Considering the evolution of the PCI’s Europeanism means paying attentionto one of the aspects that have contributed to marking a culture, that of theItalian Communist Party, which was continually committed to identifying themodern features of a political project rooted in tradition. In this perspective, the electoral campaigns for the European Parliament help us to understand howcrucial it was for the party to engage in the European context to face the mainpolitical and economic emergencies of those years by re-proposing, at a supranationallevel, the confrontation/clash between progressives and conservatives. On the other hand, however, one can also identify in the PCI’s Europeanismthe sense of a national burden that weighed on the party, namely that of makingchanges to the Italian system

A monitoring project focused on saproxylic beetles of “Sasso Fratino Integral Nature Reserve” (Bagno di Romagna, FC), allowed to confirm the presence of the bark beetle Eidophelus caucasicus (Lindemann, 1877) for the Italian fauna. This species was previously known only for “Venezia Tridentina” (corresponding to the current Trentino-South Tyrol) from an old record, never confirmed for Italy since

The rare W-Mediterranean carabid beetle Laemostenus barbarus (Lucas, 1846) is here reported for the first time from Sardinia and confirmed to Calabria. The currently known distribution and ecology of this species are briefly discussed

Lectotype designation and the southernmost collection record of the ground beetle Pterostichus macrogenys Bates, 1883 (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

This study clarifies taxonomic problems in Pterostichus macrogenys Bates, 1883, a Japanese endemic flightless carabid beetle. Specifically, to address the lack of examination of the male genitalia of the type specimens and a potential risk regarding nomenclatural stability, the syntype male is designated as the lectotype and its genitalia (including the sufficiently inflated endophallus) are examined. The results confirm that the species previously treated as P. macrogenys is indeed P. macrogenys. Additionally, a male specimen from Mt. Amagisan on the Izu Peninsula is reported as the southernmost collection record of this species

    Il PSI e l’europeismo: dal Midas a Maastricht (1976-93)

    Get PDF
The essay, which opens with a reflection on the roots of socialist Europeanismand draws also from unpublished archival papers, addresses the theoretical propositionsand practical initiatives of the PSI to promote the process of Europeanintegration. The period under consideration starts with the election of BettinoCraxi to the secretariat of the party and ends in 1993. This was a year in which, after the end of the so-called First Republic followed the conclusion of the ColdWar, Europe was changing its face as a consequence of the Maastricht Treaty.Despite the presence of significant innovations, from the reflections of PSI leadersand like-minded intellectuals (Mario Zagari, Gaetano Arfè, Antonio Giolitti,Giorgio Ruffolo, Michele Achilli and Craxi himself) emerge contradictionsand problems that, still today, weigh on the operation of the European Union, with particular reference to both the complex relationship between the peoplerepresented and their representatives, and the great difficulty of building a commonidentity among the citizens of different countries to meet the challenges ofthe globalized world

By-pass sediment system to replace longshore current in harbour areas

This paper is part of the results achieved in Tech4You project T4Y S2G2PP2 funded by PNRR (Piano Nazionale di Ricerca e Resilienza). The Tech4You project focused on the silting process affecting the Cetraro harbour mouth (Calabria, southern Italy). The study area is located along the northern Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast and is part of a physiographic unit with a west-southwest fetch greater than 1650 km. The wave climate is characterised by a significant wave height of 0.65m (average period of 5.15s) and 1.01 m (average period of 5.7s) offshore and inshore, respectively. The longshore flow of sediments (about 80,000 m3/yr), moving from north to south, is interrupted by the harbour pier producing silting (~10,000 m3/yr sediment deposited at the harbour mouth), and heavy coastal erosion in the down-drift sector. The sediment production in the Aron River catchment (representing the main sediment feed in the physiographic unit) by Gravrilovic model was also studied, with detailed analysis of soil use through multispectral analysis, and estimate an average volume of ~30,000 m3/yr. A bypass system was designed, consisting of a submerged pump installed at the endof the pier on the up-drift side of the harbour, to replace the original longshore current, contrasting simultaneously both mouth silting and erosion processes in the down-drift coastline

Groundwater flow numerical analysis of the Sibillini Hydrostructure (Central Italy): system characterization and evaluation of hydrogeological changes after the Mw 6.5 Norcia Earthquake

    No full text
The October 30th Norcia earthquake originated from the rupture of different segments of the Vettore-Bove normal fault system. The co-seismic rupture propagated up to the surface, causing important faulting and affecting the hydrodynamics of the Basal Aquifer of the Sibillini Mts. carbonate hydrostructure. Several long-lasting hydrogeological changes occurred at springs over the impacted area. Such changes indicate the disruption of the hydraulic sealing effect of the Vettore fault because of the co-seismic dislocation and the consequent groundwater flow increase through the broken fault. This work aims at characterizing the complex regional hydrogeologic system of the Sibillini Mts. and evaluating the important earthquake-induced hydrogeological changes by means of numerical modelling. A robust conceptual model has been defined according to tectonic and hydrogeological data and based on a 3D reconstruction of the Basal Aquifer. The regional-scale extent of the model allowed us the adoption of a simplified approach treating the carbonate aquifer as a continuous and homogeneous equivalent porous medium, while faults were considered as hydraulic barriers with lower permeability. Simulation results, aligned with the observed variations, highlight the crucial role of faults in influencing the hydrodynamics of carbonate hydrostructures

Evidence of unstable rock cliffs from vibrational behavior: challenges in coupling engineering-geological and geophysical approaches

    No full text
Over the last decades, engineering-geology has increasingly made use of multidisciplinary approaches aimed at detecting physical-mechanical characteristics of the subsoil in the near surface, to better understand and monitor the dynamics of natural processes as potential causes of natural risk. Geophysical investigations by passive seismic in the near surface became over time a fundamental tool to interpretate the vibrational behaviors of rock volumes, already displaced by physical discontinuities (i.e. rock mass joints). The frequencies of oscillation, amplified by dislodged blocks, are polarized in specific directions, and related to eigenmodes which depend on their degrees of freedom, mass, stiffness and damping coefficient. On the other hand, the superposition of soft soil on bedrock induces stratigraphic amplification which may not be polarized if they occur in properly one-dimensional contexts. This contribution focuses on the aforementioned investigation techniques, through a review of case studies which allowed learning their diagnostic potential and, at the same time, conceptualizing their functionality and adaptability (under certain representativeness constraints) to different morphoevolutionary contexts. The hazard zoning for rock landslide, which have been created to date by these techniques, appear to be fully integrated into thematic maps on active landslide processes and related spatial distribution, seismic microzonation maps and related areas of instability, residual risk perimeter maps aimed at preventing access or usability of urbanized areas

Educationally heterogamous unions and country level inequalities in Europe before and after 1990

    Get PDF
Scholars are interested in the association between partnership formation and socioeconomic status due to the link with the reproduction of socioeconomic inequalities. Previous findings showed that highly educated individuals are less likely than low educated to form heterogamous unions, i.e., when partners hold different levels of education. The educational gradient in heterogamy has been linked to the level of societal openness in a country. Still, it is not clear-cut to what extent these findings are generalizable across periods and countries. Using Generations and Gender Surveys (GGS) data of 15 European countries, we analyse the association between the educational gradient in heterogamous union formation and country level indicators of socioeconomic inequalities before and after 1990, applying a two-stage regression approach. We found that people with a low level of education are more prone to form heterogamous unions relatively to the highly educated. The Gini Index mildly explains the variation across countries of the gradient in heterogamy. For unions formed after 1990, we found that an increase in economic inequality is associated with a less steep negative educational gradient in heterogamy. Our study highlights the complexity of studying country level variation in educational assortative mating, all the more that it may entail differences related to the meaning of education in each country
