READING INTEREST AND ATTITUDE AS CORRELATES OF STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL YORUBA LANGUAGE READING COMPETENCE IN OYO STATE, NIGERIA
Performance of students in Yoruba Language in both internal and public examinations is a serious concern which has attracted the attention of stakeholders of language education. In spite of different Research studies to investigate the cause and proffer solution, the problem persisted. It was on this basis, that this study investigated the extent to which reading interest and students’ attitude account for students ’Yoruba language reading competency of Junior Secondary School Students in Oyo State. The study adopted non-experimental survey design. The sample consisted of one hundred and twenty Junior Secondary school students randomly selected within Ibadan Metropolis. Two instruments were used for data collection, namely; Reading Interest Scale in Yoruba Language (RISY) and Student Attitude Scale in Yoruba (SASY). The psychometric properties of the instrument used are: Reading Interest Scale in Yoruba Language (r = 0.8) and Students Attitude Scale in Yoruba (r = 0.8). Two research questions were generated and answered. The data collected were analyzed using correlation and multiple repressions. The significance level was set at 0.05. The result revealed that the relationship among the predictor variables and the criterion variable is low. Hence, Attitude to Yoruba Language (r = 0.061, p> 0.05) and Reading Interest (r = 0.043, p>0.05) has a negative and low correlation with students’ learning outcome in Yoruba Language. This indicates a week significant and opposite relationship between the predictor variables and criterion variable. Based on these findings, it was recommended that teachers should update themselves through seminars and workshops from time to time on how to make Yoruba reading interesting to students so as to be able to correlate it with students learning outcomes. Schools, teachers and Guidance counsellors should counsel students not only to associate reading in Yoruba Language to tests, assignments and examination but that it should be a tool for relaxation, enjoyment, pleasure, self-development and advancement

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF ACADEMIC PLANNING EFFECTIVENESS IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The problem of inadequate and insufficient infrastructural facilities is not new as several scholars have investigated it over the years. However, the role of the academic planning unit in Nigerian universities has not been investigated as the section is often down played when selecting items and areas to investigate. With the attention generated on the insufficiency of infrastructure, several interventionist policies that have been adopted by government who is almost sole investor in public universities. This study therefore investigated the effectiveness of such planning from the perspective of students who utilize such infrastructure. The study adopted the survey research design using the multi stage sampling procedure to select 3,340 student respondents from five faculties in Nigeria’s first- and second-generation universities. A simple instrument titled ‘Students Perception of Academic Planning Questionnaire’ r=0.87 was used to elicit responses from respondents. The instrument was divided into two sections with section A eliciting bio-data information and section B on academic planning effectiveness (infrastructure). 2 research questions guided the study and were answered using simple descriptive statistics as percentages and frequency counts. The study found that of all the items surveyed; adequacy of library, health centre, hostel facilities, classrooms, Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, laboratory facilities, only ICT and laboratories scored a medium score. All others scored low as shown in Table 1 and 2. The impact of recent investments is yet to be seen in the universities. It is recommended that the universities seek to be independent in fund generation to facilitate planning and timeliness
AN EXPLORATION OF THE PREDICTION OF RESOURCE AVAILABILITY, ALLOCATION AND UTILISATION ON ORGANISATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN THE NIGERIAN ADULT AND NON-FORMAL EDUCATION SECTOR
The eradication of illiteracy is a continuing challenge for Nigeria; a trend been attributed to the problems of availability, allocation and utilisation of limited resources. The issue of having adequate human, materials and financial resources to work with has always been a major constraint. This therefore raised the concern about the efficient usage of the available resources, to avoid wastages in resource utilisation in the adult and non-formal sector. Most previous studies on resource variables (availability, allocation and utilisation of the limited resources) concentrated efforts on the formal education system, where the non-formal sector were targeted, efforts are not made to link the resource variables to organisational performance in the sector. This study, therefore, explored the predictive level of resource availability, allocation and utilisation on organisational performance in the adult and non-formal sector. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design of the ex-post facto type. Lagos, Ondo and Osun states agencies for adult and non-formal education were purposively selected from the South-west. The proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting six directors, 47 supervisors and 1,344 literacy instructors/facilitators used. Four main instruments were used for data collection, namely Resource Availability (r=0.81), Resource Allocation (r=0.78), Resource Utilisation (r=0.75) scales and Organisational Performance Evaluation Questionnaire (r=0.69). Data were analysed using multiple regression and Pearson product moment correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The linear joint effect of resource availability, resource allocation and resource utilisation on organisational performance in adult and non-formal education sector was significant (F(6.191) 52.420; Adj. R2 = 0.181), they accounted for 43.0% in the prediction of organisational performance. Resource utilisation (? = .071), resource allocation (? = .055) and resource availability (? = .053) had positive relative significant predictions on the organisational performance of the state agencies for mass education used in the South-west, Nigeria. There is the need for the agencies to ensure efficiency within the system to avoid wastages, control cost and to achieve rational allocation of the limited resources available to them in the delivery of their mandates

THE NECESSITY OF CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AS A FOUNDATION FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE AND POLITICAL STABILITY
This paper examined the necessity of Christian Religious Education in Nigerian secondary schools. Christian education is a foundational knowledge for Christian children and the spiritual and moral teachings in Christian education prepare children for good governance, sound society and political stability. From the history of Israel, Christian Education was a process in which religious knowledge; skills and set of values were passed down from one generation to another in the informal setting. This was how learning of religious norms and values were done in the family and between groups even before the introduction of formal education in schools in Israel. This was done to produce the foundation and the success of Christian community among the people of Israel depending on the size, number of people and factors among the Judeo-Christian era. Good governance and political stability do not emerge from the blues. It has to start from a solid foundation through the God-given agents of transformation here on earth. It happened in the times of Old and New Testament, so it is happening in our contemporary communities today. Christian education in Nigerian secondary schools provides the common-good focus on moral responsibility, peaceful co-existence and national development. This study further recommends that Christian education is the interactive construction of moral knowledge in the students’ class room and social settings. The discourse finally positioned Christian Religious Education as God’s ordained tool for the foundation for good governance and political stability as it also provides quality assurance. The paper opined that substandard work force is detrimental to national transformation, growth and development. Hence, there is the need to reform the curriculum and the teaching of Christian education with a view tomeeting the needs of young people living in an era of corruption, stealing, kidnapping religious crisis and globalizatio

Studies on Length–weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Seven Commercially Important Freshwater Fish Species of Asejire Lake, Ibadan, Nigeria
Abstract
Length-weight relationships provide information useful in estimation of standing stock biomass and compare the ontogeny of fish population from different water bodies for sustainable fish production. Hence, the length–weightrelationships(LWR) and condition factor ofseven endemic fish speciesinAsejireLake were investigated. One thousand three hundred and eighty one (1,381) fish samples were collected from fisher's catch and identification and measurements oflength and weight were made in situ. The weight (W) - length (L) relationships were estimated using the b logarithmic form of the equation W = aL , while condition factor was determined following 3 Fulton'sequationK=100W/L .TheallometriccoefficientboftheLWRinallthespecieswasfound to be negatively allometric (b<3) except female and combined sexes of Labeo parvus where the 2 growth was positive allometric (b>3).The coefficient of determination (r ) obtained which ranged from 0.601 (Tilapia marie)to 0.979 (Labeo parvus)revealed a high degree of positive correlation. Conditionfactorvalueswerehigherthanone inallthe sevenspecies, andshowedanovertvariation with highest value in Sarotherodon galilaeus (4.037±0.41). However, all the fish species are in good condition for growth and survival in Asejire Lake. This study has therefore provided basic information on the growth pattern and general well-being of 7 fish species from Asejire Lake to updateexistingdataforsustainablefisherymanagement
Effect of Defatted and Dephytinized Soy Proteins Fortified with Phytase on the Growth, Nutrient Digestibility and Phosphorus Load of Rainbow Trout
Abstract
Feeds with minimal phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) stressors on the environment are paramount for eco-friendly aquaculture, as P and N are the major sources of aquatic pollution. This study investigated the effects of defatted soybean meal (DSM) plus phytase and dephytinized soy protein (DHP) plus phytase on the growth, N and Pretention, N and P excretion and total P loadings by rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Seven isoproteic -1 diets were formulated to contain, DSM (diet 1), DSM plus 5 g Pkg diet (diet 2), DSM plus 1500 U/kg phytase (diet 3), DSM plus 3000 U/kg phytase (diet 4), DHP (diet 5), DHP with 1500 U/kg phytase (diet 6) and DHP plus 3000 U/kg phytase (diet 7). Chromic oxide (1%) was added to the diets as inert marker for digestibility studies. The diets were tested on rainbow trout (25.6 ± 0.24 g) for 12 weeks. Results indicated no significant differences in the mean weight gain (MWG), specific growth rate (SGR) and food conversion ratio (FCR) of the fish subjected to the different dietary treatments. However, the MWG, SGR and FCR of the fish treated on diets of DSM were marginally higher than those maintained on DHP. Similarly, the fish treated on DSM retained higher N which resulted in lower excretion values of N. Fish in T 7 retained most Pand generally fish treated on DHPretained slightly higher Pthan those treated on DSM diets. Pexcretion was closely related in treatments with DSM (3.64-5.41kg/Ton) and that with DHP (3.65-4.85kg/Ton), with T(s) 3 (3.64) and 7 (3.56) having the least (P<0.05) values, while T2 with P supplement produced the highest (P<0.05) P excretion of 5.41kg/Ton, least P and Zn retention and N excretion values. Effluent Pdischarge was least (P<0.05) in T7 (5.33mg/kg). This study revealed that addition of DSM in the diets would promote better fish growth, while addition of DHP would promote better environmentally friendly aquaculture
