Modernist Legacy:: The literature from Pará and its contributions to the construction of Belém do Pará's food identity

    Get PDF
This article seeks to understand the important role played by the modernist movement in Pará in the formation and construction of a regional food identity. To this end, we examined modernist works that address the theme, focusing on publications by members of the so-called Academia do Peixe Frito (Fried Fish Academy), a group of young literati that met, from the 1920s onwards, in different places in the city of Belém, but having as fixed point the Ver-o-Peso market. Composed of men, mostly from the outskirts of the capital, they discussed the direction of literature, social and political issues and, in their works, exalted everyday life and the flavors of Pará, which greatly gave visibility to local traditions and customs. Especially when it comes to food. To assess the importance of the group and its members for the history of food, we consulted literary and visual arts sources that highlight the region's eating habits and customs. In this sense, we propose the analysis of the work Kitchen from far north - Pará - Amazonas, written by Bruno de Menezes, one of the leaders of the Academia do Peixe Frito. Produced in the early years of the 1960s, to compose the Anthology of Brazilian Food, by Luís da Câmara Cascudo, the work reveals ingredients, typical dishes and eating habits of the region, and constitutes an invaluable source for the study of the history of food in the Amazon and the process of building its food identity

This article aims to present Lêda Boechat Rodrigues (1918-2014) as an important, and neglected, part of the definition of the image of José Honório Rodrigues (1913-1987). After 46 years of marriage, with the death of José Honório, it fell to his wife and permanent collaborator to work on the construction of his literary estate. Through Boechat's work with the historian's correspondence, the objective is to show that the intellectual produced a historiographical collection that was fundamental for the survival and maintenance of the name of José Honório Rodrigues. Our hypothesis is that Lêda, as organizer of his literary estate and as author of the history of historiography, made this author and his work a reference not only for those who knew him in life, but a historiographic monument to be read and recognized by other generations

Tricontinentalism for kids:: N´vula (1981) and the fictional making of the new man in Cuba and Angola

    Get PDF
The article presents an analysis of the Cuban animation N’vula (1981), written by director Juan Padrón. This author, best known for the movie Vampiros en La Habana (1985) or the animated series Elpidio Valdés, released N'vula, a 9-minute short, within the context of Operation Carlota, a military action organized by the Cuban government, aiming to support the recently installed government regime of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA). The execution of this operation can be understood on the dictates of tricontinentalism, here considered a doctrine of Cuban foreign policy, based mainly on third worldism and socialist internationalism. With Ernesto Che Guevara as one of its most iconic representatives, tricontinentalism can be closely related to the idea of the New Man, promoted by several Marxist-Leninist states, and also theorized by the Latin American revolutionary. This context proves to be fundamental for the discussion of the narrative meanings of N'vula, a film that, by targeting children, reveals itself to be an instrument for propagating tricontinentalism for children at a time when the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC) promoted a series of works portraying the Angolan reality and the actions of Cubans in that country. The protagonists of N’vula are “pioneer” children, educated within the Marxist parameters of the MPLA in liberated zones, who face cruel Portuguese soldiers sponsored by imperialism, whose objective was to destroy their school and village. In this sense, the film presents a projection of what the socialist New Man should be like, already created within an educational logic that was intended to be “revolutionary” and free from the assumptions of the bourgeoisie. For this reason, we can consider that the work embodies the precepts of tricontinentalism, serving as a kind of idealized projection of what the future of Marxist nations should be like.O artigo apresenta uma análise da animação cubana N’vula (1981), da autoria do diretor Juan Padrón.

    No full text
This paper discusses the narrative strategies in two short films about violence in Rio de Janeiro’s slums, made in Brazil in 1994. The first film is Túnel, directed by Bruno Kennedy and Mayra Jucá, which provides a nonsensical critique of how violence is exploited as an element of television consumption. The second is Geraldo Voador, by Bruno Vianna, which depicts the stolen childhood of a black boy living in a slum. In both films, the trivialization of violence, firearms and easy deaths ironizes the necropower that designates slums as “zones” where the free right to murder is consecrated. Furthermore, each film, in its own way, problematizes the media spectacularization of this violence, transforming it into a character, and strains the filmic language through a mix of horror and humor elements

History of esotericism: from the genealogy of a concept into the construction of an intellectual field

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to analyze the polysemic concept of “esotericism”, not in a sense to find an a priori definition for it, but rather to elucidate how this concept is used by many intellectuals, which can construct both diverse perspectives of analysis, as well as different projects and institutional formulations within the disciplinary field of the “history of esotericism”. In this sense, the approaches of Frances Yates, Antoine Faivre, Wounter Hanegraaff and contemporary critics of this constellation of authors will be examined, as well as their intellectual and institutional affiliations. Thus, based on the genealogy of esotericism, the aim of this work is to capture the wandering of a concept, that is, its dynamics of survival and reinvention in historical and sociological terms

The absolute theatrality in El gaucho insufrible, by Roberto Bolaño

    Get PDF
In this short story, El gaucho insufrible (2003), Roberto Bolaño rewrites the myth of the Argentine gaucho, drawing a unique parallel between Borges and Cervantes by situating his narrative in an Argentina in crisis. In this unique play between the real and the imaginary, the short story makes Borges appear, on the one hand, as an ethical and literary ideal that the main character believes is the only way to get Argentina back to its roots and, little by little, tries to fit that fragile scenario into the standards of a utopian fictional reality; on the other hand, this staging achieves a quixotic stance by inscribing the literary myth in a space and time to which it seems to have never belonged, making the literary ideal replace the real and become a kind of counter reality that highlights the contradictions of historical progress. Starting from a reading of what Bolívar Echeverría (2005) considers the absolute theatricality of the Baroque in modernity, this analysis of Bolaño’s short story develops an ethical and aesthetic reflection on this emancipated representation which, by radicalizing the act of representing, highlights another reality, an alternative way of understanding political, social and historical processes.

Women, social networks and digital discourses from the geopolitics of the Global South

This paper addresses the relationship of women with the processes of digitalization of life from the geopolitics of the South. In this sense, a theoretical review from feminist, cyberfeminist, cyberactive, decolonial and neo-materialist studies is presented to unravel how the relationships between women and technology have materialized. In a general way, we consider that such relationalities have left an activist digital legacy in the self-writing. This would reveal that writing continues to be not only one of the formal languages of the internet, but also, and primarily, an individual and collective ethical strategy by which power can be relationally interpellated.
