Beyond borders: Building capacity and enhancing institutional resources for U.S.-Mexico virtual exchange initiatives
No full textAs the popularity of virtual exchange (VE) has increased worldwide in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many higher education institutions are seeking the most efficient ways of building capacity for this practice. Using the context of VE implementations between the United States and Mexico as a case study, this research aimed to identify strategies for VE capacity-building that can be useful to institutions in a variety of contexts. The study included only instructors with experience implementing VE, the majority of whom had implemented VE multiple times, and used mixed methods data gathered via a questionnaire and focus groups. The findings identified specific examples of the types of resources that higher education institutions in the U.S. and Mexico may consider investing in, such as increased support for teaching with technology and different types of incentives for instructors’ continued VE engagement. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for strategies that universities worldwide can use to enhance the support they offer their VE instructors, including resource sharing with partner institutions and VE organizations

We boiled and roasted shellfish, created a midden, and trampled specific parts of it. This report describes the choices we made in the process, the materials we used, the unexpected first results, and some further considerations. We will not delve deeper into the scientific nature of the endeavour, as the micromorphological work is still ongoing

No full textChance find: A human tooth from a field near Noordhorn, municipality of Westerkwartier (Gr.) This article describes the discovery of and research into a human tooth from a field just west of the village of Noordhorn (province of Groningen). On September 30, 1581, a battle took place on this site. The molar likely surfaced due to dredging or ploughing work in the field. The research into the molar focused on the question of whether the find had a link with the 16th-century battle. However, using 14C dating, we found that this tooth was in fact much older than expected. This discovery adds previously unknown layers of history to this area. In addition to providing information about the person to whom the molar belonged, the research also indicates that a burial ground likely lay in the area

Spinoza\u27s Really Confused Ideas
No full textSpinoza’s epistemology aims at the development of “adequate” and the removal of “confused” ideas. Spinoza’s theory of confusion raises many questions, however. It has often been thought that the confusion of an idea is mind-relative, such that an idea might be confused in my mind but adequate in God’s. In this paper I argue that confusion cannot be mind-relative, because an idea’s confusion is determined by what it represents and for Spinoza, ideas are individuated by their representational content. Instead, I propose that although it is possible to consider one and the same idea both adequately and confusedly, what such considerings pick up on are mind-independent features of ideas
The Reception of Spinoza in Japan
No full textThe reception of Spinoza in Japan was affected by the problems of rapid modernization from the nineteenth century onwards: the split of the mind into Western and non-Western. We shall look at how Spinoza\u27s ideas were received across the four phases of the assimilation of Western philosophy into Japan. Namely, initiation (1860s-1880s), establishment (1890s-1910s), re-appropriation (1920s-1945) and de-ideologisation (1945-present). Although his pantheistic monism was accepted from the outset fairly easily in the Buddhist cultural climate, his philosophy revealed resistant to appropriation by the language of dialectics such as that of the Kyoto School in wartime, which sought Japanese identity in the dialectical self-denial of the borrowed Westernness in the course of the “historical world”. This could provide a clue to understanding the current younger generation\u27s embrace of Spinoza
