DATASET MIGRATED FROM FIGSHARE: Publication Abstract:The application of cloud-based simulators has increasing momentum in maritime education and training as a virtual platform for supplementing professional training with task-specific simulation-based learning. Congruent with traditional simulator technology and training methods, this new condition allows for asynchronous and unlimited simulator access where participation in training sessions is at the discretion of the trainee. Furthermore, this provides a learning environment that can have adaptive features to the trainee characteristics with selectable complexity levels, automated feedback, and automated performance assessment. With the advent of this emerging training technology, the organization of how training is deployed, the new roles and expectations for trainees and instructors, and the application of new data-driven analytics are not yet well understood. This paper employs a quasi-experimental study to investigate trainee motivation, personality traits, and task performance using a novel training design. The study was administered remotely to a sample (N = 18) of first-year maritime students who first completed a knowledge acquisition phase before conducting a skill acquisition phase with repeated simulator training of a procedural task, and finally a performance assessment of the simulator scenario. Data was collected from (1) a multiple-choice knowledge test, (2) a short-scaled Big Five Inventory, (3) the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, and (4) programmed simulator metrics. Results indicate that Extraversion correlates with motivation and self-efficacy predicts training performance. No significant relationship between prior knowledge and the training performance was found. The results can provide knowledge for implementation and delivery of remote simulator training in maritime education and training, as well as other fields.</p

Dynamic three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) imaging of liquid transport in porous media has primarily been conducted at high brilliance synchrotrons thus allowing fast, sometimes sub-second, temporal resolution to be obtained. University laboratory CT instruments lack the photon flux available at synchrotrons, limiting the obtainable spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we discuss our experiences with instrumentation and software methods to conduct time-resolved micro-computed tomography (4D-CT) experiments of flow in porous media, based on a conventional CT instrument operated with a highly undersampled number of projections. An experimental stage outfitted with syringe pumps placed on a slip ring allowed two-phase flow experiments to be carried out with continuous unidirectional rotation and without obstruction of the liquid supply lines. An iterative reconstruction algorithm based on a priori information was used to provide high image quality and ~30 s time resolution despite the few and low-exposed projections compared to standard protocols. The experimental technique was demonstrated with imbibition and drainage in glass bead-pack and Bentheimer sandstone samples with sub-minute temporal resolution, allowing the liquid configurations just before and after fast dynamic phenomena such as cooperative pore-filling events and Haines jumps to be captured. Power law scaling exponents for burst volumes associated with imbibition and drainage were estimated and compared with the literature. That 4D-CT experiments can be carried out using conventional CT instruments to challenge contemporary permeability models is of high importance for many geo-, bio- and environmental physics challenges.</p

The dataset contains source data for figures 2 and 3 contained in the article "Contamination of 8.2 ka cold climate records by the Storegga tsunami in the Nordic Seas".
In a simulation of the Storegga tsunami generated from the Storegga Landslide we calculated the maximum flow velocity to be 2–5 m/s on the shelf offshore western Norway and in the shallower parts of the North Sea, and up to about 1 m/s down to a water depth of 1000 m. Data from this simulation for three locations is presented in the files: "Figure_2a-MD95-2011.txt",
"Figure_2b-LINK14.txt" and "Figure_2c-Troll_28-03.txt" (see below).
We re-investigated sediment core MD95-2011, from which a large and abrupt 8.2 ka cooling had been inferred, and found the cold-water foraminifera to be re-deposited and 11,000 years of age. Oxygen isotopes of the recycled foraminifera and the content of sand grains, thought to be dropped from ice bergs, might have led to an interpretation of a too large and dramatic climate cooling. Data from sediment core MD95-2011 is found in the files: "Figure_3a-Sand.txt", "Figure_3b-Planktonic_forams.txt", "Figure_3c-Benthic_forams.txt" and "Figure_3d-Oxygen_isotopes.txt".

This dataset contains tabular files recording occurrences and frequencies of modal verbs in the Brown family corpora; nine modal verbs (can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would) and six corpora are considered (Brown, LOB, Frown, FLOB, BE06, AmE06). Tokens were retrieved using the CQPweb interface provided by the University of Lancaster, and the tables include information on several text-level variables (text length, broad genre, text category, corpus, time period, variety). The data are provided in two formats: (i) in case form, where each token (77,872 in total) is listed separately, including information on the context of occurrence (10 words to the left and 10 to the right); and (ii) in frequency form, which aggregates occurrences by providing information on how often each modal verb appears in every text, thus including one row per text-modal combination (27,000 in total: 6 corpora x 500 texts x 9 modals)

mRNA sequencing supplementary dataset to: The Effects of TGF-β-induced Activation and Starvation of Vitamin A and Palmitic Acid on Human Stem Cell-Derived Hepatic Stellate Cells
The dataset contains high-throughput mRNA sequencing reads (FASTA files, extension .fq.gz) of human pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatic stellate cells (scHSCs). The sequencing was performed by the Novogene UK Cambridge Sequencing Center.
Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are hepatic pericytes. They exist in a quiescent state during homeostasis and transdifferentiate to an activated state during liver injury and disease. In the activated state, the HSCs are described as losing their vitamin A-storing lipid droplets.
Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-b) is a potent activator of HSCs. Starvation of vitamin A (retinol) and lipid (palmitic acid) media supplementation has also been proposed to affect the HSC activation status.
In this dataset, the mRNA of scHSCs derived from four different human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) lines were sequenced by Novogene (see https://www.novogene.com/eu-en/). scHSCs from all hPSC lines were divided into four groups, each performed in technical triplicates, and treated for 48 hours to assess activation-related changes to the transcriptomes. The project aimed at providing novel information on the relationship between scHSC activation and vitamin A and lipids.
The scHSCs treatments were:
- "Control", meaning no treatment.
- "Starvation", meaning starvation of retinol and palmitic acid media supplementation.
- "TGFb", meaning treatment with 25 ng/mL TGF-b.

This dataset contains data about annual shoots of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus): phenolic, carbon and nitrogen concentrations after simulated herbivory. This data was analysed and the results were published (see Related publication). Here follows the abstract of the publication:
Herbivory can be reduced by the production of defense compounds (secondary metabolites), but generally defenses are costly, and growth is prioritized over defense. While defense compounds may deter herbivory, nutrients may promote it. In a field study in boreal forest in Norway, we investigated how simulated herbivory affected concentrations of phenolics (generally a defense) and the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio in annual shoots of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), a deciduous clonal dwarf shrub whose vegetative and generative parts provide forage for many boreal forest animals. We measured concentrations of total tannins, individual phenolics, nitrogen and carbon following several types and intensities of herbivory. We identified 22 phenolics: 15 flavonoids, 1 hydroquinone and 6 phenolic acids. After high levels of herbivory, the total tannin concentration and the concentration of these 22 phenolics together (called total phenolic concentration) were significantly lower in bilberry annual shoots than in the control (natural herbivory at low to intermediate levels). Low-intensive herbivory, including severe defoliation, gave no significantly different total tannin or total phenolic concentration compared with the control. Many individual phenolics followed this pattern, while phenolic acids (deterring insect herbivory) showed little response to the treatments: their concentrations were maintained after both low-intensive and severe herbivory. Contrary to our predictions, we found no significant difference in C/N ratio between treatments. Neither the Carbon:Nutrient Balance hypothesis nor the Optimal Defense hypotheses, theories predicting plant resource allocation to secondary compounds, can be used to predict changes in phenolic concentrations (including total tannin concentration) in bilberry annual shoots after herbivory: in this situation, carbon is primarily used for other functions (e.g., maintenance, growth, reproduction) than defense
