Il contributo all’impresa di Fiume da parte dell’Esercito italiano attraverso l’analisi della Relazione sui fatti di Fiume del Generale dell’Esercito Pecori Giraldi
The Role of the Italian Army in the Fiume Enterprise Through the Analysis of the Report on the events in Fiume by Army General Pecori Giraldi.
The article focuses on the analysis of a document preserved at the Archivio dell’Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore dell’Esercito (AUSSME), an investigation written by General Guglielmo Pecori Giraldi between September and December 1919: the Report on the events in Fiume by Army General Pecori Giraldi.Observations and disciplinary proposals to the Minister of War. The report was commissioned by the Extraordinary Commissioner of Venezia Giulia, Pietro Badoglio, in order to highlight the collusion and involvement of the Italian Army with regard to Gabriele d’Annunzio’s enterprise. The article aims to offer a critical analysis of the aforementioned source about the Adriatic sedition, examining it in the light of the context in which it was produced and in comparison with other documents, focusing on the points where convergences or contradictions emerge most clearly
Military Justice During Italian Fascism: Culture, Politics and Law in the War Courts. The Exemplary Case of Umberto Meranghini
The history of the Italian military magistracy during the fascist wars still awaits a thorough analysis. Research on the judiciary system often neglects military jurisdiction. Yet, military courts had a fundamental function during the dictatorship: the courts were instrumental for the implementation of political goals, reflecting a characteristic of the totalitarian tendencies of the fascist regime. This article aims at answering questions still debated in historiography. Until recently, too little attention has been paid to judicial documents – including files of the magistrates – which can help clarify how pervasive was fascist ideology in the management of the judicial sector, particularly in connection to military justice. In this regard, the case of the military magistrate Umberto Meranghini is exemplary. The article mainly highlights the kinds of relations established between fascist political power and military magistrates that supported the fascist repressive system
Flood hazard analysis in the Oliveto River Basin (Southern Italy)
Generally, a flood is a temporary flooding of areas that usually are not covered with water. The main driving factors are heavy rainfall, bridge obstructions, dam break, land use change, anthropogenic pressure etc. In many cases, individual driving factors are analyzed without an integrated analysis of all the main driving factors. The paper describes a case study on the flood hazard assessment in the Oliveto River basin through a multi-hazard analysis. In this analysis geomorphological, sedimentological, climatic, hydrological, and hydraulic aspects, together with the identification of criticalities that can increase the hydraulic hazard, were analyzed to identify areas subject to potential flooding. The paper mainly highlighted that a flood hazard analysis, carried out by considering only a single driving factor, can underestimate the hazard. Furthermore, the paper shows how that the analyses on a local scale and not on a basin scale can lead to partial or misleading results. Indeed, the analysis highlighted the possibility of hazard conditions just for non-exceptional events, characterized by a 50-year return period, in absence of dam break and sediment transport. The hazard conditions increase due to the openings in the levees near man-made areas and it can be further increased if a dam break occurs or if the discharge is not only water but also includes sediments and blocks
Use of anionic polyacrylamide to challenge land degradation that led to slope instabilities: preliminary results
Climate change is continuously posing new challenges to land management and conservation in built, populated and agricultural areas. Polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM) offer a suitable tool to stem soil degradation, as well as having a wide range of applications. Informations on polyacrylamide’s use related to soil management were gathered through a literature review involving hundreds of articles. Soil samples were reconstructed in laboratory to observe the effects of PAM application on their physical, volumetric, mechanical, and hydrological properties. Two sets of samples were reconstructed using kaolin and sandy loam soil, respectively, with three different dry densities (varying between 1.2 and 1.6 g/cm3), three different initial water contents (varying between 5% and 40%) and five different polymer application rates (0%, 0.003%, 0.03%, 0.3%, and 1% by weight). The polymer, a granular anionic polyacrylamide, provided by Micronizzazione Innovativa Srl, has been manually applied and mixed with samples; then left to dry undisturbed. Preliminary results showed that the increase of PAM percentage in samples generally coincided with increase of liquid limit and plasticity index, causing at the same time a more gradual and regular release of water compared to untreated samples. These preliminary results highlight the possible application of PAM to improve other soil features which could impact on slope instabilities occurrence, in a frame of sustainable solutions for the reduction of landslides susceptibility, hazard and risk
Field observation of the predation of an adult of Podarcis muralis (Laurenti, 1768) (Squamata: Lacertidae) by Mantis religiosa religiosa (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mantodea: Mantidae)
A case of predation on an adult Podarcis muralis by Mantis religiosa religiosa in Italy, is here recorded. Published records related to predatory activity of this mantis on saurians are summarized, and the possible cause of such an unusual behaviour is discussed
Public geography and citizen science: participatory practices for action research
The paper addresses the relationships between geography and the emerging domain of citizen science as a possible scenario for the strengthening of public geography. Drawing from the Manifesto of Public Geography published in 2018 and from the following contributions, the paper highlights how core geographical concepts (space, place, location, distributions, territorial systems) are applied in citizen science activities and how the principles of citizen science, such as participation and field work can fertilize future paths for a public geography. The paper describes the phases and methods of citizen science and then explains that the relationship with geography is built on core spatial dimensions, the creation crowdsourced information and place making
Is The Military Revolution dead yet?
The Military Revolution: Military Innovation and the Rise of the West, 1500–1800 is now approaching its 35th anniversary, and its author intends to update and restate in a new edition the original assertions of the 1988 edition (with one exception: we need to discard the fallacious term ‘trace italienne’), while applying the theoretical framework of ‘punctuated equilibrium’ to military affairs. The new edition of The Military Revolution will situate a series of episodes of intense change within a prolonged process of evolution and adaptation. This essay offers the opening arguments of the new edition of The Military Revolution, and includes (by way of example) the analysis of one revolutionary episode – the battle of Lützen (1632) – which combines the results of recent ‘battlefield archaeology’ with the numerous surviving eye-witness accounts.
Aerial photogrammetry used as a quick procedure for rock mass stability analysis in a nature reserve
The geostructural characterization of rock clusters, located in poorly accessible areas of nature reserves, represents a challenge for the specialized technicians who carry out field rock mass measurements. This paper aims to highlight the advantages in adopting a quick approach that introduces the photogrammetric technique to overcome the limitations of conventional field measurements. In this study, the aerial photogrammetry, combined with the powerful algorithms of the Structure from Motion technique, allowed generating a detailed rock mass model of a sub-vertical cliff affected by instability features threatening the safe fruition of a nature reserve. Quantitative and qualitative data on the spatial orientation of discontinuities and on location of major structural elements were achieved. The digitally derived spatial data were used to perform a kinematic analysis of the rock mass, highlighting the most recurrent unstable failure patterns, for which the stability and the probability of failure were numerically calculated in both static and dynamic conditions
