Nonparametric estimation of the diffusion coefficient from S.D.E. paths
Consider a diffusion process X=(X_t), with t in [0,1], observed at discrete times and high frequency, solution of a stochastic differential equation whose drift and diffusion coefficients are assumed to be unknown. In this article, we focus on the nonparametric esstimation of the diffusion coefficient. We propose ridge estimators of the square of the diffusion coefficient from discrete observations of X and that are obtained by minimization of the least squares contrast. We prove that the estimators are consistent and derive rates of convergence as the size of the sample paths tends to infinity, and the discretization step of the time interval [0,1] tend to zero. The theoretical results are completed with a numerical study over synthetic data.
Recommendation of TC RILEM TC 274-TCE: 3-point bending test procedure for earthen bricks—quality control of earth bricks for structural masonry by flexural strength
International audienceBuilding with unstabilised earth bricks (EB) as units for structural masonry walls offers a sustainable alternative to mitigate resource depletion's negative impact and global warming. Using locally sourced earth for EB production is required to achieve these benefits. This leads to large variations in material composition. Consequently, quality control becomes critical to ensure adequate mechanical performance of the masonry units. In the framework of the RILEM TC 274-TCE, the characterisation of the flexural strength of bricks has been examined. A comprehensive inter-laboratory campaign involving seven laboratories across three countries was conducted, during which flexural tests were performed on 98 bricks. This article details the TC 274-TCE recommendations on the procedure to conduct a 3-point bending test on an EB. Key test parameters such as specimen pre-conditioning, setup boundary conditions, loading rate and determination of material flexural strength are discussed. The calculation of flexural strength was evaluated by comparing results obtained from the beam theory model and a solid mechanics approach, validated through finite element modelling. The findings confirm that the 3-point bending test is a reliable method to assess the mechanical performance of EB and to control their quality
Non-financial indicators and sustainability reporting. An ethnographic investigation of dilemmas
FNEGE 3, ABS 2International audiencePurpose - Attention to what the implementation of sustainability reporting (SR) can entail is ethnographically studied in this article. This practice-based study clarifies dilemmas in the “objective mirage” of non-financial indicators. We contribute to the management control literature by showing how the quest for transparency is problematic when the vague and plural being of the object to be controlled is acknowledged.Design/methodology/approach - Ethnography undertaken in an international French construction company revealed contested indicators and conflicts between: (1) on-site project managers, (2) corporate social responsibility directors at subsidiary level and (3) the SR demands of corporate headquarters. What “is” and how it is “represented” was contested. The indicators that are supposed to serve as “signifiers” or “signs” in reporting were contested.Findings - Conflict occurred in the interpretations and uses of the SR indicators as they were alternately linked to their objects as “icon”, “indexical” and/or “symbol”.Research limitations/implications - The ethnographic research was undertaken in one company. The researcher witnessed coping and contention in SR demands, without being able to prove (or disprove) the suitability of the indicators. There was no direct contact with actual building sites.Practical implications - Contestation over SR indicators is a semiotic fact of life fuelled by the problematic relationship between sustainability reporting and management control. Not more forceful implementation (i.e. more of the same), but complex negotiated uses of indicators are proposed.Originality/value - Ethnographically grounded research into the representational practices (semiotics) of sustainability reporting and management control is as yet exceptional
Molecular Scale Modeling of Coal and Its Behavior
International audienceGeomechanics of Coal Seams explores the evolving role of coal, transitioning from a historically criticized energy source tied to the Industrial Revolution, to a material with the potential to play a significant role in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Traditionally used as raw material, coal now serves as a reservoir for natural gas or carbon dioxide storage, offering a path toward reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite its promise, challenges remain, particularly regarding its geomechanical behavior. This book delves into the unique properties of coal, covering everything from geological foundations to numerical modeling. Aimed at students, researchers, and engineers, the book provides valuable insights applicable to other microporous materials. This chapter focuses on the study of coal through molecular modeling and simulation. The molecular scale is the appropriate level for gaining a detailed understanding of adsorption mechanisms within nanopores. Experimental investigation of mechanics at this scale is highly limited, and molecular simulation offers a complementary approach to experiments, relying on elementary physical interactions between atoms and molecules. The chapter concerns with so-called classical simulations, which are based on empirical interaction potentials between atoms, as opposed to ab initio simulations. However, such simulations remain valuable in coal research, as they help calibrate the empirical interaction potentials used in classical simulations. Classical simulations are, in turn, limited to studying systems no larger than a few tens of nanometers. Molecular approaches enable quantitative predictions of fluid adsorption, both for pure fluids and mixtures in coal, while also helping to understand and model the unusual poro-mechanical couplings
Storytelling and grand strategy in public diplomacy: A case study of the speeches of president Xi Jinping
International audienceAs nation-states seek to cultivate geopolitical advantages, they employ storytelling and strategic narratives to rally domestic and international support, shape perceptions of past and future events, and define adversaries. This study argues that stories about a nation’s vision, mission, and history constitute politicized narratives central to the overarching grand strategy of the state and its leadership. It highlights the role of storytelling in public diplomacy through a case study of China’s evolving soft power strategies, which must be understood in the context of increasing geopolitical tension with Western states—particularly the United States. Positioned at the intersection of public diplomacy and political public relations scholarship, this study draws on public relations frameworks for storytelling, which have largely been overlooked in this context. Analyzing key speeches by President Xi Jinping, the study reveals insights into the Chinese Communist Party’s grand strategy and its broader implications. It argues that storytelling functions as an effective opening strategy in intermestic public diplomacy, bridging the space between early-stage diplomatic engagement and long-term strategic objectives. As such, storytelling by a national leader can be suggestive of future actions, especially when aligned with a broader strategic vision
CoDEx: Combining Domain Expertise for Spatial Generalization in Satellite Image Analysis
International audienceGlobal variations in terrain appearance raise a major challenge for satellite image analysis, leading to poor model performance when training on locations that differ from those encountered at test time. This remains true even with recent large global datasets. To address this challenge, we propose a novel domain-generalization framework for satellite images. Instead of trying to learn a single generalizable model, we train one expert model per training domain, while learning experts' similarity and encouraging similar experts to be consistent. A model selection module then identifies the most suitable experts for a given test sample and aggregates their predictions. Experiments on four datasets (DynamicEarthNet, MUDS, OSCD, and FMoW) demonstrate consistent gains over existing domain generalization and adaptation methods
