    Replication Data for: The flow in the induction and entrance regions of lab-scale wind farms

    This dataset contains all data necesary to produce the figures containing original data in the paper "The flow in the induction and entrance regions of lab-scale wind farms" . It contains particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements of the induction and entrance region of lab-scale wind farms made of rotating wind turbine models and actuator disks. Both aligned and staggered layouts were used, for three different incoming wind directions (0, 15 and 30 degrees).PUBLICATION ABSTRACT: With the increasing demand for wind energy, it is important to be able to understand and predict the available wind resources. To that end, the present wind tunnel study addresses the flow in the induction and entrance region of wind farms through Particle Image Velocimetry, with focus on differences between actuator disks and two-bladed rotating wind turbine models. Both staggered and aligned farm layouts are examined for three different incoming wind directions. For each layout, 69 disks or turbines are used, and the field of view ranges from 12 rotor diameters upstream of the farms to 8 diameters downstream of the first row. The results show that the induction, or blockage effect, is higher for the disks, even though the thrust (or drag) coefficient is the same. In contrast, the wake is stronger downstream of the turbines. The orientation and layout of the farm do not have a major impact on the results. Modal decomposition of the flow shows that the flow structure similarity between the disk and turbines improves downstream of the second row of wake generating objects, indicating that the substitution of wind turbines by actuator disks is more appropriate for wind farms than for the investigation of single wakes

    This dataset contains raw data traces from Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and Microscale Thermophoresis (MST) experiments aimed at determining the binding affinity of peptides with lipid vesicles and lipid nanodiscs. The SPR data consists of responses obtained from cycles of peptide injection over the lipid membrane, with varying peptide concentrations. The MST data includes fluorescence responses obtained from capillaries with different ratios of tested peptides and lipids. Tested hexapeptides were 1-c(WWWRRR), 2-c(WRWRWR), 3-c(WWWKKK), 4-c(WKWKWK) and 5-c(LWwNKr). The lipid compositions used in the experiments were pure 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC), DMPC with 5% (w/w) 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-rac-glycerol) (DMPG), or DMPC with 10% (w/w) lipopolysaccharides from Escherichia coli O111:B4. These data traces are essential for measuring KP (lipid partitioning constant), understanding the peptide-lipid interaction and identifying potential candidates for further analysis

    Convolutional neural network (CNN) approaches available in the current literature are designed to work primarily with low-resolution images. When applied on very large images, challenges related to GPU memory, smaller receptive field than needed for semantic correspondence and the need to incorporate multi-scale features arise. The resolution of input images can be reduced, however, with significant loss of critical information. Based on the outlined issues, we introduce a novel research problem of training CNN models for very large images, and present ‘UltraMNIST dataset’, a simple yet representative benchmark dataset for this task. UltraMNIST has been designed using the popular MNIST digits with additional levels of complexity added to replicate well the challenges of real-world problems. We present two variants of the problem: ‘UltraMNIST classification’ and ‘Budget-aware UltraMNIST classification’. The standard UltraMNIST classification benchmark is intended to facilitate the development of novel CNN training methods that make the effective use of the best available GPU resources. The budget-aware variant is intended to promote development of methods that work under constrained GPU memory. For the development of competitive solutions, we present several baseline models for the standard benchmark and its budget-aware variant. We study the effect of reducing resolution on the performance and present results for baseline models involving pretrained backbones from among the popular state-of-the-art models. Finally, with the presented benchmark dataset and the baselines, we hope to pave the ground for a new generation of CNN methods suitable for handling large images in an efficient and resource-light manner. UltraMNIST dataset comprises very large-scale images, each of 4000x4000 pixels with 3-5 digits per image. Each of these digits has been extracted from the original MNIST dataset. The data were collected as part of the long-term and individual based monitoring program of brown bears by the Scandinavian Brown bear Research Project (www.bearproject.info).Article Abstract - Related PublicationHibernation is an adaptive strategy to survive harsh winter conditions and food shortage. The use of well-insulated winter dens helps animals minimize energy loss during hibernation. Brown bears (Ursus arctos) commonly use excavated dens for hibernation. Physical attributes of excavated dens are expected to impact the bear's heat retention and energy conservation. The objective of this study was to examine the determinants of cavity size of excavated dens and the impact of physical attributes of excavated dens on energy conservation in hibernating bears, hypothesizing that bears excavate dens in a way to minimize heat loss and optimize energy conservation during hibernation. We predicted that den cavity size would be determined by the bear's body size and that older bears would excavate better-fitting cavities to minimize heat loss, due to their previous experience. We further predicted that physical attributes of excavated dens would affect the bears’ posthibernation body condition. Our results revealed that bears excavated a den cavity in relation to their body size, regardless of sex, and that older bears tended to excavate better-fitting den cavities compared to young bears, as we expected. Older bears excavated better-fitting den cavities, suggesting a potentially experience-based shift with age in den-excavation behavior and an optimum cavity size relative to a bear's body size. Our key finding is that insulation of excavated dens provided by wall/rood thickness and bedding materials had a significant positive effect on bears’ posthibernation body condition. We believe that our study provides new insight into how not only the quality of denning habitat, but also the quality of dens may affect hibernating animals, by presenting a potential adaptive aspect of den preparation (age effect on efficiency in den excavation) and effect of den attributes on the posthibernation body condition of brown bears.</p

    DATASET MIGRATED FROM FIGSHARE: Ocular biometry and autorefraction measured during cycloplegia with the three instruments: Myopia Master, IOLMaster 700 and Huvitz HRK-8000A.  Abstract Purpose: To compare axial length (AL) and corneal radius (CR) measured with the OCULUS Myopia Master and the Zeiss IOLMaster 700, and cycloplegic refractive error measured with the Myopia Master and the Huvitz Auto Ref/Keratometer (HRK-8000A).   Methods: The study included both eyes of 74 participants (16 males), with a mean age of 22.8 (3.7) years. Eyes were measured, during cycloplegia, with the three instruments: Myopia Master (AL, CR and refractive error), IOLMaster 700 (AL and CR) and HRK-8000A (CR and refractive error). Bland-Altman plots with mixed effects 95% limits of agreement (LoA) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the agreement in ocular biometry between the Myopia Master and the IOLMaster 700, and in refractive error between the Myopia Master and the HRK-8000A.  Results: The analysis included 139 eyes, of which 52 were myopic (spherical equivalent refractive error, SER ≤ -0.50 D), 32 emmetropic and 55 hyperopic (SER ≥ 0.50 D). The 95% LoA for AL between the Myopia Master and IOLMaster 700 was -0.097–0.089 mm. There was no mean difference in AL [mean (SD) = -0.004 (0.047) mm, p = 0.34]. There was a significant difference in mean CR, with that measured with the Myopia Master being flatter than that measured with the IOLMaster 700 [0.035 (0.028) mm, p Conclusion: The limits agreement in measurements of SER, CR, and AL when comparing the Myopia Master with HRK-8000A and the IOLMaster 700 were wider than deemed acceptable for making direct comparisons. This indicates that the instruments cannot be used interchangeably in clinical practice or research. </p

    DATASET MIGRATED FROM FIGSHARE: This dataset contains guides and interview forms used to collect data for doctoral dissertation. These include, among others, guide for participant observation, participatory observation, individual interviews, focus group interview.   Abstract (doctoral dissertation) The background for this study is previous research suggesting that municipalities often fail to provide adequately differentiated health care services to home-dwelling persons with young-onset dementia, thus failing to meet their individual needs. This, however, stays in contrast with contemporary debate which is dominated by strong expectations of individual adaptions of health care services. The purpose of this study was therefore to empirically investigate the social practice that constitute the process of allocating and facilitating municipal health care services. By pointing out some possible connections between the actual practice and the broader social structures in which this practice is embedded, I have shed light on aspects of the established practice which may be perceived as unfair and unjust.  The findings from this thesis are based on fieldwork in two municipal service allocation offices, day care centers for persons with young-onset dementia, as well as the dementia nursing services, analysis of application forms and relevant websites. I have interviewed a person with young-onset dementia who has just applied for services and followed the process of allocating and facilitating the service until that person experiences the allocated service. The empirical material is analysed with the inspiration from Fairclough's critical discourse analysis with "intertextual chain" as a central analytical concept.  The study shows that in a context where the imperative to limit public expenditure is the dominating understanding of reality, legitimizing the work of demarcation becomes important. A main finding is that a cost/benefit discourse dominates the allocation and facilitation process. Within this discourse, the needs and wants of the recipients are modified in ways that keep services to a minimum level, albeit without compromising the idea of universal services. The study shows that this work of demarcation can lead to a shift towards welfare models other than the universalist model, and challenge equality work, without prior political discussions. Another important finding is that an unclear understanding of the category of persons with young-onset dementia may lead to a propensity to marginalise this group in a context where the cost/benefit discourse dominates. Furthermore, the study shows that a legal discourse is about to be established as a dominant understanding of reality. Within this understanding of reality, individual rights and requirements become important, as do concepts that refer to individuals, such as the concepts of autonomy and person-centredness. The study shows that too much focus on individuals and their capacity for independent decisions can veil the hegemonic notion of limiting public expenditure. The study therefore shows the capacity of the cost/benefit discourse, together with the legal discourse, to limit the ability of service allocation officers and health care personnel to influence health care services in a direction where the individuals are given real influence over their own health care services. </p

The data provided are body and testis weight for phodopus sungorus raised on different photoperiods, the genome assembly statistics for Phodopus sungorus, a comparative analysis of genes present in tanycytes LASER captured from animals gestated and raised on different photoperiods with genes and clusters defined in a pseduotime analysis of tanycytes in mice. Finally we provide counts of JASPAR motifs occuring across the Phodopus sungorus genome.Abstract from publication: In mammals, maternal photoperiodic programming (MPP) provides a means whereby juvenile development can be matched to forthcoming seasonal environmental conditions. This phenomenon is driven by in utero effects of maternal melatonin on the production of thyrotropin (TSH) in the fetal pars tuberalis (PT) and consequent TSH receptor-mediated effects on tanycytes lining the 3rd ventricle of the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH). Here we use LASER capture microdissection and transcriptomic profiling to show that TSH-dependent MPP controls the attributes of the ependymal region of the MBH in juvenile animals. In Siberian hamster pups gestated and raised on a long photoperiod (LP) and thereby committed to a fast trajectory for growth and reproductive maturation, the ependymal region is enriched for tanycytes bearing sensory cilia and receptors implicated in metabolic sensing. Contrastingly, in pups gestated and raised on short photoperiod (SP) and therefore following an overwintering developmental trajectory with delayed sexual maturation, the ependymal region has fewer sensory tanycytes. Post-weaning transfer of SP-gestated pups to an intermediate photoperiod (IP), which accelerates reproductive maturation, results in a pronounced shift towards a ciliated tanycytic profile and formation of tanycytic processes. We suggest that tanycytic plasticity constitutes a mechanism to tailor metabolic development for extended survival in variable overwintering environments

    Norwegian Red dairy cows (n = 48) in early/mid lactation were divided in three groups and fed a ration consisting of grass silage and concentrate, where the concentrates were barley based but with different additional protein sources. These were: completely barley-based with no additional protein source (BAR), additional protein from soybean meal (SMB) or additional protein from yeast (Cyberlindnera jadinii) (YEA). The SBM and YEA concentrates had a higher protein content than the barley concentrate. Four batches of cheese were made from pooled milk from each of the three groups of dairy cows and individual milk samples were collected five times during the experiment and were analysed
