Making Urban Data Significant and Meaningful Through a Collaborative Workshop
This article explores the innovative deployment of the "Urban Data Mural" as a participatory design tool in urban sustainability research. Situated within the framework of open science, the project facilitates a dynamic interaction among urban data stakeholders—territorial managers, scientists, and citizens. The mural serves as a platform for these actors to engage directly with data production and utilization processes, thereby addressing common challenges such as data accessibility, comprehension, and origin awareness. Through workshops and collaborative activities, the mural integrates diverse data types—from open data provided by major platforms to sensitive data from research and government sources—into a cohesive system that supports urban planning and policy-making. This approach not only democratizes data access but also enhances stakeholder understanding and contribution to urban sustainability efforts

Cohesive granular material in a rotating drum: flow regimes and size effects
International audienceIn this article, we investigate the behaviour of a cohesive granular material in a rotating drum. We use a model material with tuneable cohesion and vary the dimension of the drum in the radial and axial directions. The results show that the geometry of the drum may play a crucial role in the material dynamics, leading to significant changes in the surface morphology and flow regime. We attribute this behaviour to the fact that an increase in cohesion causes the grains to feel the sidewalls at a greater distance. Finally, we rationalize the results by introducing two dimensionless characteristic lengths, defined as the ratio of the drum dimensions to a cohesive length, which allow for the interpretation of the variation in the surface morphology and of the different flow regimes observed experimentally
Qualitative research and analytical wargaming
As part of the pedagogical and research project in game-oriented learning EdUTeam, several wargaming activities have been deployed at IAE Paris-Est, the university management school of Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC): courses, supervised projects, wargame analyses, etc. (Lépinard, 2024a). In this context, we had the opportunity to participate in multiple activities structured by the French Association for Wargaming Studies (AFEW), established in 2024. Within this revival of French wargaming, one of the areas we aim to develop is analytical wargaming, which refers to wargaming practices designed to generate new knowledge and to solve loosely or unstructured research or operational problems. This involves designing rigorous and reproducible methodologies. This article presents the initial results of this project based on an analytical wargaming experience conducted from February 24 to 27 with a group of 15 second-year master’s students

A mesh based improved plane wave expansion method for complex 2-D phononic crystals
International audienceThis paper introduces a spectral method based on free triangular meshes, termed the mesh based improved plane wave expansion method (MIPWEM), aimed at simplifying the design and analysis of phononic crystals (PnCs) in complex scenarios. This method, built upon the improved plane wave expansion method (IPWEM) theoretical framework, incorporates free triangular meshes to approximate various complex geometries, significantly reducing the derivation costs associated with handling complex inclusions. By varying factors such as the number of plane waves and mesh generation, this paper investigates the computational efficiency of the proposed MIPWEM from different perspectives. Additionally, the method is successfully applied to compute cases with complex geometries. These results further validate the advantages of the new method in handling complex geometries, computational speed, and other aspects. The MIPWEM with superior efficiency, shows great potential for PnCs research in multiphysics and high-frequency applications
Detecting temporal evolutions in 3D lidar point clouds: an operational approach
International audienceAirborne lidar point clouds allow a dense, accurate 3D acquisition of landscapes at large scales. With the increasing number of sensors and applications, multiple surveys can now cover the same area, opening the field for effective and realistic 3D change detection. We propose here an operational approach to capture and quantify various types of changes under several acquisition configurations. A fuzzy logic approach leverages the geometric and semantic change information that was preliminarily captured, subsequently allowing to infer the types of change at a 2 m voxel level. Experiments show the validity of our solution, without supervision, and heuristic parameter tuning
Ten to 15-Year Outcomes of Monoblock Uncemented Dual Mobility Cups
International audienceBackground: Dual mobility cups (DMCs) have effectively prevented dislocations after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, use of these cups in primary THAs remains controversial, especially in young patients. This study aimed to determine the long-term survival rate and functional outcomes of a contemporary DMC used in primary THA. Methods: This retrospective multicenter study identified a cohort of 614 primary THAs performed with the same uncemented monoblock DMC between 2007 and 2010. Survival analysis included 572 THAs, while clinical analysis involved 394 THAs at a minimal follow-up of 10 years. The mean follow-up was 11.1 ± 1.2 years. The mean age was 71.4 ± 11.7 years, with 4.2% of patients under 50 years old. The mean body mass index was 27.0 ± 5.3 kg/m 2 . The 10-year Kaplan-Meier survival rate was calculated based on cup removal for any reason or cup revision for an aseptic reason as the end point. Harris hip scores were collected at the last follow-up. Results: The cup-revision-free survival rate was 98.6% at 10 years and 96.2% at 13 years. No cup revisions were reported due to aseptic loosening or dislocation. The cup revisions were due to infection (7 of 572; 1.2%), acetabular fracture (1 of 572; 0.17%), and psoas impingement due to cup malpositioning (n = 1 of 572; 0.17%). Only 3 dislocations (0.52%) were observed, and they did not require revision. The mean Harris hip score significantly improved from 54.1 ± 14.4 preoperatively to 88.0 ± 14.3 at the last follow-up (p < 0.0001). For patients under 50 years old at the time of surgery, the mean Harris hip score showed significant improvement from 53.0 ± 10.2 preoperatively to 89.7 ± 12.8 at the last follow-up (p < 0.0001), with no significant difference compared with the older patients (p = 0.50). No revision or complication was reported in the younger patient population at 13 years of follow-up. Conclusions: The monoblock uncemented DMC demonstrated excellent survival rates with no DMC-specific complications during a minimum 10-year follow-up. The dislocation rate was very low, and a younger age was not identified as a risk factor for failure. Therefore, monoblock cementless DMCs can be safely used, even in primary THA. Air emissions contribution to complete environmental assessment of multi-recycled road materials incorporating reclaimed bituminous pavement for a better resource management
International audienceThe use of recycled materials as new asphalt pavement coating components is regulated by standards for chemical analysis of leachate and binders. This study is based on air emission contribution and aims at completing the comprehensive framework for Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) acceptance in road construction. The results show that fumes from studied pavement mixes during manufacturing step in laboratory are composed of gaseous and particulate Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). This presence of PAHs in low quantities and in variable proportions depending on the manufacturing process and the mix design. For example, incorporation of 40% recycled material into hot and warm manufacturing process increases total PAH concentrations in emissions by 8% and 26%, respectively. In addition, the results showed that carcinogenic particulate PAH in emissions from mixes incorporating recycled materials are attributable to RAP itself. These results show that pavement materials capture organic compounds generated by road traffic (mainly linked to engine exhaust fumes) functioning as a pollution sink. When the old pavement is recycled as RAP in the manufacture of new pavement mixes, these PAHs are released into the air through the fumes generated and contributed to air quality. This article highlights the importance of integrating a specific analysis of air emissions into the overall environmental characterization with the analysis of some pollutants in addition current tests based on the analysis of solid-state RAPs and eluates from leaching. A specific section devoted to atmospheric emissions should be added to the current standards and will opened to directing road infrastructure construction and maintenance strategies towards more sustainable industrial practices
