano esse economiche, culturali o sociali – per accedere alla moda stessa. Una forte e decisa spinta all’incremento delle opportunità a tale accesso si è avuta tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e la seconda metà del Novecento. Sono già state fornite esaurienti illustrazioni delle cause di ordine economico e sociale che hanno prodotto tali progressi, mentre minore attenzione è stata dedicata alle modalità di interazione tra moda e sistemi politici. Se è vero, come ha affermato Yuniya Kawamura che “In alcune società dove l’ideologia dominante è antipatica al cambiamento e al progresso sociale, la moda non può esistere”, allora il secolo compreso tra il 1860 e il 1960, in cui in Europa si sono succeduti governi liberali, regimi socialisti e nazisti, dittature fasciste e, infine, regimi democratici, offre l’opportunitàdi analizzare questo tema in una stimolante prospettiva comparativa

    Geochemical assessment of heavy elements in sediments of main Wadis of Western Part of Mosul City, Iraq

    To assess the quality of sediment as it is an essential environmental indicator of water contamination due to sediments represent a permanent or temporary trap for various pollutants, a geochemical study was performed for sediments of four main wadis (Ugab, Al-Yarmouk, Al-Ein, and Al-Mamoun) in the western part of Mosul city, Iraq. Mosul city is surrounded from the western side of the right part by high areas represented by Atshan, Sheikh Ibrahim, Adayah, and Allan anticlines, this topographic situation imposes the wadis to pass the city towards the Tigris River. These wadis contain sediments derived from the exposed rocks of Fat’ha Formation hich consist of limestone, gypsum, and marl rocks in addition to the Quaternary deposits and soils. These wadis pass from residential areas with high population density and diverse activities (domestic, industrial, commercial, and agricultural), so these wadis are used as dumping sites for solid waste and wastewater. Twenty-five samples were analyzed chemically by X-ray fluorescence technique to determine the major and minor oxides, heavy elements in the German-Iraqi laboratory a the University of Baghdad. The organic matter and loss on ignition were performed in the geochemical laboratory at the department of geology in Mosul University. The major xides were; SiO2 (25.22-37.22) wt%, CaO (20.32-33.59) wt%, Al2 O3 (5.50-8.31) wt%, Fe2 O3 (3.86-6.10) wt%, MgO (2.15- .30) wt%, and CO2 (7.42-16.79) wt%, minor oxides were; TiO2 (0.52-0.78) wt%, Na2 O (0.37-1.08) wt%, K2 O (0.88-1.16) wt%, P2 O5 (0.12-0.63) wt%, SO3 (0.23-1.39) wt%, and Cl (0.01-0.05) wt%, Organic matter (OM) was (4.47-17.72) wt%. Heavy elements were; Cr (170-399) ppm, Ni (91-157) ppm, Cu (27-151) ppm, Zn (83-735) ppm, Pb (12-536) ppm, and As (4-10) ppm. The factor analysis sorts three main components representing 78,45 of total variance were (43,84, 27,39, 7,23) for the first, second and third factors, respectively, that reflect the controlling of elements distribution in the mineral groups of the sediments; the group of organic matter and secondary minerals, the clay minerals group, and the iron oxides group. In addition to the carbonate group. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicates that in two industrial areas in Ugab wadi and Al-Yarmouk wadi there were highest concentrations of polluted elements in relation to the rest of wadis, and therefore these sites seemingly had high levels of pollution compared to other sites that appeared to have been moderately polluted.     A Comprehensive 3D geological model of the North-Eastern sector of the San Leo plateau

    The town of San Leo, situated in the northern Apennines of Italy, is subject to slope instability phenomena due to its geological/structural setting. The 3D geological model of the eastern sector of the San Leo rocky plateau has been developed through the integration of data obtained from laser scanning and digital photogrammetric surveys along with core drilling geomechanical analysis. The geological features have been integrated into one single model that enables the visualization of all structural features of the plateau, including superficial and in-depth discontinuities. The model highlights how the area rear of the northeastern scarp, formed by the 2014 landslide event, is highly fractured, whereas the eastern cliff presents lower fracture intensity. Two possible collapse scenarios have been simulated in relation to the fracture analysis that as been carried and emulating the 2014 failure mechanism, that involved a rock volume around 330.000 m3. The analysis of persistence of the fractures involved in these scenarios indicate that such events appear not to be imminent at the present time

    Engineering geological investigation of the Fontane landslide (Eastern Liguria, Italy)

    This study deals with both the engineering-geological and kinematic characterization of the Fontane landslide based on geological and geophysical field investigations and on geotechnical monitoring campaigns. The coupled analysis of stratigraphic boreholes and of seismic refraction tomography profiles allowed to constrain the geometry of the landslide body. The outcomes showed that the thickness of the landslide deposit is extremely variable laterally. This observation suggested a complex morphology of the landslide bedrock surface, outlined by infilled V-shaped depressions. Such morphological concavities have been interpreted as hollows/channels carving the substratum. The investigation of the landslide motion revealed that, over the last fifteen years, the landslide kinematic was characterized by the alternation of dormant and active phases together with occasional reactivations. During the active periods, seasonal cyclic movements correlated to the local hydrological regime were found. However, through the analysis of displacement data measured by one fixed inclinometer probe, it was observed that the movements along the slip surface are not synchronous with severe rainfall events. Specifically, it was found that the displacements peaks are attained several days after the highest rainfall levels and are controlled by the increase in pore-water pressure on the slip surface. These findings suggest a delayed response of the landslide kinematic to severe rainstorms

    A new species for the Italian fauna: Aphaenogaster strioloides, not A. crocea, inhabits Pantelleria Island (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

    Species of the recently recognized Aphaenogaster crocea group, which spreads across Canary Islands, Maghreb region and Southern Italy, have frequently been confused with one another and even with species belonging to other groups. We revised the identity of the population previously attributed to A. crocea from the island of Pantelleria (Sicilian Channel) by comparing voucher specimens of the older records as well as newly collected specimens with type specimens and descriptions of the other members of the group. As a result, we re-identify the population from Pantelleria as A. strioloides, a species so far known to occur exclusively in Algeria and Tunisia. Fi- nally, we discuss the key diagnostic features of this species
