Prison Epistolarity and the Crisis of Politically Motivated Incarceration in the Letters of Abd al-Azim Anis

    No full text
On 1 January 1959, Egypt witnessed a nationwide mass arrest of the political opposition. University Professor Abd al-Azim Anis (1923–2009) was among the hundreds of Egyptian activists detained in what came to be known as the 1959 Detention Campaign. This paper reads the published prison letters Anis wrote during his politically motivated incarceration between January 1959 and April 1964. The first section of the paper traces the epistolary practices Anis adopted and/or abandoned to subvert the repressive prison conditions and the violation of his right to correspondence. The paper contends that a key point of departure into prison epistolarity is recognising how the material conditions of the crisis situation command the performance of the epistolary act and the production of the prison letter as a testimonial object. The second section of the paper discusses the public afterlife of Anis’s prison letters as crisis narratives and counter public records on the 1959 Detention Campaign. The paper investigates Anis’s prison letters as primary sources of historical memory and knowledge on the gradual construction of the punitive logic regulating the citizen-state relationship in Egypt. The paper argues that it is particularly the epistolary mode of mediating the crisis that allows Anis’s first-hand account to date and dissect the accumulation of politically motivated punishment

    The Fence

    No full text
‘The Fence’ weaves a critical reading of the author’s unusual first day in the UK in 1987 with a reflection on borders and discrimination applied to both humans and birds. The contingency and instability of borders create a relative and precarious status when it comes to human and nonhuman animals; this shifting position is subject to socio-economics, history, legislation and the politics of representation that contribute to the production of othering. Alongside societal contingencies, this work emphasises the role of individual agency which can affect and override the outcomes predicated by these structural limitations

Semi-Automatic Spontaneous Language Analysis (SASTA): Towards an efficient method for determining the language profile of children with DLD

    No full text
Grammatical analyses of spontaneous speech samples can play a key role in the action-oriented diagnosis of developmental language disorders. Speech therapists are generally familiar with analysis methods such as TARSP and STAP and recognize their importance. However, their use is limited because they are time-consuming and require specific knowledge and skills. In this article, we describe a computer application, SASTA, that semi-automatically performs grammatical analyses of children’s utterances. This can make language sample analysis faster and easier. We outline how SASTA works, focusing on the processing of deviant grammatical structures and incomplete or incorrect word realizations, which frequently occur in child language. Tests comparing the analyses generated by SASTA with those of trained human analysts show that SASTA has an accuracy of 80% or better. We expect that performance will continue to improve through ongoing research and development, and we conclude that SASTA has the potential to become a valuable tool in the diagnosis of language development disorders

Exile and Diasporic Memory Activism in Colombian Women’s Writing

    No full text
This article explores how, in the context of the country’s most recent peace process, Colombian women memory activists have challenged the erasure of Colombian exile from both narratives of Colombian political violence and the wider scholarship on Latin American exile. Focusing on creative forms of memory activism deployed by the writer, Fabiola Calvo Ocampo, and the collective Mujer Diáspora, the article analyses how their individual and collective literary-testimonies contest the negation of their victimhood in Colombia and intervene in disputes over the meaning of exile in the Colombian context. Yet, while making visible the trauma of exile, the article shows how these creative texts also seek to move beyond dominant theoretical representations of the woman exile as being liberated from the nation, or nostalgically yearning for it, to instead configure her as an activist subject

How Does Creation Speak? Interwoven Preaching Between Mindfulness and Resistance

    No full text
By drawing on personal experiences with animals and the practice of mindful movement, this article explores how preaching might be understood as an interwoven practice of mindfulness and resistance. It asks how preaching might emerge not merely as speech about creation, but in resonance with it. Following the rhythm of mindful walking, the article itself becomes a meditative, theological journey through five steps: arriving, sensing estrangement, walking as resistance, preaching in relation, and returning. In doing so, this article reframes homiletical reflection as a shared, embodied, and more-than-human practice that listens and speaks with, rather than speaks about, creation
